Phoenix Wright headed for big screen?

Director Takashi Miike reveals his next film is a comedic courtroom drama based on a Nintendo DS game.

by

Source: A tease from Japanese director Takashi Miike about his next project, as reported by the Huffington Post.

What We Heard: The Huffington Post article was primarily concerned with Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, the director's remake of the 1962 classic Harakiri. The article notes Miike's reputation for violence in his films, but the director suggests he's not incapable of working without gore.

"Objection! My dressing room is far too small."

As evidence, Miike mentions that his next project will have very little blood, adding, "It is a very light comedy that I am filming now, a court drama, based on a video game, the Nintendo game DS."

The number of comedic courtroom drama games released on the DS is slim, and the number of relevant ones worthy of big-screen adaptation essentially boils down to just Capcom's Ace Attorney series.

While a film adaptation of a family-friendly franchise like Phoenix Wright might seem a mismatch for the man behind twisted efforts like the horror film Audition or Ichi the Killer, Miike's body of work is diverse, as well as prolific. Beyond his shock-driven efforts, Miike also counts more family-friendly adventures like The Great Yokai War, Zebraman, and Ninja Kids among the 84 projects he's directed in the past 20 years.

Miike also has experience working with game adaptations. In 2006, Miike directed a prequel serial for Sega's original Yakuza.

The Official Word: A Capcom representative had not returned GameSpot's request for comment.

[UPDATE]: Shortly after this article went live, a Capcom representative responded to the inquiry, saying, "No announcements have been made."

Bogus or Not Bogus? Likely not bogus. And with Miike's track record, there's a good chance this will be one of those rare game-based movie projects that actually gets released.

Cross-media-contamination is complicated. It's only ever worked out regularly when it's books turned into something. Books turned into movies are usually good and books turned into games are usually good as well. But when its a book turned into a movie which is then turned into a game, it's ruined. For example; The Hobbit was a great book which was turned into a great game, and there was no Movie half step inbetween. But it's common knowledge that movie games suck. The Chronicles of Narnia were great books which were turned into pretty successful movies, but the games are pretty mediocre. And games turned into movies always fail. There have been a million that barely anyone has heard of. There was a Halo movie, an Animal Crossing movie, about 50 unsuccessful Final Fantasy movies, a Super Mario Bros. movie, some Street Fighter movies, a couple Mortal Kombat movies, Shenmue, Xenosaga, Metal Gear, Mega Man, and an Assassins Creed movie, plus a hundred more franchises. Every single one sucked. No suprise.

Done right, this is the kind of thing that could really create a franchise (Within a franchise. Winception!). The cases themselves are so amusing that it would be a crime to exclude them, but also to cram them in and do them no justice, so with Capcom's blessing (And this can do wonders for one of their greatest yet most underrated franchises), Ace Attorney could probably expand into Television (Live action or Animated).

@Raxyman OBJECTION! Have you seen the Professor Layton movie eternal diva? Professor layton is more "game" than practically light novel Phoenix Wright and his movie was awesome! how much more a light novel game?

If they want to do something with Phonix Wright they should put him on the wii. BUT they add him on a game disc and add vocie acting. That would be so cool hearing Phonix and maya and edgeworths vocie. I dont care if i have to pay 50 per a game. Just to hear some of the best charctors speak with full vocie acting is any fanboy's dream :).

"but the director suggests he's not incapable of working without gore" wtf does that mean?

@syafiqjabar So Phoenix Wright is like Superman? That would at least explain his 'windswept' hairstyle. Sorry, but if I want a 'Legal Thriller' or 'Courtroom Drama' then I'll pick up a John Grisham novel. (Above statement was meant to compliment John Grisham)

Wait, this will be a Japanese movie? So, not in English? If so, I want to get this subbed :D

Later, there were also pictures of the cast shooting at/near a primary/grade school in Kyoto, apparently the set for the courtroom scenes are held there. And all of that info surfaced in the past week or so - Miike's quote only confirmed it. In any case, the Gyakuten/Ace Attorney 10th anniversary twitter account in Japan comes live tomorrow the 26th. We should hear a confirmation pretty soon.

The movie has pretty much been all but confirmed, with Takeshi Miike's quote being the final nail in the coffin - on May 11 the Japanese side of the internet was abuzz with rumours of the movie, after pictures depicting a lakeside cottage and sundry shop surfaced online. In one picture of the sundry shop, there was a sign with the word "Tosanoman" cleared printed on it in Japanese - Tosanoman being the Japanese name for the Silver Samurai. Then a couple of days later, Hiroki Narimiya (Masayoshi Tanimura in Yakuza 4) was spotted on said set in Kyoto, said to have been cast as Phoenix Wright (there's even a profile picture of him on his official website where he wears a blue jacket and sports a hairdo similar to Wright). Other actors/actresses were also spotted - and observant netizens were quick to find blog postings of the guy playing Larry Butz that proved that he was filming in Kyoto. A recent photo of him also showed that he dyed his hair golden. Mirei Kiritani posted a picture of herself half in movie get-up - her hair was pulled back, and she was wearing some kind of purple ceremonial robe; she's rumoured to be playing Maya Fey.

@Suikogaiden @Distinctive_Fin Have you even played a Phoenix Wright game? It's a courtroom drama like Superman is a movie about a rescue worker (I'm sure Superman has rescued people in disasters a few times).

OBJECTION! Your honor, every other movie based in game has failed so far, do we really need another one to fail?

@Suikogaiden Yeah, but none were ever like Phoenix Wright.

I'm completely against any and all live action video game movie adaptations, and most CG or anime adaptations. So I'm pretty sure it won't be very good. At least Phoenix Wright is good as an anime adaptation,

Wake me up when Nintendo allows a Metroid movie or they substantiate that April fool's gag a couple of years ago: A Legend of Zelda movie. . . Just please keep it away from the director/writers of the Mario Bros. movie.

Like we need another courtroom drama. . . Although if Deadpool makes an appearance then I'll gladly see it!

If this one fails they can't blame it on the medium being too "unfriendly" to movies. It's just a goofy court game. How can you mess up a movie version of that?

The creator's busy on Layton Vs Ace attorney,I dont think he'll approve IF this comes up. "A Family-Friendly Franchise like Ace attorney" Have you been Hiding under a rock Gamespot? any average Casual/or Family based Gamer will throw this game away because its Massively Text heavy and needs a dedicated and Patient person to truly appreciate this amazing Series.

As long doesn't result the way the Yakuza movie "Like a Dragon" did. I love Miike, but the game to film adaptation he did for Yakuza was just...meh. Definitely had it's moments for sure. Well lets just hope that doesn't happen because usually Miike's films are excellent.

Neo_Sarevok
Neo_Sarevok

So this would be a real-life adaptation? I'd prefer an anime movie or series. It would do the characters a lot more justice. No matter which real-life counterparts play the characters, they're all going to look Japanese, just as many Japanese movies are (see Death Note). To do the series right, it needs to take place in America, but the Japanese will refuse that. They're very proud of their actors and will refuse foreigners. If lucky, we might see one foreigner (maybe playing Godot). All the hair will be black and perhaps dyed brown. Just do an anime. It will solve all the problems.
