Half-Life 3 wait explained

Valve cofounder Gabe Newell suggests studio has gone through numerous "twists and turns" to bring unannounced game to market; remaining silent on project is optimal for gamers.

Valve has yet to confirm it is working on Half-Life 3, but company boss Gabe Newell appears to have provided an update on the project. Speaking to Seven Day Cooldown in a podcast interview, Newell said unexpected development issues have kept the studio from opening up on the game.

Valve is intentionally keeping gamers in the dark about Half-Life 3...err...Ricochet 2.

After asking for a status update for a game all Valve fans have been clamoring for, the interviewer queried Newell, "When can we expect the release of Ricochet 2?"

Newell laughed at this, and spoke of Ricochet 2, a title not likely in development, and more believably a code name for Half-Life 3.

"In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance," Newell said, "we end up changing our minds as we're going through and developing stuff, so as we're thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you're saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we'd like to be super transparent about the future of Ricochet 2."

Newell added that Valve's silence on Half-Life is actually in the best interest of gamers.

"The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we're going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what's happening next," he said.

Laughing at the continued referencing of Ricochet 2, Newell said, "Nope. Everybody who's been working on Ricochet 2 continues to work on Ricochet 2."

Valve developed the original Ricochet, which was released in 2000. It is a futuristic action game presently available for $5 on Steam.

The most recent Half-Life game was 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode Two. That game advances the story of previous entries Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. A third episode was planned, but has not seen the light of day.

not like it will be as ground breaking or revolutionary as Half-Life 2 seemed at the time. but it was an awesome game and i'd love to continue the story.

Will it be worth the wait? I doubt it....

Ricochet 2 isn't a code name, it's actually Ricochet 2, and it's going to be the game of the year, it'll have a story so big that one game won't be enough so a year later they'll release Ricochet 2 Episode 1 and then another year after that they'll release Episode 2, seven years after that they'll release Half Life 3 but by that time nobody will care because all we want is Ricochet 3, DEAR GOD VALVE! WHY WON'T YOU JUST GIVE US RICOCHET 3?!! IT'S BEEN SEVEN GOD DAMN YEARS!!! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!!!

Nice video, Episode 1 & 2 felt meshed together, but I guess that's how it feels when you beat them.  Hipster?  This game started in the 90's...   We are Geeks...   Either way, nice video....  I kinda want to Play the Original Half Life this weekend now...  You Know... Since we have NO EPISODE 3 or part 3 to play....   nice Vid.  :)

Maybe tedious but "Gabe in HL3 Teaser" sounds better than the "Gabe in Hatred mass murder acceptance U-turn" headline tomorrow though....

I think Valve has long been hailed as a kind of deity, unparalleled by other fellows in the video gaming industry for their uniqueness, which for me however isn't quite the case. I would say if the ground-breaking nature is what should be talked of here, it's Portal that they did to have attained a fresh landmark, but the creativity there wasn't Valve's own all the same.

Same thing could be said about HL2 and L4D. I honestly don't think they're that creative or top-notch, but for sure the quality is there. Hence imo there's no guarantee that everything in HL3 will be ascertained to be sumptuous or shockingly pioneering, while perhaps Valve, in a very unfortunate way, take these things as fans' expectations so that they feel compelled to achieve these trappings. Now the only fans' request that they don't abide by seems to be the time of release.

half life 2 was leaked before launch, mass depression and rage abound the valve offices, most of the team wanted to fk the idea off then and never finish it and focus making money off steam, but they stuck at it, released it.. after all that heartache and misery I wouldn't tell you lot about a game I was making either, be patient it will arrive.

I wanted Episode 3 before Half-Life 3.

And Gabe... stop being a greedy sod and actually invest in the Steam infrastructure. Oh hello, 503! You again!

Oh please! By now, you should've at least made episode 3 -- in SEVEN years.

I don't care. If they take forever and it's terrible like Duke Nukem I won't buy it and it will lose money. If they pull off a masterpiece good, then I'll buy it. Hard part is as everyday goes by the hype slowly goes up making it that much harder to please their fans.

There are just so many big franchises that I'm not going to care if one of them jumps the shark. Valve thinks they are geniuses and they can only create perfection and that will haunt them if they take too long.

One word to explain the wait. Hype. ITS ALL ABOUT HYPE! Think, your all like "Half Life 3 confirmed." You tell this to people, they get HL2, they join the crowd. This continues until millions are guaranteed from the game. They are waiting for the hype to go up until its so high that large sales are inevitable. I know I started playing Half Life when my friend told me HL3 wasn't coming out. I confirmed it on my Steam page (my steam name is "Gordon Freeman [HL3 Confirmed]"  (PS: No "" in my steam name, everything in them is my steam)

At least he dropped the whole, "the fans haven't done enough," thing for HL3. Of course, its kind of hard to say that we haven't done enough after someone created an add campaign to recruit numerous Dave Newell look-alike stalkers just to follow him where ever he goes. Yeah, stuff like that... while creepy, does also send a desperate message for a Half Life 3 game.

I'm so done waiting for this game.

Then again I never played the HL2 episodes, just the main game so I guess I'm at a loss for this yearning everyone feels.

Maybe It's how I feel about Shenmue...

I'm been waiting 7 years for this game. Even if they release Episode 3, and it was the end of the series, I'd be happy. Episode 2 ended in such a cliffhanger and the story sits wide open ready to be concluded or continued or something. I'd be perfectly happy to play HL3 running on the Source engine w/ 2007 graphics. Just give me more of that great story, and amazing gameplay.

ninboxstation

besides finetuning their own main theme for HL3..., they probalby keep making/experimentig with new things and ideas ....,then another games comes out, with the better ideas/implementations than they maybe had for an idea/feeling..  (maybe like ZombiU's suspense, Disonored's Stealth, The Last of Us Clickers,  TWD's story ect. ect...), so they cancel, redo or evolve the ideas they had, to be at least the same, better and/or more original than the ones that have come out in other games... ..

but HL3 has to pull an endline, just just bring out what they have, or it will never end..... they can allways bring out "new/bigger" epsiodes with fresh stuff/ ideas if needed...., otherwise like squareenix1991 mentioned, many "normal" fans wont be interested anymore..., and the expectation from the "die hard" fans will be over the top, and if it doesn't live up the "looong" wait, it will get bashed.. ("what? it took them this long for this game!?" ...)

=> they should at least give a "hint" which year to expcet the game, for the fans... otherwise it will also seem like "we care more about the publicity, the timing of the teasers and first trailers for overall impact and then sales.., more than we care for our die hard fans, who have been waiting and waiting"...

=> just one thing I wish for this game: it not to be "casual" easy on the normal setting..  (... if  it's hard-ish, the gameplay and shoot outs are often better, besides having better suspense.......),

BUT if they have to make it "casual" easy on the normal setting, I wish that the "veteran" or "master" setting to have very good balancing (and not be frustratingly hard..., simllar to Bethesdas or Halo games on higher settings, they're perfect on the higher settings.....),

danmulv

If you look at the overall development cycle of the game I'd say they're right about on track. And if they're not nailing it, better to wait or quit rather than go the way of Splinter Cell or Rainbow Six.

I do not believe they are working on the HL3 game.I have a feeling they wrote themselves into a corner and dont know where to take the story.Instead they have focused on making other games(along with loads of money) cuz they are afraid they might justscrew up the HL game and ruin a good thing(making lots of money).Perhaps they could give the game to the guys who remade HL1,Black Mesa, and let them continue the saga.(since valve hasnt done any thing with it for the last 6 yrs.).Im not getting any younger and I would like to finish the HF Gordon Freeman story before I die.

floridadragon67

I like the fact they aren't giving release dates and teaser trailers. Look what happen to DNF. FAIL!!!

When HL2 took so long, people got upset because they saw pics and vids and then it got delayed another year and everyone threw a fit. I am fine with the way it goes right now and when the game comes out people are gonna get it, no matter what they say, just like they keep doing with COD series.

I love the other games they released since then (Portal 2, L4d1 and 2, and so on), so they haven't been laying down just churning out the same thing year after year. And they update their games with new content for free, not for extra money, for free!!! The still have updates coming for CSS and TF2 and those games are 6 to 9 years old. No other developer does that cause they are too busy making the next game for the next year.

Love the series, though I do believe with most here that the time has come for the release.

valve cant count to 3, there is so many valve games (excluding DLC) that only go to 2.

ive given up on half life 3... and if valve beleive the wait will mean larger sales when it does get released they are in for a shock  ..... 7 years since hl2 is ages in pc game terms so what are they doing

most game developers are working on the next installment while the previous game is released ... for example crysis 3 was in development for 12 months when crysis 2 was released.. so why is half life 3 taking so long ?

even if the source engine has been revamped this is no excuse.. the cryengine has seen 3 versions since its release with the first being released around the same time as hl2....

dont get me wrong i love valve and steam.. however come on guys ... lets have some news... release a demo on steam ... do something ...   the wait is killing me !

This is a bad move by Gaben. In real life kids grow up and will not care about a game series they played when they were a teen. Immagine a teen that is say 17 playing Half Life 2 and he also plays the episode games. But he will already be 25 to this day and he would have a wife most likely and wouldn't really care about Gabens series. Of course there are hardcore gamers that will game into their old age. But they are a minority.Point is that most of half lifes fans are getting older and I can bet a lot of them just forgot about Half Life. Maybe Gaben will try to make Half Life for the new gen and not carry on the old story or something.I wouldn't be surprised if valve made HL3 a console port and the PC gamers were screwed. But in all honesty I used to hold the half life series at basically my number 1. But it has been too long and I have found better games and couldn't really care anymore if valve released HL3 in 2+ years from now. And to all those people thinking that this will be like DNF you are right. There is no way that valve could develop a game this long and not have to redo the graphics all over again a couple of times. Since in 2 years we will have new consoles and there will be games that beat Crysis modded by then.

wtf is wrong with valve,hl3 will sold like hell even now they don't give a damn about loyal fans who are seriously going fucking berserk over hl3?give us hl3 before it's too late......

By the time HL3 (or whatever it will be called) is released, Alyx and Gordon will be middle-aged, and the main character will be their son, Gordon Vance-Freeman, Jr.

If Half life 3 is released ,valve will become the greatest game developers of all time....and the half life series will become the greatest series of all time..........For those who are telling that half life 2 is not the greatest game ever ,those people should be ashamed to call themselves atleast amateur gamers.........

Before Half-Life 2, there weren't really many stand-out singleplayer games out there. After GTAIII came out, games after that changed their shift to a more open-world gameplay. HL2 and EP1 were strictly linear but EP2 shifted to a more open-world gameplay. After the release of CoD4, it seems that a lot of games also shifted in their direction. Features of CoD4 includes customizable weapons, linear gameplay, strategic enemy spawning (HL2 has usually a fixed amount of enemies, excluding antlions; CoD has an indefinite amount of enemies and will keep spawning until you reach a certain part of the level, keeping you on your toes while you progress the level), scripted interactive cutscenes, flashy loading screens, die-hard character, and a game changing multiplayer. The HL series by design, is linear and very scripted and they have adopted some things from CoD to their other games (Remember the boss battle final scene? Scripted interactive cutscenes on your die hard character who was directly hit by the booby trap and she managed to stand up unscratched even after experiencing things no normal human would survive. No matter how fans deny it, this scene was inspired by CoD.

It's like Valve is experiencing a development hell after CoD4 was released. They wanted to make HL3 stand out from all the other FPS games out there. But the competition is getting a lot better and Valve is doing a lot of catch up just to be at par with those games. If Valve releases HL:EP3 with their pre-CoD4 script, a lot of people would be complaining as much as what happened to Mass Effect 3.

EA Bioware is the exact opposite of Valve. They always rush their games. A lot of scenes from the game is memorable, but due to the pressure of EA to release the game 'as planned', their last game's ending was rushed and had to be amended with an Extended Cut. Same might happen to Valve if they released their game with the early script and will lose more of their fans as they don't have a fanbase that's larger than the big-name game companies such as EA, Ubisoft, and Activision.

@SpyLiam lol so true, then they just start doing 2.1, 2.2, 2.4 (no 2.3...jk)  but i do have to say ive been playing the half life series since i was about 12, and kept up with it throughout the years. Half Life 3 is not something im holding my breath for, but it does sneak into a dream or two every now and then

floridadragon67

@brianthesnail12 They have been making several other games since the release. Don't get me wrong, I want this game and am tired of waiting, but they have released several excellent games and aren't relying on past glory like many other developers (i.e. the FARCRY and CRYSIS series is a good example). Each of those series seem to be doing less and less in sales and disappear after a few months of release.

I can wait, though I hate it.

@brianthesnail12

Buddy. I think it's better for Valve to take their time with HL3/Ricochet2:D than we getting a game worse than the other two. See it this way. All Crysis games since first Crysis in 2007 have been sucky compared to original Crysis 1. Now on the other hand. HL1 was great but HL2 was better and if you want to keep it that way, (i sure as hell want to) i suggest not being mad about not having the game yet. Rather have it fully polished and good then short, bad and buggy, right?

@squareenix1991 Well i am 45 years old, and me and all my friends have been waiting for the release of the real episode 3 of the  all time best gameon the planet. Been playing every day video-games since 1988. Have a daughter age 16. But sometimes i play through Halflife 2, and im waiting as hell! Age has nothing to do with it, if you are really interested...

floridadragon67

@squareenix1991 Not true. Diablo 3, StarCraft 2, and several other titles have sold extremely well and got excellent ratings.

And as for old gamers, there are more and more of them because guys like me (I am 44) were around when the video games exploded and I still play and have been married for 17 years. On my friends list for Steam, i have at least half of the 117 guys that are 35 or older, so might want to watch what you say and make sure your facts are there before commenting.

@squareenix1991 I'm 51 and my friends and I can't wait for Half life 3. At least Valve is going forward. Not like other games which seem to be stuck on old graphic engines and stories. (How many more war games can we play and how many shaky carbines can we shoot.) It gets boring fast. I go back and replay half life 2 sometimes and it still seems fresher than COD Black ops 2. If Valve takes their time and gets it right instead of throwing some POS at us they will go down in history as a very rich company. :D

 @djdeepakjana

Half-Life 2 is not the greatest game ever. Half-Life 1 is number one in my list and I've been waiting for long, long time for "black mesa source" to complete their mod. Which is basically HL1 with the HL2 engine. Anyways when a HL3 gets out I would love to see some next gen graphics that's even better than CryEngine 3 and of course Earth liberated from the Combine. Oh yeah, I've heard rumors that Valve wants to make a movie... they might wanna take a look at that guy who made "What's in the box"

@triadwarfare u cant compare HL and COD cuz they r different types of games.HL is a story based shooter, the emphasis is on story. COD is strictly a shooter where nobody really cares about the story.Thats why everybody just plays multiplayer.

@TheOnlyConan I guess, but totally different genres, like me saying "Peggle is good, but GTA IV is better". No comparison.
