Just Cause dev teases new game

Avalanche Studios cofounder Christofer Sundberg releases blurry image showing off one of the company's three unannounced games.

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios cofounder Christofer Sundberg has released (via Kotaku) a blurry teaser image believed to be for one of the studio's three unannounced projects. The image (below right) shows off a character riding a motorcycle through a desert scene while kicking an assailant into the dust.

The image may contain a reference to the Just Cause series, as the character's left hand looks to feature the series-famous grappling hook. If this game is indeed the rumored Just Cause 3, it would mark a departure from the first two game's tropical settings, though this image may not be representative of the entire game.

Avalanche has previously confirmed one of its unannounced games--Project Mamba--is in development for next-generation consoles and PC for a launch in 2014.

The studio is headquartered in Sweden and opened a New York City office in November 2011.

Avalanche is best known for its well-regarded open-world action franchise Just Cause, the most recent installment from which launched in March 2010. In September 2011, the company released Renegade Ops, a vehicular dual-stick shooter that received a favorable critical reception.

As long as Just cause 3 is like the second one then thats fine with me. They could also add some thing that they did with sleeping dogs like slow motion and they should plabably add air shooting, because that would make a baddass level.

Just Cause is still one of the - if not the - most beautiful open world game series ever made (sorry Rockstar, your games are better but in sheer visual pizzazz JC takes the cake), hopefully they amp up the silliness in JC3 (this guy looks too much like Rico for it not to be) and maybe add a bit of actual story. But even if they don't, it'd still be awesome. JC2 was one of the most surprisingly good games I've played, JC1 was very shallow, repetitive and boring but JC2 had such flair that even if there is repetition, it's a game you can just keep coming back to because the map is so huge and varied and above all FUN!

Just Cause 2 was a very good fun game, with horrible voice acting and terrible sound.  Just Cause 3 would be good news to me, just add stealth mechanics, fix the pathetic sound and voices and please, explosions should cause shockwaves!

Just Cause 2 was one of those games that simply tried to be open world and huge and complex and was instead repetitive and unimaginative...

By the way- that isn't a grapple. Looks more like a spanner or hammer he's holding.

That bike has a sidecar so... better be Nazis, end of story. Though I'd accept a Mad Max game. So sick of post apocalyptic games forcing you everywhere on foot. God I miss the likes of Interstate 76...

Just Cause 2 had a desert area so it very well can be a Just Cause 3.

Maybe it's a new IP at the same time. I guess we just have to wait and see.

Looks more like the dude on the left is riding an invisible motorcycle. The dude on the right doesn't like that, because it limits his own abilities of showing off, so he kicks him out of frustration and also in an attempt to make the left dude eat dust. That way only the right dude is left.

Why did he even say that "it would mark a departure from the first two game's tropical settings" when Just Cause 2 had just about every setting that we know of in the world; tropical, desert, snow, marine etc.

It's more than likely from the Mad Max game they are developing. At least thats what it looks llike to me.

@PinchySkree Nope.  That would be Call of Duty.  Just Cause 2 is silly fun that knows it's silly fun.  Looking forward to whatever they make next.

@jagcivtec What was so bad about the voice acting? If you mean the accents, it's a Singapore accent. It wasn't amazing but other than goofy (but accurate) accents, it wasn't awful. Sound was pretty good, too. Lots of punch and impact on explosions and all that.

jagcivtec
jagcivtec

@IanNottinghamX Tried to be?, it was definitely open world and huge, not very complex though, and as repetitive as any other game I would say.  Unimaginative, yes.

@brok  The guy getting knocked off does look a WWII era solder of some type.  Regarding Mad Max, with the new movie coming in 2014 there might be a game made.  I love Mad Max, but even if they made a game I doubt it will be what I want.  What I would want is an open world RPG-ish game with scavenging, crafting, heavy on vehicle usage with lots of places to explore, but of course only if you have enough gas :).

Got me thinking now, might be a cool departure from the usual, with very few guns and very little ammo.  Instead, vehicle combat would be more about smashing opponents into things, making their vehicles roll over, or just plain escaping when you're too far outnumbered.  You could even have situations where injured drivers could crawl out of their vehicles and possibly still pose some threat when you return to scavenge.

Ok, I went way off topic, I'll stop myself now, got too excited pondering a Mad Max game :).

@holtrocks there was alot of ausome in just cause 2, if it goes multiplayer im not sure if i could handle that much ausome.

@Ibra8 Really? It wouldn't be silly to put it in there, but i found to be getting shot from everywhere most of the time. And do we really want more cover based shooting?

jagcivtec

@MordeaniisChaos @jagcivtecThe voice acting, It was bad, and you really have to do a contrast to other games, including Just Cause 1 to notice how poor the overall gun and explosion sounds were, very buffered, more like "puff" than BANG.

Darmage
Darmage

@MordeaniisChaos @jagcivtec No, i have to agree it really did suck. Though I don't think it was so much bad voice acting but boring characters. I wouldn't be too bothered if they got rid of Rico and started fresh.

brok

@hystavito @brok That pretty much sums up my ideal Mad Max game- except in later levels you come across a band living in a Pine Gap-type military complex, and car mounted weapons start to come into play. Only very late-game though.
