Original Alan Wake sales cross 2 million

Remedy's horror action game vaults to double-platinum status from combined sales of Xbox 360 and PC versions.

Alan Wake has proven popular with gamers. Developer Remedy Entertainment has told CVG that combined sales of Xbox 360 and PC copies of the original have passed 2 million.

Alan Wake has been a bright spot for Remedy.

The studio's head of franchise development, Oskari Hakkinen, told the site that sales of this level make the game a "cult classic." Alan Wake launched for the Xbox 360 at retail in May 2010. A PC version was released last month, recouping its development and marketing costs in only two days.

Asked about the potential future of Alan Wake, Hakkinen said, "Alan Wake is definitely very close to our hearts. It's our IP--we own it. It's not something that we're going to forget very easily."

This statement falls in line with comments made by Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne last month, who said plans for a new entry in the Alan Wake series are already "in motion."

A follow-up to Alan Wake--Alan Wake's American Nightmare--launched last month on Xbox Live Arcade. For more on the original Alan Wake, check out GameSpot's review of the Xbox 360 version.

Alan Wake was one of the best games I've played on 360. I'm waiting patiently for a sequel.

It's a great that a cult classic in this case doesn't imply that the game, although having a strong fanbase, isn't profitable enough to motivate sequels. A cult classic is rarely what the companies want, unless it sells as good as this one.

"Alan Wakes sales suffered due to being the 2nd most pirated Xbox game of 2010 (its release year). There were 1.1million pirated downloads - and who knows how many more copies distributed via illegally burnt DVD copies. Also it definitely wasn't half price within a month but don't let facts get in the way of your hating." Yes it was, because the price drop was the only reason I bought it at the time. You haven't presented any facts either btw. Piracy has never affected any other 360 game's release, so why would Alan Wake be the only one that suffered for that reason/excuse?

@Black_Hand_313 it didnt sell well? 800k sold during the first 6months is pretty much a green light for MS especially for a new IP

i think they should involve real people to kill if they make another wake......i prefer blood instead of dissapearing or whatever the enemies do in it.

Great game! I wish it would come out for PS3 since I don't have a 360 anymore

Glad to see a rated T game do well. Between this and the Uncharted series, there still might be hope for a few games that are supposedly not for the adult to come out that has some action. I know I let my 14 year old son play some Mature games like the halo series since they don't feel the need to put strong language in it like so many games are going to. So many of the great games and great selling games understand they can get a lot more sales leaving it out like Half life series, left 4 dead, oblivion, skyrim, modern warfare series. There are a few of us out there that pay for games that don't want the f word blasting across the family room and throughout the house.

This was such a great game! I remember not caring about it too much because it was an xbox exclusive, and this was during the period of my xbox red ring rash - so I was in hate MS mode. Finally got this game when it was released on demand for xbox live - and it blew me away! Well, okay, at least the first 75% of the game blew me away - and then as every video game that ever exists crumbles under the weight of it's own insane ridiculous "we're not writers, we're programmers and designers" narrative. Regardless, this was a work of game art. I'm a bit biased toward the atmosphere of the game, living in Oregon. I've never really played a game that has captured the atmosphere of the Northwest beauty and moodiness as much as Alan Wake did. When they released the PC version, I bought it again. :) Please make Alan Wake 2! I'm sorry - and this is coming from an avid Alan Wake fan - but American Nightmare lost my interest after about 15mins. Please bring back the pulpy, schizophrenic, mystery - and Alan was way more interesting as a narcissistic pr*ck.

@maximumbarmage - Alan Wakes sales suffered due to being the 2nd most pirated Xbox game of 2010 (its release year). There were 1.1million pirated downloads - and who knows how many more copies distributed via illegally burnt DVD copies. Also it definitely wasn't half price within a month but don't let facts get in the way of your hating.

@shalashaska88 - At least 1.4 million of those sales are Xbox 360. So no - wishful thinking. Btw apparently Alan Wake was the 2nd most pirated Xbox 360 game of 2010 with more than 1.1 million downloads. This is why pirates are destroying the industry and the chances of great games getting follow ups. If those idiots had bought their copies Remedy would already have a full game sequel in the works.

I bet more than half of that is from the PC version

That's good news. I remember reading shortly after this came out on X360 that it wasn't selling well and a sequel was unlikely. Alan Wake's lucky to have a loyal fanbase.

Not very impressive given how long it's been out. I remember what a bomb this game was when it came out. It was literally half price everywhere within a month. That doesn't happen to successful games.

Alan wake was a fun and unique experience. I really liked the episodes being broken apart with the "previously on alan wake" plot catch up. I really don't care this game didnt get 9+ at GS, didn't hinder my enjoyment at all. People on here need to start playing games and not scores. - Congrats on the success, fingers crossed for the next entry

Remedy, focus your next entry on the PC first, then consoles. Like what you did with the first two Max Payne games. They are on my top games list and will always be. :)

I'd take Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead and The Witcher series all day over Sony's exclusives.

@coop36: It's true, but if somebody wants to pirate a game for whatever reason they will do so, no matter how complex the DRM, but it's always the legal customers that get screwed. As to why The Witcher 2 was more pirated than sold I don't know, perhaps it was the unfortunate sandsack to take gamers frustration at that time, but even adding tons of DRM wouldn't have stopped that. They won't sell less by adding more and more DRM due to piracy but due to adding more DRM because it p*sses off their customers while pirated copies work without these restrictions (that are mostly already bypassed before release), therefore DRM fails anyways. Whatever is going on in pirates minds, you can change it as little as changing a rapist or telling a drug addict to stop.

I'm glad to hear the game is doing well on the PC. I didn't get it for the 360 and heard mixed things about it, but decided to get it on the PC and I was surprised by the game. The gameplay was great, never got bored once during my first play through. And the story was just amazing. I'd definitely buy Alan Wake 2.

@ShadowofSonic mario is nintendo's strongest franchise since the 80's they only improve the formula, Alan Wake is a new IP that many though it wouldn't leave a mark since lately new IP like rage or mirror edge does not meet the expectations

I would surely like to see the face of that jerk from ubisoft now who while stating he lame reasons for the cancellation of the pc version of GR future solder said that 99% of pc gamers community compose of pirates. Its only because of their crappy games and DRm that peaople are forced to opt for piracy

coop36
coop36

@bloody-hell: I agree with trashing all the DRM bs but at the same time look at how millions of people treated CD Projekt. Werent more copies of the Witcher 2 pirated than actually sold? Yet people still say how great of a game it is and how much they love the company. While spitting in their face at the same time. Piracy is still a very real very relevant problem with PC gaming. Whether we like to admit it or not. Theres always going to be cheap idiots ruining it for those who do the right thing. And it will only get worse. Never underestimate the damage a large group of morons (pirates) can do. And the numbers will only grow and grow.

ady_1102

ok, now they have a good reason for making alan wake 2 for pc along with the other versions :D

So much about "piracy is bad" and "PC gaming is dead" - Talk about doubling your sales by releasing a properly ported game on PC. (and actually listening to feedback and implementing these changes) They sold a little over 1 million copies on console over about 2 years and within just 1 month almost doubled the sales thanks to the PC. Now, game publishers, get rid of your copy protection and DRMs as you see it's a waste of time and resources and doesn't work and games that don't suck or p*ss off players with unnecessary DRM actually sell.

still glad to hear they've sold that many - maybe they can think about doing another full game, complete Alan's story...maybe...

Is this really big news? Hasn't Mario 3D Land, a exclusive for the 3DS that has not even been out for a 6 months, sold 4 million?

According to Wikipedia,in December 2011 Alan Wake 360 sales were 1.4 million. So that would mean PC version managed to sell something like 500,000 copies in a few weeks?!

If they start working on a sequel now Alan wake 2 could be a Xbox Durango/720 launch title in 2013. The first game took a while to complete, end up doing well.
