Portal 2 sells 3 million - Report

Valve president and cofounder Gabe Newell tells Games for Change Festival audience that the recently released platformer has already gone triple platinum.

Earlier this week, the Games for Change Festival kicked off with a keynote address from former Vice President Al Gore. Today, the New York-based event was the scene of a speech from another executive--Gabe Newell, president and cofounder of Valve Corporation.

Portal has apparently already sold 3 million units.

According to gaming blog Joystiq, Newell used his speech to announce a major sales milestone for the critical darling Portal 2. Since its launch on April 19, the game has "sold" 3 million units, Newell reportedly said. He did not specify whether that figure referred to sold-in (that is, shipped) copies or represented games sold through to consumers.

Newell didn't say whether the figure included sales on Steam, Valve's online distribution platform for the PC and Mac. He also declined to clarify whether that figure included cumulative sales on all the platforms Portal 2 was released on--the PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

As of press time, Valve reps had offered no official confirmation of Newell's comments.

Portal 2 has reached its sales milestone far faster than its predecessor, Portal. On the day its sequel launched, Valve confirmed to GameSpot that the original game had sold over 4 million units since its launch in October 2007. That figure did not include Steam sales of Portal, but it did include sales of the compilation The Orange Box, which included Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, and the latter shooter's first two expansions.

Great article. It's always nice when you can not only be informed, but also entertained!

annoyingdevil @ The DLC will come but we don't know when. All we know is that it will be this summer. Just remember that they say that only the FIRST DLC will be free! I can't wait for it.

at least Gabe Newell is actually HAPPY with 4 million sales. Not like Activision and EA who arent even happy if thier games only sell a million copies.

@frame_dragger Call of Duty runs on a modified ID Tech 3 engine, which was first used I think in 2003. They call it the IW engine, which was first used in COD 2. It's been updated since, but being based on such an ancient game engine, you can see how great the graphical improvements are.

@dynamo11 That engine is far older than 4 years lol

I doubt that includes PC Steam sales

It was good but it was too damned short for what we paid.

I liked Glados and the ending song better in the first one =P, but portal 2 co-op was extremely well done. veryyyy entertaining to play with a friend, portal one and two are games I would gladly play again!

I'm all for unique games, and i like puzzles. But Portal is one of those that just bore the heck out of me. I tried getting into it a few times but couldn't get passed the repetitive nature of it all. And this is not trolling! It was well done. Just not for me. But I guess now there are two robots to add to this...ahem...puzzle game.

One of the few games I've bought for more than $30 (I'm cheap lol), and it was worth it.

Portal 2 was extremely funny. Definitely the funniest game I've played this year. I was however very disapointed that they didn't take advantage of the PC's superior computing power. Great game though.

@xtremeflem2day I don't know if I agree with that. Out of the top 10 best selling video games of 2010, four were rated E. Of those four, all were first party Nintendo games, and two were Pokemon. Outside of Nintendo, rated E games don't fare as well as T or M games.

xtremeflem2day
xtremeflem2day

@SkamArtist Just so you know, in the gaming industry, apparently E rated games sell the most, and M rated games sell the least.

@XxCRAFTYxX Also complaining about 'Valve needs new engine'. You know CoD is using the same engine (with upgrades) for every $equel right? Yes, just like Valve. I can understand why most gamers complain about that, but creating engines takes a lot of time and resources, and those costs where already high two platform generations ago.

Damn, and I haven't even bought it yet! So Gabe, just imagine how much success you and Valve will have when the next Half-Life is finally released...*hint*

@John_Read Yeah, let's ditch everything Dice has done and just put mod support. That's exactly what we all want, right? Oh, FYI. EA doesn't make the game.

@P-Ball3179: Well, I see your point I agree, the thing I typed was an opinion, not a fact. I got a bit out of hand. And also thanks for being sincere. I apologize from anyone who was offended or annoyed by my comments. I guess it's my loss not enjoying a product you people did.

@gameking5000 BC2 also don't have mod tools If BF3 will not going to have mod support then EA is more loser than Acti

Kinda hard not to root for Valve. Their games have so much personality, and Steam is a treasure trove for the gaming bargain hunter. I hope they sell a few million more. (Did I mention the 39$ price point and free DLC?)

This is a series that clearly showed development and ingenuity, not stagnation, so I am happy it has sold 3 mil and I hope it will continue selling well. We should all encourage these types of games!

@Sign-Number-Two I don't want to banter back and forth with your per say, because at the end of the day, I will respect your thoughts and opinions. However, you clearly have a misconception of what a "rip-off" is. Valve made the first Portal, hence, Portal 2 is a sequel to their (being Valve) game. So, therefore, anyway you look at it, you can not call it a rip-off. If you you want to call it a replica without much change, I'll concede to that. It is sad, which I will agree, that we have come to the age when games are mostly release at a quick pace for profit, but then again, that is the business world today. Is it the best thing every made, no. Could it be way better, yes. So forth and so on. But people are going to hate on you because you claim fact and revealings of truth, but in truth, you are only typing opinion and nothing more. Good reference though to "Emperor without Clothes".

Sign-Number-Two
Sign-Number-Two

@P-Ball3179: sorry for answering a bit late. Well, I didn't use IMO because those things are fact, yes, there are games like Oblivion which I think are trash, but I can see why people like them, so I don't hate upon them in the public. But in the other hand, Portal 2 is originally a rip-off and that is a fact. It wasn't very different from Portal 1 which wasn't even a full game. It felt it was a rushed game and a quick money grab, the original Portal and it's mods and maps completely used the potential of this kind of game-play and there was not a need for a sequel. But just as I said, since the game was made by Valve, people felt it's their duty to praise the game as one of the best things ever made. But in the other hand , there are people like me who are not afraid of revealing the truth. The whole thing with Portal 2 and Valve game in general reminds of me that "Emperor without clothes " tale.

@XxCRAFTYxX By the way Call of Duty has nothing to do with EA! It's Activision. Do your homework.

Go Portal! The writing is awesome. @XxCRAFTYxX And COD shouldn't really brag. 25 million copies on 5 platforms? Wii Sports Resort: 26 Million. Wii Sports: 73 Million. Mario Kart Wii: 27 Million. New Super Mario Bros (DS): 25 Million. Never mind how many copies of Mine Sweeper and Solitaire! We are comparing apples and oranges, right? ;)
