Escape From Mount Stupid - Assassin's Creed

Danny stabs his way through history without the need of a memory machine in Escape From Mount Stupid's history of the Assassin's Creed series.

We do a lot of nostalgia tripping on Escape From Mount Stupid, so it feels right to finish up season three with a look at one of the most influential and promising series in recent video game history.

Assassin's Creed hasn't been around that long, but it's impact on the third-person action genre has been immense. It's provided us with hours of satisfying, immersive gameplay and exposed gamers around the globe to the beauty of the Holy Land, Renaissance Italy and the Ottoman Empire.

There's at least one more chapter in the story coming out on this generation of consoles, but the success of the series means it's likely we'll be playing them on the machines of the future. So before we step into the shoes of Ratonhnhaké:ton, here's one final look back at the stories of Altaïr and Ezio.

Season three was great fun to produce. Thank you to everyone who helped, watched and sent in feedback. Lets do it all again in 2013!

My favorite was AC1... it by far took the most risk. Not just because it was a new IP, but it was willing to take more religious and cultural risks. I mean.. how many games these days do you play a *good* Arab? And no, I am not Arab. Thats not even to mention the religious risks it took.

Then again, AC1 is the only game in the series I actually finished. I played 2 and Brotherhood, but never finished. I skipped Rev all together.

My personal favorit AC was brotherhood it gave so much more improvements than te first games and I hope al the good thing of the previous games will be in AC III and of cours new stuff. But one of the tings I want to see back is the horse riding in the city's.

Personally speaking I felt that the AC series and the Prince of Persia series have a lot in common. Its not gameplay I'am talking. When the first POP game arrived,it was a hit and many considered it to be a revolution in gaming and GS scored it 9.0.Then the second game arrived. It was much different  as compared to the previous one and had decent amounts of blood and gore and rock music,so GS rated it 8.8.then Ubisoft was planning on releasing kindred blades, which later got cancelled and replaced by two thrones which was a 12+ game unlike kindred blades that had blood in it (actual blood not bird shit dripping from your enemies' wounds) and the speed kill sequences looked even better with blood splashing around in slow motion, but other than that both of them had similar platforming elements (newly introduced),as a result two thrones just got 8.0.The next game wasn't part of the trilogy and didn't have sand powers, but despite this it scored 8.0.However the next one wasn't so fortunate and was utterly disappointing and scored 7.5 (although I'd give a 5.0 for horrible combat and visuals).

AC2 was Something special for me. I remember my parents went away for a month. Thought I'd be inviting friends and chicks round daily. Nope. AC2 all day. Man was it worth it, everything about that game was class, really recreated the Italian renaissance well. Haven't touched the other recent games though didn't like the way they milked the ezio story. Might do when there like a fiver or something. Also even though I know AC will become a yearly thing (they'll milk the Connor story) hope they make an AC set during the french revolution. Now that would be day one buy.

It better be that Assassin's Creed III live by the creed and die by the creed. And it needs to end now. ACIII should be the last. Or else it would suffer the same fate branded to COD games, RE series, MOH,Mario games as "milking". It needs to die now and there's no better way ...but to end it in a trilogy. (well, it's not actually a trilogy). I don't want to see any AC games after this one.

Sorry if I sound picky with this Danny but "Third British Crusade"? You teleport the united kingdom to medieval times? Shame on you Irishman.

If you wanna say it right: Third Crusade led by the English King.

All of the games are great. They are a little too easy after awhile yes, and I wish they would incorporate more stealth into the game. I liked how if you actually used the maps and information required from the first game you could sneak behind without killing anyone to assassinate someone. Unlike most people I enjoyed the last game because it told more of the story.

AC series is one of the most overrated in history of gaming. When first AC was truly something new and promising and second was a big step forward in terms of gameplay mechanics and character development AC:B and AC:R is just one big disappointment.

What I hated the most was that gameplay issues that was not fixed not mentioning out of date graphics. Ezio in my opinion was very hard to manage, and often was not "listening" to the player: Jumping in directions you wouldn't even think of, selecting enemies you was not intending to attack... Since AC:2 till now all this thing remained unresolved.

Another thing is story. Background is solid: secret societies, political wars, area of influences. Good stuff. But Ezio as a person? Or Desmond? I did not care, not even for a second what they will do. How can you care so much about "the big picture" that you overlook a small detail such as main character.  Ezio seems like the worst character ever: his motivations, choices he made, and "challenges" he met along the way are one of the most shallow in a history of storytelling. Plot twists are so twisted that after AC2 it stopped to make any impression at all.

AC is still having very serious potential, but Ubisoft for some reason tends to make an enormous game with a huge areas to explore and at the same time completely neglecting the power of details. Let's hope next AC will be the good one. That combat will finally be more challenging, story a little bit ambitious and finally that the main character will be something of a character and not some lover with great luck, ugly face and not funny joke.  Still I'm not buying it, I'll might rent it, but since Ubisoft is working so hard to make Europe hate them, I might start playing it only after it gets below 15 Euros...

I hope they up the combat difficulty on this game or atleast make an option for it. I felt like, once I learned how to string executions, mowing through 10 enemies lost a lot of it's challenge. I want some witcher-esque level difficulty available.

I love to see game grumps and Two best friend play together but all the shows that Danny does are equally amazing, you should made your own channel on youtube!

The first game drives me insane, never finished it. Tried to go back to it a while ago but having got used to the combat system and pacing of AC2 and AC2:Brotherhood, I didnt last long, though was impressed just how amazing it still looks (and massive the scale of it feels).

I didnt bother with Revelations though, started to feel like a cash cow. AC3 is very tempting though...

I can't believe people still criticize the "present" part of the AC story. Yeah, it's not as fun as its assassin counterpart. but it isn't supposed to be. AC games are about narrative...telling a story, and I think it's ok to have some "not so fun" part to fulfill this intention (and thankfully, it never takes a big part of the gameplay. It works more like an interlude). And most of all, the most interesting part is how it is ESSENTIAL for its philosophical and metalinguistic purposes.  I thought everyone would be convinced about that by now...   We play someone who is "playing" someone else. Damn....how cool is that? It's unparalleled on game history. Can't wait for AC III

I still have no idea if I love or hate you Danny - You have an Irish accent which helps and the show IS informative and solid, but it's like listening to a serious report about how cool a roller coaster is - it just seems unnecessary. Plus the whole vibe of GS is "we know alot about video games (and maybe other media facets) so we are some how eclectic and better than the common man" while we are all just gamers and getting familiar with the industry is one of the easiest things you can do on this planet.Anyways just a troll rant I guess I am a fan and hoping to hear about a season 4 soon :)

Am I especially gullible since I had no problem willingly suspending my disbelief for a game that allowed me to rediscover the frustrations of intricate jumping about interspersed with assassination?  I think the quality of the story is less important to the illusion than the interaction with the world.  As the French Thomist put it, "Obviously, if there is in a substance anything that is act, it is not the matter, it is the form.  The form then is the very act whereby a substance is what it is, and, if a being is primarily or, as Aristotle himself says, almost exclusively what it is, each being is primarily and almost exclusively its form.  The distinctive character of a truly Aristotelian metaphysics of being...lies in the fact that it knows of no act superior to form, not even existence.  There is nothing above being; there is nothing above the form, and this means that the form of a given being is an act of which there is no act".  (Gilson)

Holy fuck man, you sure like to use your job as an excuse to troll people en masse, you are just spewing trash about a game you dont like, wtf made any sense of what you just said about the story on AC being useless baggage, the game script is well written and the missions act out perfectly in every installment, you are just mad they stole your rollcake with all the cliffhangers.

I like the fact that this game also adds or teaches its players a lot about the culture and personalities of locations and people that really existed. Finally, some halfwit knows the Borgias, the locations that still stand in Rome as well as masters such as Leonardo da Vinci

There have been almost as many Assassin's Creed games as there were Call of Duty games this gen. Both series needs to die. Everyone is raving about AC3 just because it's set during the American Civil War.

Danny, for me, AC's conspiracy theory and Desmond's storyline, that which you call "useless" and surplus, is one of the reasons i LOVE this franchise... It is so well presented that i can't think of ANY other game that did this better. And, as you said, i think the majority agrees.

I played the first game and found it boring and repetitive. The second game got universal praise so I bought it day one for $59 but once again found it to be boring and repetitive--I vowed not to play another AC. Now brotherhood and revelations are $5 each on steam. Tempting but, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me...
