The movie will feature the game's main protagonist Phoenix Wright, his rival Miles Edgeworth, and spirit medium Maya Fey. Phoenix Wright will be played by Hiroki Narimiya, who not only starred in Japanese movies like Lala Pipo and Drop but also lent his voice and likeness in the PlayStation 3 game Yakuza 4 to portray corrupt cop Masayoshi Tanimura. Miles will be played by Takumi Saito, who recently starred as Yamamoto in the live-action movie adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato. Phoenix Wright's assistant will be played by Mirei Kiritani, who has starred in Japanese movies like Kimi ni Todoke. Takashi Miike is set to direct the film, which is scheduled for an early spring 2012 release in Japan.

The Ace Attorney video games (Gyakuten Saiban in Japan) are a series of adventure games where players control a defense attorney named Phoenix Wright as he defends his clients via cross-examinations and investigates cases together with spirit medium Maya Fey. The most recent entry in the series was the Japanese version of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth 2 (Gyakuten Kenji 2).
