Escape From Mount Stupid - Assassin's Creed

Danny stabs his way through history without the need of a memory machine in Escape From Mount Stupid's history of the Assassin's Creed series.

We do a lot of nostalgia tripping on Escape From Mount Stupid, so it feels right to finish up season three with a look at one of the most influential and promising series in recent video game history.

Assassin's Creed hasn't been around that long, but it's impact on the third-person action genre has been immense. It's provided us with hours of satisfying, immersive gameplay and exposed gamers around the globe to the beauty of the Holy Land, Renaissance Italy and the Ottoman Empire.

There's at least one more chapter in the story coming out on this generation of consoles, but the success of the series means it's likely we'll be playing them on the machines of the future. So before we step into the shoes of Ratonhnhaké:ton, here's one final look back at the stories of Altaïr and Ezio.

Season three was great fun to produce. Thank you to everyone who helped, watched and sent in feedback. Lets do it all again in 2013!

My favorite was AC1... it by far took the most risk. Not just because it was a new IP, but it was willing to take more religious and cultural risks. I mean.. how many games these days do you play a *good* Arab? And no, I am not Arab. Thats not even to mention the religious risks it took.

Then again, AC1 is the only game in the series I actually finished. I played 2 and Brotherhood, but never finished. I skipped Rev all together.

My personal favorit AC was brotherhood it gave so much more improvements than te first games and I hope al the good thing of the previous games will be in AC III and of cours new stuff. But one of the tings I want to see back is the horse riding in the city's.

Personally speaking I felt that the AC series and the Prince of Persia series have a lot in common. Its not gameplay I'am talking. When the first POP game arrived,it was a hit and many considered it to be a revolution in gaming and GS scored it 9.0.Then the second game arrived. It was much different  as compared to the previous one and had decent amounts of blood and gore and rock music,so GS rated it 8.8.then Ubisoft was planning on releasing kindred blades, which later got cancelled and replaced by two thrones which was a 12+ game unlike kindred blades that had blood in it (actual blood not bird shit dripping from your enemies' wounds) and the speed kill sequences looked even better with blood splashing around in slow motion, but other than that both of them had similar platforming elements (newly introduced),as a result two thrones just got 8.0.The next game wasn't part of the trilogy and didn't have sand powers, but despite this it scored 8.0.However the next one wasn't so fortunate and was utterly disappointing and scored 7.5 (although I'd give a 5.0 for horrible combat and visuals).

AC2 was Something special for me. I remember my parents went away for a month. Thought I'd be inviting friends and chicks round daily. Nope. AC2 all day. Man was it worth it, everything about that game was class, really recreated the Italian renaissance well. Haven't touched the other recent games though didn't like the way they milked the ezio story. Might do when there like a fiver or something. Also even though I know AC will become a yearly thing (they'll milk the Connor story) hope they make an AC set during the french revolution. Now that would be day one buy.

It better be that Assassin's Creed III live by the creed and die by the creed. And it needs to end now. ACIII should be the last. Or else it would suffer the same fate branded to COD games, RE series, MOH,Mario games as "milking". It needs to die now and there's no better way ...but to end it in a trilogy. (well, it's not actually a trilogy). I don't want to see any AC games after this one.

Sorry if I sound picky with this Danny but "Third British Crusade"? You teleport the united kingdom to medieval times? Shame on you Irishman.

If you wanna say it right: Third Crusade led by the English King.

Brotherhood was my favorite... hopefully ACIII isn't as much like Revelations..

All of the games are great. They are a little too easy after awhile yes, and I wish they would incorporate more stealth into the game. I liked how if you actually used the maps and information required from the first game you could sneak behind without killing anyone to assassinate someone. Unlike most people I enjoyed the last game because it told more of the story.

AC series is one of the most overrated in history of gaming. When first AC was truly something new and promising and second was a big step forward in terms of gameplay mechanics and character development AC:B and AC:R is just one big disappointment.

What I hated the most was that gameplay issues that was not fixed not mentioning out of date graphics. Ezio in my opinion was very hard to manage, and often was not "listening" to the player: Jumping in directions you wouldn't even think of, selecting enemies you was not intending to attack... Since AC:2 till now all this thing remained unresolved.

Another thing is story. Background is solid: secret societies, political wars, area of influences. Good stuff. But Ezio as a person? Or Desmond? I did not care, not even for a second what they will do. How can you care so much about "the big picture" that you overlook a small detail such as main character.  Ezio seems like the worst character ever: his motivations, choices he made, and "challenges" he met along the way are one of the most shallow in a history of storytelling. Plot twists are so twisted that after AC2 it stopped to make any impression at all.

AC is still having very serious potential, but Ubisoft for some reason tends to make an enormous game with a huge areas to explore and at the same time completely neglecting the power of details. Let's hope next AC will be the good one. That combat will finally be more challenging, story a little bit ambitious and finally that the main character will be something of a character and not some lover with great luck, ugly face and not funny joke.  Still I'm not buying it, I'll might rent it, but since Ubisoft is working so hard to make Europe hate them, I might start playing it only after it gets below 15 Euros...

I hope they up the combat difficulty on this game or atleast make an option for it. I felt like, once I learned how to string executions, mowing through 10 enemies lost a lot of it's challenge. I want some witcher-esque level difficulty available.

I love to see game grumps and Two best friend play together but all the shows that Danny does are equally amazing, you should made your own channel on youtube!

tryed getting into ass 1 but without trophy support i got bored....yes thats right trophies have ruined gaming on some levels and made it amazing on others.....

The first game drives me insane, never finished it. Tried to go back to it a while ago but having got used to the combat system and pacing of AC2 and AC2:Brotherhood, I didnt last long, though was impressed just how amazing it still looks (and massive the scale of it feels).

I didnt bother with Revelations though, started to feel like a cash cow. AC3 is very tempting though...

Lets hope they don't ditch AC in favour of I'am Alive like they ditched POP in favour of AC.

@splinter10 I hope your parents go on a holliday soon, or even better you live on your own now. AC3 is going to be epic and for me even addictive i think :S... oke oke girls are still going to be number one on my list.. "i learned that from Ezio". I have my own appartement and in a couple of days i'm going to be locked up. hehe

 @The_Great_Purge

I don't actually agree with you i would love to see another game from the series my only Concern is if they ditch AC because i used to be a POP fan and when they didn't continue the series i was very disappointed so i hope they

 don't do that again.

@ShimmerMan No,there were many new elements in the sequels such as more weapons, faster climbing, hookblade from revelations and even swimming.

@ShimmerMan  I 2nd that, but i did force myself to complete the 2nd game. then i give up the series.

Not to sure if AC3 will be any different

@huddle1 I also liked Revelations because of the extra story but it was to short, it didn't came close to my satisfaction.

The_Great_Purge

@Faster_Bill I totally agree with you. You kinda nailed it. It's a bit overrated in my opinion. Even the previous reviews by gamespot on AC titles (they gave it a fucking 9.0). It's probably the hype that goes along with it. Don't know how much Ubisoft is actually paying GS to hype it that much by featuring AC story so far part by part here. Two months ago I bought AC1 and AC2 on a discount. It was a mistake playing AC2 first because I thought it was the most recent AC of the two titles I bought. I have problems with the controls from the start. I was midway through the game ( I think ) and then I decided to stop because I lost interest with the plot of Ezio, although I got the hang of it with regards to the controls as I played on. Maybe during that time, it fits a rating of 9.0 but if you try to look back, it's overrated indeed. I would have given it an 7.5 or 8.5 the most (but as a consolation). Definitely not a 9.0 or higher.

@Faster_Bill Have to agree with you, specially about Ezio and Desmond, I could care about them while I was playing the games. Altair was kind-a badass, but the others don't feel "right". Can't really explain.

@Slade968 you cant heal yourself when fighting which makes this game a million times harder.

The_Great_Purge

@Slash7722 Because that's the way it is and that's the way it should be. It's a trend now. Most successful games offer at least a trilogy of sorts, and then you go beyond that, it's now a completely different story. I know it is a good franchise. The detailed background is superb. Although the story is quite average for me, nonetheless it's an 8.0-rating game for me overall.

Yeah maybe someday or the next day I will see this game die. Just as I expect to see the same for RE series, Metal Gear series, GTA, Uncharted and the like. They will become legends.

I've seen some of my favorite games growing up die and fade. It will happen to this game soon enough. Because it is what it is and that's the way it should be.

The_Great_Purge
The_Great_Purge

@gamefreak215jd Yup including Battlefield. Remember Devil May Cry? It never reached a 5th game (oh yeah it's capcom, the next one might be on a next gen console, who knows).  And Yep Danny O'D is correct, AC hasn't been around too long (5 years) but already have 4 AC games out there. The fifth one is coming (ACIII) and another one for psvita (ACIII:Liberation). GTA also.

I mean you need to kill the franchise now as for not to tarnish it's name and solidify itself as a legendary game.

Create another game, another concept, another different title. I've seen enough. But I will still buy ACIII next year (on a discount, of course).

@SheerMadness84 Yeah, thats the one temptation with Revelations for me, though I'll probably just watch all the videos that Gamespot have handily posted and read a few Wikipedia articles...

@The_Great_PurgeAgreed, but that's not gonna happen soon, you know the "milking"part.AC3 looks very different from the previous games and is more interactive.

The_Great_Purge
The_Great_Purge

@gamefreak215jd No, I'm not saying you are. AC is a good game franchise (I think) though I'm not completely sold. I do like to try ACIII because of the time setting. Yes you are correct with the too many sequels, but as time goes by and Ubisoft follows the same path, you'll see "milking" comments every now and then. And remember, majority of sweet relationships turn sour as time goes by.

gamefreak215jd

@The_Great_Purge Dude Iam not being anti-BF but I'am saying that not all games are ruined because of too many sequels.People hate COD because it is the same thing over and over again, but BF isn't like that.Similarly I think the sequels of the AC series always have something new in them. And I don't think that the story is even that bad.Revelations is an exception though.
