Keiji Inafune crowns King of Pirates for Nintendo 3DS

Former Capcom producer prepping new action RPG franchise as trilogy of games; first title out in 2012.

The last time gamers heard from ex-Capcom producer Keiji Inafune, he was working on both a mobile game and a Compile Heart collaboration project. According to a recent post on Famitsu, Inafune has also announced that his company Intercept (sister to his other game studio Comcept) will be developing a game called King of Pirates for the Nintendo 3DS. Inafune made the statement during a Marvelous AQL (formerly Marvelous Entertainment) merger press conference.

According to the game's official site, King of Pirates is an action role-playing game that features multiplayer support. Gamers take control of a penguin that has to lead a ragtag team of animal pirates in a high seas-themed adventure based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms historical novel. The game will feature over 300 creatures ranging from cows to dragons and will be tailored after major RoTK characters.

According to the former Capcom producer, the game's story will focus on themes like friendship and betrayal between crew members. While the aesthetics suggest that it's a children's title, Inafune mentioned that he hopes adults will try it out as well.

The producer plans on turning the franchise into a trilogy of games. The title is a joint production between Inafune's game production company Intercept and Marvelous AQL, publishers of Grand Knights History. The game is scheduled to be out in 2012, though a more specific window has yet to be confirmed.

If I'm getting this, the only reason is because of how much I love RoTK and how much I want to see it in more games (those by Koei doesn't count).

He's probably just testing the waters, a kid type game on a kid type console.

I was gonna say this looked like it won't do well... until I noticed Keiji Inafune was behind the game.

Here's to hoping this is a thinly veiled 'rebadged' Megaman Legends 3.

@leeko_link IF Capcom stops pulling their crap, that is. And I mean STOP. I'm still waiting (as are many of you I'm sure) for a new Mega Man game, be it Classic, X, or Legends.

Yeah RPG is always welcome to the 3DS library. After this Capcom could always try to revived their beloved Breath of Fire RPG series for 3DS too.

Sounds good! The 3DS could always use some more RPGs.

I may have a look at it. I doubt it will comfort me after the loss of Legends 3,which I believe Inafune should be as upset about as I am. He made Megaman into a pillar of gaming, and now that he's out of Capcom,it's like the company is trying to kill the Blue Bomber! How dare they! Perhaps that's why he's making this action RPG. To find a little way to ease the pain caused by Capcom's stupidity.

Does it seem a little counterproductive that an industry so obsessed with eliminating piracy keeps selling us fiction that glamorizes pirates?

Romance of the 3 Kingdoms... the old Hong Kong adaption of that old novel from China was pretty good, not as good as Journey to the West though. :P Also, Action RPG? So maybe this will be Inafune's way of apologizing to Megaman Legends fans, by giving them another action RPG. I look forward to this game.
