GTAV could sell 20 million units by March, says analyst

Sterne Agee's Arvind Bhatia says upcoming open-world game has opportunity to perform "substantianlly better" than GTAIV due to larger installed base.

Grand Theft Auto V has the potential to sell 18-20 million units by the end of Take-Two's fiscal year in March 2014, according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia.

The game has the opportunity to perform "substantially better" than 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV because the console installed base is now an estimated three times larger, Bhatia said in a note to investors.

Worldwide Xbox 360 sales stand at 78.2 million, while Sony has sold an estimated 78 million PlayStation 3 units since launch, meaning GTAV will release on platforms owned by more than 156 million gamers across the world.

According to Bhatia's data, GTAIV sold-in 11 million units in its first month and more than 13 million units in the first 9 months following release. The game has sold 25 million copies to date.

GTAV launches September 17 worldwide only on Xbox 360 and PS3. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

IMO it's going to sell at least 8 million units on day one, breaking the sales record currently held by CoD: BO2 at 7.5M. GTA IV did 3.6M on launch back in 2008 with a user base that was under 40 million. I don't see it doing around 10% of the current install base but I think 8M to 10M is a safe, conservative bet.

Oh boy, another analyst article.

Tell me more about the hypothetical future. I'm learning a lot about the game.

'18-20 million' That's IT?! Those analysts need to learn math...people will probably BUY a gaming console just to play the awesomeness that is GTA V.

No, not all PC gamers pirate. The majority of us buy the game and with all the good sales we get on PC it is not difficult to pay for the game.

My superior PC will run this game with 90+fps with ALOT better graphics. Enjoy playing this game with 30-40fps with only 720p.

It'll only sell 20+ million IF it comes out for PS4, X1 (like anyone will get 1), and PC on the same day as the consoles release with only a month difference at the max. Any later than that, and they would be competing with too many titles, GTA would be picked up on a sale.

PC petition is over 200,000 strong, with a large portion of the PC community not even bothering with the petition. It's an entire market neglected. Then you'd have people picking up next-gen consoles, of which those switching from Xbox to PS won't be getting GTA at ALL unless it's on next-gen because they don't want 2 running subs with a gen soon dying.

The entire approach Rockstar has taken with GTA5 is f***ing baffling. Bring it out on all platforms, and you'd get your sales figures. Don't, and you'll see less because of the Next-Gen jump. Pretty simple.

Well they are trying to cash in on the old code before new consoles hit the market. Games made for outdated hardware wont make much money afterwards, GTA 4 was disaster dispite the nice trailers who writes the dialogue in these games. Would be much more excited for a sequel to sleeping dogs.

Wish it was out for PC at the same time as I would have got that but I still have pre orded it for PS3 though.

@CrushedGear I agree. Watch dogs looks better and seems more innovative. Will definitely pick it up instead of GTA.

@JustArtificial Nah you're totally wrong.

It'll sell no matter which generation it's on, but not necessarily if people have to buy a new console.  There's millions of people waiting to see what happens with the next gen before they make their move.

Selling it on PS3 and 360 will get the most sales by far, and they can't afford for it not to with the amount of years they've spent on it.  It won't get released on PS4 or XBOX ONE at all.

This is standard approach.

roganth

@JustArtificial After GTA5 has sold tens of millions on PS3 and 360, and once the next-gen install base is up they will probably release it on PS4 and xbone.  Sometime after that when the console sales die down PC owners can look forward to Red Dead Redemption.

@Enforcer246 You like living in your delusional little world where you somehow convinced yourself 5 wasn't coming to PC, don't you you little idiot. Now excuse my while I play the system that has had EVERY GTA game except the 2 handheld ones.

xanthan1
xanthan1

@SmackJoker @xanthan1 @Enforcer246 You do get Rockstar North is not Rockstar Sandiego, right? That what one releases on PC in no way affects what the other does? Because only idiots like you who don't get that use RDR as an example.

You might as well try using a game made by id Software not going to a certain system as a reason for a Bethseda game not going to it, I mean both are owned by ZeniMax Media Inc, and the(completely wrong) logic that follows from that, that you yourself tried to use when you brought up RDR, says they can't release a game on that console because id didn't. Reality does not work that way.

Also no, they never stated it was or was not coming to PC, they just dodged the question without saying one way or the other. Learn to read, you idiot.

SmackJoker
SmackJoker

@xanthan1 @Enforcer246 But GTA V isn't coming to PC due the neglection of the fanbase on the PC, and the fact that Rockstar have stated it isn't coming to PC. PC and Consoles are both very good, and I'm not being Biased. But in all honety, Enforcer is right. You will not experience GTA V on the PC. At all. And if you do, enjoy waiting 2 years for them to make a half assed port. All I'll say is, Red Dead Redemption never appeared to PC, so what makes GTA V any different? It's not bound to PC because it's previous generations have been.

Research before you go calling people an idiot.
