Portal 2 leads EA to $999 million quarter

Valve's puzzler ships 2 million to retailers as Crysis 2, FIFA 11 show staying power; digital revenue makes up more than 20 percent of publisher's income.

by

Portal 2 opened up to rave reviews, and it turns out the game's sales weren't too shabby, either. Electronic Arts today announced its financial results for the three months ended June 30, beating its first fiscal quarter guidance with a boost from Valve's first-person puzzler.

Portal 2's multiplayer mode stars bicker about the importance of shipped vs. sold.

EA said it had shipped 2 million copies of Portal 2 to retailers during the quarter to lead a new release slate that also featured Alice: Madness Returns, Darkspore, and Shadows of the Damned. Combined with Valve's Gabe Newell telling the Games for Change conference last month that Portal 2 had sold 3 million copies, that suggests the developer has sold at least 1 million copies through its own Steam service.

The publisher's bottom line also received an assist from its catalog titles, as Crysis 2 hit the 3-million-shipped milestone during the quarter, and FIFA 11 has reached 15 million copies sold (including mobile versions of the game and downloaded copies). In other milestones, Dragon Age II and Dead Space 2 both made it to 2 million copies sold to retailers, while Battlefield: Bad Company 2 reached 9 million shipped lifetime-to-date.

Digital revenue was also up strongly for the quarter, with EA reporting $209 million in sales for the quarter. The publisher's previous 12 months of digital sales have reaped $854 million in sales, up 35 percent from the year prior to that. The console digital market growth has been particularly pronounced, surging 91 percent year-over-year. Much of that growth can be accounted for by FIFA 11 and Bad Company 2. EA reported that through June, FIFA 11 has brought in $64 million in digital revenue, compared to FIFA 10's $33 million total. Likewise, Bad Company 2 has brought in $53 million digitally, while Battlefield 1943 peaked at $18 million, and the original Bad Company just reached $2 million.

For the first fiscal quarter, EA reported sales of $999 million, up from $815 million for the same period the year before. The publisher also reported net income of $221 million for the quarter, up from $96 million for last year's first fiscal quarter.

Looking forward, EA also updated investors on preorder campaigns for two of its biggest games: Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. The publisher said Battlefield 3 preorders are tracking 10 times higher than those of Bad Company 2 at the same point in development. As for The Old Republic, EA said the BioWare massively multiplayer online game broke the publisher's record for preorders.

EA also gave its full-year guidance, which calls for revenue between $3.82 billion and $4.03 billion, with the per-share figure ranging from a loss of $0.10 to a gain of $0.21.

Ive learned not to get games when they come out it makes me feel a lot better and the games themselves more enjoyable, waited a couple months for Deadspace 2, got it for 20$ new, ill do the same with MW3. I have never played Bad company 2, but played 1 and hated the grainy visuals. Grainy is a huge deal breaker 4 me, it does not belong in gaming, especially horror, I payed 3000$ for my HDTV and want clear crisp visuals. It does not give the game a cool look or add anything, it just looks retarded. I may try bad company 2, but probably not 1 left a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure why people who like EA have to hate activision, no 1 is more greedy than EA, with their sub par dlc, again I just wait and get the complete package for less.

Meh, they won't have Valve on their side anymore in the future

EA are definitely on the up and up. They're smartly purchasing casual studios, creating new franchises, and working well in the digital space. They're a smart investment now, and I expect their stock to get very strong with the releases of Battlefield 3 and The Old Republic.

So wait, Valve turned to EA to publish the retail version of Portal 2, but EA refuses to avail Battlefield 3 for sale on Steam? Geez, talk about looking a gift company in the mouth...

@ raptures330 yeah i know the problem its call publishers/shareholders. using your analogy then the best way for this is the devs to break free of the money grabbing publishers. just like whats happening in the music industry where the artists are puyblishing their own music online. so put it another way there is plenty of money for devs its just that the moey grabbing publishers are created the worst contracts for devs ever, thats reality

My comments aren't intended to be trollish; just that the math doesn't really add up. First it was piracy and then it was used games...if they really are suffering so 'bad', wouldn't profit be in the negatives? I'm not saying these things don't impact the overall picture, I'm just saying they need to stop screwing gamers with ridiculous DRM practices and 'dime n' nickel' DLCs.

then next week : complain that the used game industry is killing them dispite the fact of massive profits and the fact used game sales have been around as long forever without causing a problem until now all of a sudden. expect another sob story sheep will fall for and attack fellow friends and gamers for as if these publishers actually care about them. im still going to keep buying used games from a retro game store i like 'good people who actually need the money to get by and make a living. plus no one calling me a criminal like people in the industry have been suggesting' dont agree with me? tough sh*t. i don't care. your attacks are not going to stop me from buying out of print games used bottom line. they can take those online passes and shove it.

@RawhideSphinx You can't really believe some website over a report of the company that made the game. But sadly yes, Wii sports is the top selling game, and that sucks, but that doesn't change the fact that BF3 will take a good chunk of the COD share this year. MW3 would hardly be a failure if it sells 15 million instead of 20 million like Black Ops, but still that would be good news for gamers when money is spread. I would take EA over Activision any day even if both are actually greedy. At least EA does make some good original games from time to time like Dead Space and Mirror's Edge, not to mention that they publish Bioware games, so that's a GREAT reason to like them.

@chimpdaddy Let me try put it in a way that you will understand... When there are food shortages... who are the ones that go without food? The big bankers or the little guys? Money is nourishment to the video game devs. Missing out on a lobster meal for the big banker is annoying. Not getting their ration of rice for the smaller guys... go to bed hungry. No one is worried Coldplay won't be able to pay their rent. No one feels bad for Elton John having to sell 10 cars out of his 150 car collection. Got the problem?

It is still super fast and easy to find a good game on BadCo2 PC even with the Vietnam add-on. Never takes me more than 3 minutes.

I'd like to thank EA that while earning nicely from Valve's games, they removed some of their games from Steam. And I especially would like to thank them for not bringing BF3 to Steam, because they want more $$$ for themselves, and less for DICE. Thank you.

im not sure if anyone mentioned it but, ok so they make loads, so where does this fit into the whole piracy is bad 2nd hand games are bad anything you do of your own intelligence is bad so really publishers are making bucket load of profit and yet they have the audacity to complain about 2nd hand games and piracy, how much contradiction is there?

@thelegendlives5 -go to vgchartz.com, and type in Bad company 2 you will see les than 6 million in sales between PS3, xbox and PC, while Black ops, is over 25 million, it even sold over a million on the wii, not sure why. Its to bad too much better games sell so much less, but then again Wii sports is at the top of the list, I know it comes with the Wii, but that makes me feel worse.

as long as activision gets screwed when bf3 comes out none of this matters to me.

@kiopta1 Your second point is really 2, I think. Anyway I was being contrary and lightening the mood...I understand the importance and gravitas a high selling game can bring to developers and the publishers. Im also aware there are gamers out there loyal to developers etc etc. My point nevertheless still stands.

thelegendlives5
thelegendlives5

@RawhideSphinx I don't think so, Black Ops sold 20 million or so, and Bad Company 2 sold 9 million copies, so while Black Ops is more successful, you can't deny that the "spin-off" bad company 2 has actually sold very well in comparison, so I am guessing BF3 will take a good chunk out of MW3. I am 100% sure MW3 will sell more, but it will probably be like 15 million for MW3 and maybe 12 for BF3.

Just got to remember guys when your talking about "Game Sales Charts" is that almost anything you look at is just retailers which does NOT include Digital Distributional, Like Steam, Impulse, Direct2 Drive. Valve (Steam owner) doesn't release sales info directly to the public very often. Anyways what I'm getting at is that I think its so funny when people say PC only as about 12% of the game market; which is simply not true because those numbers don't include digital sales. As evidence in this article suggests PC gaming makes up about a quarter of the market. -Granted this is just one game (Portal 2) I'm talking about and may not represent the market as hole but it's still pretty interesting.

kiopta1

@Megleeker 2 things... First, they tell how much they make and how they are selling to inform investers. Second, if your a gamer and you like certain games or for companies to have ability to produce high quality games then you should care.

RawhideSphinx

@thelegendlives5 -Bad company has sold around 5 million, check game sales charts, while Black ops has sold 25million over the 4 consoles, it's not in the same league.

Movies and Games makers are so quick to tell us how much money they make. Does anyone really think this has an impact on me sitting at 1:30 in the morning in my boxers playing Portal 2.

I looked into this game, but per my own guidelines I wasn't able to test drive it by a free down-loadable. I did some more checking around, and despite the over whelming positive reports, it just seemed too repetitive and boring. Perhaps I'll take another look when the price drops in half.

Incredible figures considering Fifa 11 online team play is a total shambles. And the fact that on the 360 you WILL be persistently harassed by scum regarding any number of supposed hacks/glitches/duplications. I wont be putting my money in the pot for Fifa 12 ,EA, you can count on that. 'We are 11' - it aint.

@jamyskis Er lol? the article's assumption is that P2 sold 1M on steam and 2M physical copies by EA. Back in the day it wouldve been all sales by EA. Now Valve/steam sells 1/3 of all copies cutting out the middle(EA)man. Digital Distribution is the future.

If EA has benefited so much from Portal 2, that means that sales via Steam itself can't have been that great and that the bulk of the sales came via PS3, Xbox and PC physical media. Steam was the one sales channel in which EA did not participate. So much for the dominance of digital distribution.
