Next-gen Source engine indicated in Filmmaker files

Application's code has several references to what could be in-development projects, including Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

A new version of the Source engine could be in development at Valve, if indications from bits of code discovered by fansite ValveTime.net are true. Script files within Source Filmmaker make several references to engines, including "Source 2," and files in the program previously discovered by the site also appear to refer to Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Follow Freeman.

Line 1387 of Source Filmmaker's vproj.py file states ''Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn't doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid -- assume next-gen 'Source 2'.'' Five other references to "Source 2" appear in that file alone, and Valve's website itself vaguely teases the engine is "about to get better." In a different file, references to a "ep3/models/characters/alyx" path suggest the existence of the long-speculated Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and series character Alyx Vance.

The last entry in the franchise was 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode 2. Valve co-founder Gabe Newell implied in April that work on the company's flagship franchise continues. He said it is careful to keep a tight lid on information to avoid missing expectations, however, after the notoriously troublesome development of Half-Life 2. GameSpot has reached out to Valve for comment on the code's implications, but had not received a response as of publication time.

Is it weird that I'm more excited by the fact that we might be getting a new engine than possibility of episode 3 or hl3?

No big surprise, that's what they need to bring HL3 when next gen will come, old Source is... getting old.

Don't expect to see much of this new engine before 2014, they're gonna take their time

I wouldn't be surprised until they wait until Source 3 for the next Half Life.

Gaben is our lord and master. I do hope that he, raptor jesus, and the flying spaghetti monster give unto us mere mortals Half-Life 3 from a shining and bright morning sky.

If this is true, I would hope this means that Half-Life 3 starts coming down the pike. Half-Life 2 did a great job of showing off what the original Source engine was capable of, and I think all of us here would love for Half-Life 3 to be the new engine's coming out party.

Hmmm, an interesting development.  You can sort of start piecing things together -- Valve wouldn't want to release a new Half-Life until the engine is ready, and with Gabe's comments on Linux, it may be that the new Source engine is being coded on top of OpenGL to allow for easy cross platform porting.  Though, of course, this is all pure conjecture.

EP3 isn't happening. The next Half-Life game is, in fact, Half-Life 3.

i think the sad truth is that gabe will be the first to provide us with any even vaguely reliable information. the kind of stuff in the article is just desperately grabbing at straws.

I wouldn't put much stock in a developer's comment in a script file. There's a certain past EA title that refers to NFS ProStreet 2 in comments, and it's pretty clear that that game never made it.

@sortajan Actually, this news is pretty definitive. There's no other reason Valve would make such file names.

@okassar Assuming they've been working on HL even half-heartedly it's no surprise files like this exist, and equally unsurprising that a couple might be leaked here and there. It could be scrap for all we know.
