Donovan, Marquez join Rooney on NA FIFA 12 cover

US striker, Mexican center back to join Manchester United forward on American iteration of EA Sports' latest soccer sim.

Last week, EA Sports announced that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney would grace the cover of the North American iteration of FIFA 12 as one of three athletes. The publisher today announced the other two footballers, naming rivals Landon Donovan and Rafael Marquez FIFA 12's additional cover stars in North America.

From left: Rooney, Donovan, and Marquez.

Donovan is currently a striker for the LA Galaxy Major League Soccer team. Marquez also plays in the MLS, as a center back for the New York Red Bulls. Donovan and Marquez also play for the US and Mexican national teams, respectively.

While Donovan and Marquez are working together to help promote FIFA 12, tonight in Philadelphia the two will go head-to-head. The United States will look for retribution when the squad takes on Mexico at 6 p.m. PDT. The US squad has lost three straight matches against Mexico, including the Gold Cup final in June by a 4-2 margin.

@Driscoal I was referring to Europeans attitude towards the MLS

Rooney may be good at football, but he's one almighty cock I'd much prefer someone I actually like on the cover.. I mean look at him, he's roaring for Pete's sake :/ @CaptainHerlock The USA may spend the most on video games, but I seriously doubt FIFA sells anywhere near as many units in the US as it does in Europe.

You dumbos, the reason they are there is because they are selling the game to a NorthAmerican audience. The European version of Fifa 12 will have european stars and the south american may have messi.

i rekon it should be messi and ronaldo on the cover best players in the world and in the middle one of the best goal keepers

@packers91 Do you have 3 North American player with more influence than that "bunch of South Americans".??

Great strategy by EA for the north american cover .. But they could have put becham instead of Rooney because he's a huge star and he plays for LA Galaxy

@packers91 Right, because the NFL has no drama or primadonnas or players acting like rockstars?

@k4duty Because the United States spends the most money on video games in the entire world.

Have you seen Donovan ex wife? she's hot as hell!! you calling him gay but I wish I were him to have his girl... anyway I think he's a really good player, not the best but he does just fine! BTW, dont you think we should be more interested in the game itself instead of the cover issue? I hope all the stuff EA says about the improvement of the manager/career mode dont let us down, agaaaain!! Soccer is my second favorite sport (basketball's 1) and if you played 2k11, man, the franchise is so damn good that you actually feel you are the coach + owner of your team!! that's the kind of stuff I want in fifa 12

Ok first off no one should dis Rooney. He is a great play. One of the top 15 all time scorers in the English Premier league and he is only 25 and also one of the top 20 all time assisting players. And now Donovan deserves to be on there for the United States because dare I ask who else from the U.S. has represented the game so well! Who else has carried the United States soccer farther! now marquez... no a hecho nada mi chabo... (Marquez has not done enough lately in my opinion)

Left: Nasri - Center: Van Persie - Right: Walcott = a game i'd fkkin buy. Stoked for fifa 12 just not stoked to see gayboy Donovan staring back at me again... rooney is a good player with a horrible attitude. and marquez is an interesting choice. really should be rooney messi and gerrard or drogba/terry

European soccer needs more parity, the reason they're so snobbish about it all is because they have no idea what a salary cap is.

@ flaobina10 I'm pretty sure it's the cover for NORTH America. Why would they put a bunch of South American players on it? @alfkb24 Rooney is on all the covers, I guess they made him his posterboy despite 95% of the world not liking him.

Landon Donovan is there so Americans can feel proud of a second-class country in terms of soccer. Hope the new coach brings us to excellence

Should have been Donovan (To snare North America), Hernandez (Mexico and Manchester United) and Messi (Argentina and Barcelona). Surely that would have made the most commercial sense.

It must be difficult to select 3 players for the cover of any soccer game. There is so much talent out there now days.

in America should be Messi (Argentina) + Ronaldinho ( the return of the genius - Brazil) + Forlán(Uruguay) The top 3 forces of the American's soccer

Why have U.S players on the cover? I thought they were not very good players... Well how should I now, I don't watch american soccer just the European leagues:)

Marquez is old now but he's a good player, and icon in Mexico... but why dumb ass Rooney there? he's not that good! if EA aims America, I think another MLS player would be better! even another Mexican player like Chicharito would be much better! I wish we had something like this in South America: Neymar (Brazil) + Messi (Argentina) + Salomon Rondon (Venezuela) I'm Venezuelan so that's I choose a Venezuelan player =)

Of course it's a marketing thing. It's obviously done to make the game more relatable to the North American consumer. Okay, so neither Donovan or Marquez are especially noteworthy players when you look at international soccer, but I can understand where EA is coming from.

PseudoElite

Notice the cover is for "North America" where Donovan is from. He's one of the best players on the US squad and so it's only logical for him to promote the game in the United States, sheesh. It's marketing, not based necessarily on skill level.

The only one that is worth it is Rooney, Marquez and Donovan are old and they are not at they top level. Also they play in a mediocre league like MLS.

im glad they went with Marquez and not Chicharro

Marquez, in the cover, excellent, Rooney, pretty well...Donovan?? get him out of there!! come on!
