GTA 5 PC petition approaching 700,000 signatures; it's been 216 days since the console version arrived

The Change.org petition calling on Rockstar Games to release its open-world action game Grand Theft Auto V for PC is closing in on a whopping 700,000 signatures. It has 690,000 signatures right now, up from 650,000 earlier this year.

GTAV was released in September 2013 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In addition to a positive critical reception, the open-world game generated $800 million in 24 hours and more than $1 billion in three days. It has since shipped 32.5 million copies.

The game is widely expected to come to PC sometime in 2014. In October, multiple Eurogamer sources said GTAV would be released for PC in early 2014, while a representative for Chip maker Intel has said that GTAV is not expected to be a console-exclusive for much longer.

2008's Grand Theft Auto IV launched in April for consoles before coming to PC in December of that year. If you want to get really specific, GTA IV was released for PC 217 days after the console version hit. By comparison, it's been 216 days since GTA V launched for consoles.

Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser said in November 2012 that a PC version of the open-world game is "up for consideration," though that's all the company has said on the matter. Another high-profile Rockstar Games title, 2010's Red Dead Redemption, never came to PC.

The petition says it is a "big shame" that GTAV is not announced for the PC, specifically calling out the modding community being a "huge part" of PC gaming. "Modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have," a line from the petition reads.

If GTAV does come to PC, it may not be the only new platform for the game. Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian contends that the game will be released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014.

Rockstar Games is currently continuing to support GTAV's online mode, GTA Online, and is also developing all-new story DLC expansions for release this year.
