Guild Wars II Twilight Assault update revealed

Latest content update for MMO launching October 1; includes new events and rewards; next free trial weekend begins Friday evening.

ArenaNet today announced Twilight Assault, the newest content update for massively multiplayer online role-playing game Guild Wars II, launching on October 1.

The developer said the update "continues ArenaNet's commitment" to releasing new content for players every two weeks, a rate it claims is faster than any other Western competitor.

"In Twilight Assault, trouble is stirring in Twilight Arbor and rumors abound that Scarlet Briar, the devious leader of the Aetherblades, is behind the suspicious activity," reads a line from the content's description. "Players will join the sylvari hero Caithe in attempting to stop Scarlet's scheming, but it will take daring, wits, and weaponry to put an end to the mischief."

Twilight Assault also features a new level 80 path in Twilight Arbor where players can work together to find a way into a hidden facility where they will battle guards and monsters.

New rewards offered in the update include the Slickpack back item and new versions of the Nightmare weapons. In addition, players can collect Aether Key Pieces from across Tyria and combine all five to form a key that will open Aether Chests in Twilight Arbor.

Gamers can get an early look at Twilight Assault during a preview livestream with ArenaNet developers on Monday, September 30 at 12 noon PDT through Twitch.

Finally, ArenaNet also announced today that the next Guild Wars II free trial weekend will take place Friday, September 27 through Thursday, October 3.

Guild Wars II launched in August 2012 and has sold over 3.5 million copies to date. It is the fastest-selling Western MMO ever, according to data from research company DFC Intelligence. The game's playerbase is expected to grow substantially when it is released in China.

The sheer amount of content this game has is incredible.  If you're one of those types that likes leveling toons, this game is for you.  I played WoW for years, and the part I liked least was leveling, I was more into the endgame stuff.  This game however, it is an absolute joy to level, it never feels tedious or grindy,

I'm still pretty new, I bought the game after the last free trial, but I gotta say, it's tons of fun, with no subscription, and I can't imagine you possibly getting more for your money, don't know how they manage to do it without a subscription fee.  I highly recommend you at least try it when they do their next free trial, even if you've tried other MMOs and thought they weren't for you, still try it, this is different.  It seems to actively seek out and fix the boring parts of other MMOs.

gw2 remains the best themepark mmo to date putting wow to shame

haters gonna hate nuff said

so as one gw2 article appears, all the camping haters just jump out of nowhere pointing out faults when they've never touched it even. now that i think about it, this applies to almost every hate towards a game which is reviewed well.

the combat too is beyond simple random button spamming, classes play uniquely with each having unique key skills. if you want real challenge go pvp, not come to a game news publishing website to write farfetched claims when you've never tried it.

So I see hate and love comments. How is this game, care to tell me about cons and pros?

They're almost putting out to much content for me to keep up with.

This month alone with adventure box, Teq battles, ascended weps...hope they realize some of us have to work for a living.

No!  You have to say the WHOLE THING: "A Pimp Named Slickpack"

i liked the classes but the combat is boring. just mashing 1234 and hope for the best.mobas and d3 have better combat where there are certain times to use certain skills

Translation: Slightly altered versions of pre-existing content, but the highlight of the event are the new cash-shop weapon skins. The only way to get these weapon skins are to buy lockboxes from the cash shop, where the skins have a very small percentage of dropping. Like a slot machine, just with no cash payouts.

Every Guild Wars 2 event is like this.

The art of this game is so dark, dramatic and cool, but when I got online it looked like a Barbie dolls convention.

So is this challenging content for level capped characters, or just more narrative stuff? I stopped playing when I reached level cap because it seemed like there was really no point beyond that - no major challenging enemy to try to kill. I need challenging content to justify the grind of getting all the end game weapons and what not. There has to be a point!

No one whining because this is called *Twilight* Assault? Good! Just because one popular book/movie series is called one common word like twilight doesn't mean any other future thing can't be called that.

Guild Wars 2 is such a good game, still playing it today :)

I played it for a while, but never actually beat it. I left this game to play TERA, and now that I'm pretty bored of TERA (it is definitely fun, but needs more content), I may go back to playing this game. Visuals are amazing, and gameplay is decent. I guess I'll have to check out this latest update.

It was an ok game, they over simplified combat and most classes fight almost exactly the same, no variation. But they do release a lot of content, my brother still plays and always talks about it trying to get me back in to the game.

I liked  this game for 3 months, the lack of end game and the ugly korean art style killed all immersion, i wish the character models looked a bit like the art of the game.

On the bright side, after the last GW2 article posted here, I decided to play it again.  Got to level 4 before I quit.  WIN.

@Gosha14 I'm interested as well. Too many trolls commenting and lack the skill to articulate information. Saying something is great with no explanation is just as bad as saying 'worst game evar'.

@edant79 Completely agree with you. I can barely catch up with the prior releases.  I'd rather they slow it down a little bit.

@JudgeSim have you really played guild wars 2? the combat is amazing(at least with classes i played). Its not about 1234 or the godlike build...its about the PLAYER's skill...if you know how to play and when to use your characters skills you can make some awesome combos and effects.

@DMND What do you expect when their palette of dyes includes every pastel color in existence?

carlow

@DMND Agree... I must admit, the concept art of this game was a huge deciding factor when I bought it on launch. It's so badass. The game launched and after a couple of weeks playing, huge numbers of semi-naked women wearing pink skirts were all I could see at all times.

It's so retarded. One of the many reasons I stopped playing. I ain't saying GW2 is bad, I got my money's worth, but this asiatic hentai theme just destroys the immerson and satisfaction for me.

@DMND Did you get out of the starting zone?  I'm guessing you didn't play a Charr.

@ecs33 you should really, REALLY take a look at the updated tequatl fight. half the servers in the game have yet to take him down, and even the ones that succeeded (through skill and coordination) don't defeat it 100% of the time.

@Assimilat0r 360 degrees is a perfect circle.  Which would imply they have made no progress at all.  I believe what you mean is they've done a 180.

@scowny97 I just got back to it from playing vindictus and tera. GW2 is more my kind of game.

DKRises
DKRises

@Jacen22 Oversimplified combat? How? Literally every other MMO you sit in one spot mashing 1-9 while only using arrow keys to move left/right out of crap that could kill you.

GW2 requires dodging, fast weapon swapping and efficient comboing to survive and do decent damage.

DKRises
DKRises

@poromenos You know that's what patches are for right? If you played right when the game came out of course there wasn't shit to do. Like the article says though they work on releasing new content every 2 weeks.

The ugly art is your opinion and has nothing to do with game immersion.

KiraDEATHNOTE

@G4m3r0uTL4wZ

sorry but some people find it fun and much better to get into that games like tera. I like gw2 is very fun and simple to play. Maybe that's why I never got into mmos until gw

@shreddyz @Gosha14 pros are the game in its entirety is great having unique tropes compared to other MMOs i.e. no linear fetch-backtrack quests, having the best gear isn't a must. There's an abundance of things to do, but the main problem of the game is that its way too balanced. End game isn't about gearing up your character to have the best stat gear, but about achieving the perfect look on your character. Almost every activity has very little incentive although is fun to do. IMO every other MMO is somewhat driven by extreme RNG-driven loot gameplay with that sense of grinding and getting lucky at one point to get the ultimate gear which feels indefinitely good. GW2 however has you doing a variety to get the ultimate gear (legendary weapons) which is a slow progress and rather not luck based. The activities are fun and levelling in this game is sheer joy, but endgame immersion really depends on what you're interested in doing.

@shreddyz @Gosha14 It sucks...wayyyy too repetitive and doesn't have anything in common with the first Guild Wars. Save yourself some money, get Final Fantasy 14 instead imo

yeah same here... I hate having to download so much every week. It's good that their supporting the game so well but they should slow it down a little.

@carlow @DMND

On the last part I disagree. I don't see it asiatic hentai theme at all. It's cool and hot. It's better than tera's outfits...it's a little too much and sad...Elins enough said.

@emperiox @RAD_RADIO lol? Isn't even a GW game? There's only ever been one other GW game and it was undeniably a WoW clone. If it went your way and they released GW1 again it would have failed.

@di4lg4 @shreddyz @Gosha14

pros : nice visuals , arena net hard work , some nice moves, pve guild content can be fun ( at times), pvp is decent and balanced ( but you wont feel its rpg pvp most of the time)

cons : end game scaling is crazy . Items dont have personality, ( same stats , diferent looks ).Its not a game its 3 mini games inside one ( pve, wvwvw , pvp ) the way they are separaded and are the worts part to me

emperiox
emperiox

@alpha_unit97 @emperiox @RAD_RADIO LOL ok w/e. GW1 was far superior to this piece of garbage. GW 1 actually had a story, epic cutscenes, and a dark feel to it. Oh yeah, and armor sets actually meant something in that game. I still remember my first black dye...GW2 implies that this is a direct sequel...it's not. Seriously don't even get me started on the leveling system. It's so goddam broken.
