78.2 million Xbox 360s sold

Microsoft's current-generation system reaches new sales milestone since launch in 2005.

by

Microsoft sold 1 million Xbox 360s during the past three months, helping push worldwide life-to-date sales to 78.2 million, the company has revealed as part of its latest earnings report.

The 1 million systems sold during the quarter is down slightly from 1.1 million consoles sold during the same period last year.

By comparison, PlayStation 3 sales are estimated to be around 77 million units. Meanwhile, the original Wii has outpaced both platforms by a healthy margin, selling close to 100 million systems to date.

Microsoft's Xbox division posted $134 million in revenue (up 8 percent) for the period ended June 30. Xbox Live transactional revenue jumped 20 percent, the company said.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

I love how the 77 million PS3 unit estimates are from January 10th.

Gamespot really should just be renamed "Microsoft Damage Control" with the amount of pro-Microsoft articles they post either defending the Xbox One's blunders or platitudinous boasting nonsense like this. The numbers are wrong, as others have stated, considering the PS3 actually has more sales than the 360 from various official sources.

Great journalistic research guys.

LoL .. Xbox 360 Is A Joke . Sony Wins For Me Cause I Use It As a Blue Ray Player And Let Alone Kingdom Hearts And Free Online Gaming Just Makes It A Win . Sorry To The Xbox Fan Boys But Its A Fact Microsoft Just eats Your Money .. You Might Aswell Go Buy a Pc . But in the end of the day PC gaming is where its all at :)

This have to be a mistake because on the VGChart the 360 sold 77.96 million and the PS3 sold 78.35 million.

half of these sales are from gamers replacing because of RROD

50 million of these probably no longer work...

I've lost 2 Xbox 360s to red lights and I've lost 1 ps3 to yellow light of death.Over a period of 7 years that's not so bad. Although I probably play my Xbox 10x more often than my ps3.

# of xbox that rrod on me or others I later sold the system to: 7

no wonder they sold so much..not to mention all the rrods in unsupported regions where it is cheaper to buy a new system that to send for repair.

The original Wii sold close to 100 million units because of it's casual appeal. The Xbox One has casual appeal with Kinect, TV, motion, and voice commands!!!

I am on my third Xbox 360 because the first 2 went on meltdown. When I see that MS has sold 78.2 million of them I read it as MS has 26.06 million Xbox 360's still in operation.

With my PS3 its the same one from 2008.

PS3 sold more than 360 in 2010, 2011, and 2012...i'm pretty sure it has already sold more this year....PS3 sales are probably estimated at 79million to date

i think the word console needs to go  why console means portable and been here a long time and nobody takes their console`s with them to there buddy`s  house to play because he or she has one,so we will call them mini PC`S and by the way PC`s sold more last quarter .........

hordaak

not bad considering MS started with nothing and came to DOMINATE the console market....

lol. anything positive about the 360 just makes the sony fangirls go nuts!! wow..calm down...your ps3 is still selling..dont worry...

They should now subtract how many units were bought as a result of the red ring of death. I bought 2 because of it.... PS3 still wins

@Skrilla_XS Just let it go. the numbers are close enough that it really doesn't matter, especially when you consider that the 360 has had a whole extra year

@Auzzie_Exo I'm confused how Microsoft is a joke? Is it because it's sold more units than Playstation 3? No, no that can't be it...is it because Microsoft is a more successful company? No, that can't be it either...care to elaborate?

Bigjoe1627

Yeah somebody must have looked at it wrong because the PS3 was 78.2 million.

@hardeman This is a ridiculous assumption, you can't possibly believe that. On top of that Sony has their own overheating issues as well and just never owned up to it

@zintarr ditto. my second xbox died earlier this year. 2nd one since '07. still have my launch day 60gb ps3 from '06. runs like a champ, but man is it loud.

@hordaak YEAH, IT'S HARD TO BEAT A COMPANY THAT DOESN'T CARE WHETHER OR NOT IT LOSES MONEY. 78 MILLION UNITS LATER AND XBOX STILL HASN'T TURNED A PROFIT FOR MICROSOFT. WHAT

XBOtime
XBOtime

@casswc its too bad you bought those, Microsoft was replacing them free of charge. Sony charged a fee to fix the ylod issue, so no, ps3 does not win, that was a sleazy thing of Sony to do.

@BorgMind00 its not an assumption, ask around, nearly everyone with an XBox 360 is on (at least) their  2nd or 3rd console, myself included.

hardeman

@BorgMind00

the failure rate

playstation 3: 10.6

nintendo wii:6.8

microsoft xbox 360: 54.2

tell me its just an assumption

@DukeMagnum @hordaak

Pull your head out of your ass. Xbox has been profitable for Microsoft since 4QTR 2008. In sharp contrast, Sony's first net profit off of the Playstation was in 2012.  Please check facts before you embarrass yourself.

@UnrealPro @casswc Yeah, that happened....Or so I hear anyway. Never happened to mine, or anyone that I know for that matter....

Bigjoe1627
Bigjoe1627

@UnrealPro  What that happen mines never did that and I had my PS3 for 5 years. I rather go with a console that only have 10% of failing than 54% any day.

bakagami
bakagami

@XBOtime yeah, MS fixed them for free....when they finally got around to admitting that there was a problem

Skrilla_XS
Skrilla_XS

@afrsamurai88 It happened to two of mine. I no longer own a 360, just a supped up PC, Wii, and PS3.

bakagami
bakagami

@UnrealPro @bakagami @casswc but all this crap is irrelevant anyway. Both the RROD and the YLOD, or all of the other little surprises that both consoles had for us are in the past.  How long do you plan to beat that dead horse anyway?

UnrealPro
UnrealPro

@bakagami @UnrealPro @casswc The auto loading disc tray in the PS3 was a problem. That's why it was REMOVED for the super slims. It was also removed to cut manufacturing costs. My facts are straight pal, just because it never happened to you doesn't mean it didn't happen to other people.

UnrealPro
UnrealPro

@Bigjoe1627 @UnrealPro Your statistics are 3-4 years outdated. You forgot to take into account of the hardware revisions such as the Slim and the E consoles. The hardware reliability has evened out on MS and Sony's sides.

Bigjoe1627
Bigjoe1627

@UnrealPro Yeah I did a little bit but I got my information from IGN and Gamespot. Go check it out for your self if you don't believe me.

UnrealPro
UnrealPro

@Bigjoe1627 @UnrealPro You're fudging the numbers pal, and you know you made up those percentages. Both consoles have had their share of hardware failures. RROD and E74 error for 360, YLOD, faulty auto loading disk drives (why do you think the super slims have a manual loader now?) and PS Network hacking and outage.
