Maxim sponsoring Gears of War: Judgment content

[UPDATE] Men's magazine partners with Epic Games for free post-release maps Haven and Capitol, as well as Execution mode; no Maxim-branded content will be in-game.

[UPDATE] An Epic Games representative told GameSpot its deal with Maxim for Gears of War: Judgment will not result in in-game Maxim-branded content.

"The deal with Maxim is just a co-promotional deal that allows us to release the pack for free. It doesn't include any Maxim-branded content in the game," the company said.

The original story follows below

Gears of War: Judgment will add two post-launch free multiplayer maps "sponsored" by men's magazine Maxim, as well as a new Execution mode, Epic Games has announced.

Epic Games did not detail its sponsorship agreement with Maxim for the maps and game mode, though the company said this content will be released on April 2.

The maps in question are Capitol and Haven, the latter of which (pictured) is set on a frozen wasteland in the fictional Azura mountains on Planet Sera. The map features an asymmetrical layout, as well as vantage points for snipers. Details on the Capitol map were not divulged.

As for the Maxim-sponsored Execution mode, this game type tasks each team with killing all members of the opposing squad before time runs out. If players are not killed with one-shot kill weapons, they enter a "down-but-not-out" state and will be revived at the end of a bleed-out timer. Players must find these downed enemies and perform an execution kill to vanquish the foe once and for all.

Gears of War: Judgment is due out exclusively on the Xbox 360 March 19, 2013, and is the first entry in the series since 2011's trilogy-capping Gears of War 3.

Developed by Epic Games in conjunction with Bulletstorm studio People Can Fly, the project focuses on series soldier Damon Baird and will not use the Kinect.

So Epic can;t even release anything free anymore - it always needs some poor sap to pay for it, be it the gamers or another company. I wonder if this money-hungry business model contributed to Fergusson and Bleszinski leaving.

I remember they did this for gears 1 with the discovery channel, It was great, games should try to do this more often.

So long as it is free, I am not bothered. I like the idea of sponsored content if it means it can be free!

I'm not going to sit here and complain about free maps, but of course I can't help but wonder what Maxim is getting out of it, though that really isn't anyone else's business. Now here's what Gears players already knew without reading the article, 1. How to play Execution. 2. The map is asymmetrical.

I like this idea versus DLC that costs the end-user all the time, even if it puts a subtle logo in somewhere or a "Sponsored by Maxim" image or something. Maybe perhaps have both, free and an option to pay for it and remove the logo.

I really want to play this game, but there's no way I'm paying 60 bucks for this.

@steelmouth I agree, to be honest they haven't shown me anything to be excited about other than an update to the multiplayer.

@queuing_for_PS4 MS learnt from the mistake they did with Mass Effect so i dont think it will ever happen again, by now all thier deals with 3rd party decelopers should be air tight

@queuing_for_PS4 Most likely not. Don't be surprised if Microsoft already signed a contract with Epic Games to do more Gears games exclusively for the new Xbox next gen.

@endorbr It's a little late in the series to expect anything less.

She has been on a Jihad against sexism toward females in the gaming world. It's a commendable effort but it's starting to turn into a feminist crusade against the gaming industry where even the golden rule of "Sex Sells" is an abomination ,if used for a game.

This game(she talked about it in 1 of her tirade) cater mainly to a male audience and now is in partnership with magazine which easily fall into the atrocious objectifying of rather very attractive women in scantily clad clothes...

@frozenux Well, no one can really deny that sexism still exists in the gaming industry. I can't comment on it because I just don't really know how bad it is. I'm sure that she's not the one woman who might be bothered by this.
