New Mass Effect: Andromeda Video Shows Off Squadmate Jaal

Jaal's personal journey will mirror yours in Andromeda, BioWare says.

The new videos for Mass Effect: Andromeda continue to come in. Following last week's launch trailer and more footage from PAX East this weekend, the latest is a character spotlight video from IGN that shines a light on the alien Jaal, who eventually becomes one of your squadmates.

"Jaal is a very cards-on-the-table, heart-on-the-sleeve kind of guy," writer Cathleen Rootsaert explains. "So that can make your interactions with him very fun and interesting."

When you first encounter Jaal, he's a member of the Angaran resistance, which is fighting a long war with the Khet and emboldened by its new leader, Ephra. Jaal accompanies you because the Angara don't trust humans. That's because the last group they met, the Khet, have only done bad things to them.

"It's kind of a really nice journey to watch him grow from someone who is not so sure of himself to someone who is. And that very much mirrors the journey of the Pathfinder as well," Rootsaert says.

Andromeda is almost here. The long-awaited game officially arrives on March 21, though Xbox One and PC players with an EA/Origin Access membership can play a 10-hour trial starting on March 16.

In other news, it's been revealed that the game has more than 1,200 speaking characters, which is far more than Mass Effect 3 had.
