E3 2014 Rumors

With this year's event just around the corner, we round up some of the hottest rumors.

by

E3 2014 is now just days away. We're expecting a bevy of announcements from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, as well as third-party publishers like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts, which alone plans to make six announcements at the show. It promises to be a busy week in Los Angeles, but there's already a considerable amount of buzz built up thanks to a slew of rumors about what we may see at the show.

We have rounded up some of these rumors and provided details below. We will continue to update this story as more rise to the surface, and please don't hesitate to ping us to share rumors directly. For more on E3, check out GameSpot's roundup of everything you need to know about this year's show.

Make-Your-Own Mario Game for 3DS.

Nintendo Enthusiast has obtained an image from Nintendo's booth on the E3 show floor that features an unannounced 3DS game called Mario Maker. Going off the picture alone, it looks like you'll be able to create your own levels in the Mushroom Kingdom. Sounds fun! But is it real? We'll find out next week.

NFC Figurines for Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo France said that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. is going to take advantage of the Wii U's NFC capabilities. Pair that with the confirmation by Nintendo of more figurine details at E3 and you don't have to stretch your imagination to put the two together. Will these miniatures involve unlockable characters? We'll find out during the E3 Nintendo Direct.

Grand Theft Auto V comes to Current-gen

We've been waiting a long time for GTA 5 to come to PC (at this point it's taken longer than the same port for GTA 4), but maybe part of the reason for the delay is that the game is also being optimized for current-gen consoles.

Rockstar has said that they plan on releasing an Xbox One/PS4 game this fiscal year. While that could be the recently renewed Agent, an update of one of the best-selling games of all time seems a little more likely at this point. But the bigger question: Will it be a timed exclusive for Sony or Microsoft?

Dance Central 4

While talking about the Xbox One price cut and removing Kinect from Xbox One with Microsoft's Yusuf Medhi, he casually said, "Certainly some gamers are Kinect-focused, say Kinect Sports Rivals, Dance Central." While it's possible that he was referring to an Xbox 360 version of the game or the franchise in general...but it's also possible he accidentally leaked an upcoming Dance Central reveal.

Neither Harmonix nor Microsoft responded to follow-ups about the game, but E3 may give a lot of gamers a reason to use their Kinect for more than voice commands.

More PlayStation 4 HD Remakes

A lot of rumors have leaked about current-gen remakes of the Halo games, but we've heard rumblings that Sony has their own HD reveals as well. We already know about The Last of Us for PS4 update, but you can expect a few more games to get a chance for more exposure. The most surprising rumor we've heard: some of the PS4 updates might come from the Vita.

New Mortal Kombat [CONFIRMED]

[UPDATE] As expected, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon revealed the next game in his fighting series: Mortal Kombat X. And just in case you're wondering he clarified that it's pronounced "ex."

[ORIGINAL] Ed Boon has been teasing an announcement for the past few weeks, and while that's set to fall on Monday (pre-E3), we're guessing that the inevitable Mortal Kombat reveal will also make a big splash at E3.

Big Third-Party Xbox One Exclusive

An reliable source has confirmed that Microsoft is going to have at least one "big" third-party exclusive reveal during their stage show. We don't know the exact game, but our source said the game is both something "unexpected" and "something people will be really excited about."

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Microsoft says the "journey" to Halo 5: Guardians (2015) will begin this year, but what could that mean? According to Engadget's sources, Microsoft is bundling Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4 in a special package for Xbox One called the Master Chief Collection. There's no word on whether nor not Halo 3: ODST or Halo: Reach would also be included. Those are not "core" installments in the series, so we wouldn't be surprised if they were left out.

Majora's Mask on 3DS

Maybe Nintendo is just playing with nostaligic fans' hearts, but Nintendo has made several references to the N64 classic over the years, including a Skull Kid cameo in Smash Bros. and decorative mask in Link Between Worlds.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Collection for PS4 and Xbox One

Earlier this month, Reddit user GTA678 posted an image of a "Modern Warfare Collection," which will reportedly bundle Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in a special package for PS4 and Xbox One. The games will all reportedly run in 1080p at 60fps, with new textures, lighting effects, and sounds. Rumor has it this bundle will launch November 25 and even contain exclusive content for this fall's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Battlefield Hardline [CONFIRMED]

That escalated quickly.

Battlefield Hardline isn't much of a rumor any longer, as Electronic Arts this week confirmed that the game is indeed real and developed by Dead Space creator Visceral Games in conjunction with DICE. The developer's VP took to Twitter today to say that a leaked trailer for the game is six months out of date, and we already have the official trailer from EA below. The game is slated for Oct. 21 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

Tune in and find out.

Project Beast for the PS4

Stemming from images posted on 4Chan and circulated on popular gaming forum NeoGAF, this is reportedly the working title for a new game from Demon's Souls and Dark Souls studio From Software in conjunction with Sony Japan. Demon's Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki--now president of From Software--worked on this year's Dark Souls II only in a supervising role; he focused most of his attention on an unannounced mystery game. Is Project Beast this game? We may not have to wait much longer to find out.

Here is hoping the Deep Down will turn out to be some sort of Dragon's Dogma 2.. if not.. we need next gen Dragon's Dogma 2!

Project Beast may be nice, only if it's on a brand new graphic engine. Souls engine is getting dated badly.

The fact it is a PS4 exclusive is very exciting!

With a possible The Last Guardian news - we are looking at 3 PS4 exclusive games with some great potential!

RemakeBox One and RehashStation 4. The current state of console gaming is pathetic.

Now instead of Activision making new CODs that are all the same, they're just re-releasing old ones.

The only interesting news here are about Project Beast.

I am excited about E3 since we finally going to meet with some new ps4 exclusives: Project Beast, Deep Down, probably The Last Guardian and more.

I'm well known on these forum for being fair and unbiased, but I gotta say I think Microsoft will have the best show. Nintendo will announce some classic franchises so I give them second place. I'm tying Ubisoft & EA for third because well, they're better than who I think will be last, Sony.

Happy E3 to all!

I think the announcement teaser for Dance Central 4 has just been leaked, I saw it on youtube and it said it was posted like yesterday or something.

I don't mind the delays to 2015, a lot of 'next-gen' launch games suffer from being rush to the market. Also games are being hurt by being cross-platform with last gen hardware. As time goes by and more development is focused on current hardware we'll actually see 'next-gen' games

jb34304
jb34304

@freedomzealot  Exactly. Let everyone play the games if it is possible on the new hardware. Ametuar game emulation running on PC's and even some cell phones, have come a long.way. Hardware manufactures for the game consoles reay literally have every tool in the box to work with. Wii Virtual Console sounds familiar, as well as Playstation 2 and 3 systems being built with the Emotion engine chip. A Playstation one technology that allows for those consoles to play Playstation one games via discs, and little to no emulation to deal with. It's a win-win. Game companies could just take customers money, unless they want to make customers fork over cash for fresh IP :( . In my personal opinion. A lot of the AAA stiff lately has been kinda lackluster at best... I enjoyed South Park Stick of Truth for the PC. Borderlands 2, and all the Season Packs/DLC. You know... The things that should be included in a $60 game. If you don't want to put it in there, make a separate game like they are now. They easily could of done that, but noooo.... Greedy bastards that take money before the actual thoughts of the customer (read about this later under the P.S. RANT). The Assassins Creed Black Flag for the PC was a great game actually. The South Park Stick of Truth of story was just as funny as it was short in the time it takes to complete the story of the game.

P.S. Here is the Greed Rant to the game publishers, and they better read this. And I hope the Gamespot admins do one of two things. Just leave it here, or take it to someone important in the company to read. Because I am sick of paying $60 for a AAA priced game than getting wooden nickeled and dimed into purchasing $5, 10, and $15 DLC with each game. Sometimes with the release date of the game! Load of crap. It is part of the game. They intentionally don't put it in the game to get more cash on the back end of a game release, if they feel sales are meeting/exceeding initial sales estimates.

What these gaming companies could use the coders  instead to make compatibility/efficiency patches. Speed up the game, and fix the errors of what felt like maybe twice a week. And it goes without saying that every developer knows that including a development kit when your game is instant GOLD to fill the impossible to overfill coffers of your corporation. So why say no? Really I'm dead serious here? Is it the whole trade secrets thing? I'm sure Unreal would be okay with it, because they can charge for the licence if someone uses it commercially. Otherwise its free to use anyways...

Corporations/ Game Developers are supposed to WORK FOR AND SERVE the CUSTOMER. Modern corporations do not understand this concept anymore, and wonder why customers complain why people say their customer service sucks. Easy observation right there... When customers go to purchase the newest digital copy of lets say "Borderlands 2", since it would be a good example. Customers just want the ONE  GAME WITH THE DLC INCLUDED FOR FREE. As if the DLC did not even appear to be DLC. Maybe if you want to make the content that "exclusive" you could introduce it after customers beat the game. This type of system could be introduced with nearly every type of game. Online games would be more difficult to find a "fair method", but they aren't trying hard enough :)

with the order 1886 delay I really hope uncharted gets released by the end of the year.  No more hd remakes please

If it is true about the Mario maker I would rather it be for Super Mario World or Super Mario U instead of the original.

@steelmouth With the Xbox style of exclusive it'll be another bland shooter. They don't know how to make any other style of game.

@Sevenizz It's impossible to call such a thing. Picking a side at this point is verging on biased to begin with. We could very well end up with a situation like last year where in my opinion, Microsoft won in their overall presentation but Sony came 'round the bend with their 2 months of breathing room and shat all over Microsoft's console plans.

All that happening made it hard to declare Microsoft any sort of winner.

EA might show some cool stuff.
I'm expecting some Mass Effect that may or may not murder the series, and obviously Inquisition.

Ubisoft I don't care for. Especially after Watch Dogs for PC.

Either way, why would you include them in the competition between Micro and Sony when EA and Ubi aren't really the same sort of conference.

constantterror

@Sevenizz lol how you figure everyone that actually has a brain knows Sony has the most exclusive devs and will def have alot of awesome games at E3 and its pretty pathetic to say you're being unbiased the way you're saying others in front of the top gaming system out there bottom line is this PS4 is gonna crush xbox one period they have better games they don't rely on pathetic halo and gears oh and the final nail xbox people only like fps so if it ain't fps it ain't gonna sell $hit oh and don't even try to say titanfall is good cause that's the biggest pos of a game I have ever seen its a mechassault copycat which is sad cause mechassault was good long time ago so EAT IT........

@jb34304 I think corporations relationship to the customer has always been one of how to extort the most profit, because of our race-to-the-bottom economic system. It just seems that in the last few decades, we've seen games go from being a "geek only" fringe hobby, where enjoyment and fantasy were the main objectives, to a mainstream way for businessmen to get rich.

The only way to stop it is to stop buying the products. This will not affect much, because the industry players get too big and too powerful - requiring en mass boycotting to have much effect. I think in all cases, abuse begins slowly and gradually ratchets up in intensity - they entice you with small things to get you hooked, then you don't care how much it hurts, because you want more of the drug.

@creepshow2  A combination of graphics Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 1 and 3 graphics could be cool. That way you could make all of the awesome power-ups from all 3 games!

Yeah I know... not quit le the next gen Dragon's Dogma I was expecting... hopefully we will see some fresh new footage, more impressive this time.

Do you know if it is still bpund to be F2P?? I rather pay 60$ for a full good game than a P2W...pay to win.

jb34304
jb34304

@Slagar @jb34304 The only form of "boycotting" that is occurring is creating the need elsewhere, by having independent developers create their own games. Any form of DLC (if any), is usually at no price. Just look at Goat Simulator. They knew in advance from their previous games (Scanctum 1 and 2) would be a huge mistake for them. Even though this game was supposed to be kind of a joke... I don't think a lot of people are going to remember that part.

Here is an article from the staff of Coffee Stain Studios. The makers Goat Simulator: http://indiegames.com/2014/04/goat_simulator_the_power_of_fr.html
