Mark Hamill Talks Episode 8's Title And How It Has A "Samurai" Feel

Big news today for Star Wars, as Lucasfilm confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be officially called The Last Jedi. Now, Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, has come forward to say he likes the name and more.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Hamill was asked for his reaction to the title. He replied, "Well, it's got a real samurai...straightforward and minimalist. And I like that."

Hamill added that director Rian Johnson told him the name a long time ago and he was burdened with keeping the secret ever since. "I said, 'Don't tell me these things; I talk in my sleep!' They have us so jacked up with paranoia over leaks," Hamill said. "But that's the way of the world."

"It's funny because back when we were making the original, nobody cared," he added.

There are no concrete details as to the plot for The Last Jedi as of yet, though we know the story was written by Johnson. Earlier this month, Johnson said he has known the title for The Last Jedi for years; it was in his original draft for the movie and he had to keep it a secret until now, apparently.

The Last Jedi opens immediately after The Force Awakens and a big part of the movie is apparently going to be the bond between these two major characters. Additionally, Kylo Ren actor Adam Driver has shared some insight into his character and how he's evolved for The Last Jedi.

Some of The Last Jedi's actors have said the movie will be "darker" than The Force Awakens, but it remains to be seen what that means. Regarding the movie's tone Johnson said in an interview, "I want it to be a blast and to be funny and to be a ride the way The Force Awakens and the original Star Wars movies were."

Following a delay, The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017. It also stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. Carrie Fisher filmed her Leia scenes for the movie before she passed away in December.
