Rooney, Kaka named FIFA 12 global cover stars

Manchester United striker and Brazilian midfielder lead soccer sim packaging athletes; region-specific athletes named.

by

Last week, Electronic Arts reported revenues of $999 million for its latest quarter, helped in part by the continuing success of FIFA 11, which has sold a massive 15 million units through June. Now, the publisher is talking about FIFA 12, having announced global and region-specific cover athletes for the game.

Rooney doing what he does best.

For the first time ever, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will front the cover of the North American iteration of FIFA 12. Joining him on the cover will be two additional players that will be named in mid-August. The other global cover athlete for FIFA 12 is Brazilian attacking midfielder Kaka.

As is regular for the FIFA franchise, the cover athletes vary from region to region. The full global cover athlete roster is below.

FIFA 12 is due out in North America on September 27, followed by a worldwide bow on September 30. EA Sports has updated the franchise in FIFA 12 with a new Player Impact Engine, as well as new dribbling mechanics in an effort to deliver a more realistic touch on the ball.

Defense has likewise been tweaked, with a greater emphasis being placed on position play and ball interception. The publisher is also introducing the EA Sports Football Club feature, a free service that offers news and updates on the real-world sport.

EA Sports also said that it has updated the game's Career mode. With FIFA 12, players will be able to live out storylines taken from real-world events. Career mode also boasts more than 500 officially licensed clubs. For more on the upcoming title, check out GameSpot's latest preview of FIFA 12.

@JJnyg24 They already kind of do have that team, except it doesn't have pele or maradona as far as I know. It's called the World XI team. It was in the past game.

And for those who only see porto, Falcão and Hulk are not portuguese players, so, for me, they don't diserve to be in the portuguese cover.

I bet for Portugal it will be one of the best Portuguese players: Fábio Coentrão.

All I know is, the next World Cup game that takes place in Brazil better have the legendary Pele and Ronaldo(all time World Cup goal scorer) on the cover and as usable players. Better yet, FIFA 12 should feature a "Legends" team that lets you play as prime versions of Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo, etc., but not let you use this team for ranked online matches.

As a suggestion, the two leagues from Middle East (Iranian and Saudi League) could be very interesting being available in FIFA 12

So they find the ugliest little orge of a muppet who lacks any sort of decency or manners and a guy who practically spent the whole year injured to be on the cover. Smart move. /sarcasm

Wouldn't it be nice if you had Pele? Not just on the cover, but as a usable player :)

Why Steven Gerrad was never on the cover? Come on KaKa barely plays although I love the guy. The best cover would be Ronaldo and Messi looking at each other.

@EPaul If you are talking about "Hernandez" from Mexico, he can't be in the south american cover, geographically Mexico is in north America. Anyway, I just don't like those terms of North, Central or South, it just divides the continent. It should just be called "America". Like in every other place, we don't say "Latin Europe" or "Francafrica".

@naruto-fan55 Ronaldo sucks? you must eat crap for breakfast. Kaka is amazing, messi is fantastic... but Ronaldo is just the BEST

It's good to see someone different on there in the form of Jack Wilshire, but for the UK version, I would prefer to see the Player, and Young Player of the Year winners on the cover just to keep things fresh. So to give us a break from Rooney, how about Bale and Wilshere.

@naruto-fan55 Yes, I'm sure that Ronaldo sucks, one of the reasons why he scored more goals than any other football professional in one of Europe's main football leagues... On the other hand, I'm eager to see what my country's cover is going to be like, I would like to see Bosingwa on the cover...

I think they should put less "megastars" on the titles and more young talented players. NHL games seem to do this with some interesting selections every now and then and not just the biggest stars year after year. It's not actually like seeing Rooney on the cover would pursuade me to buy it. I hate Man U, and Kaka was last years cover star. Thats unrelated though, im just throwing up a point.

OK I know I will be flamed for this. But both FIFA and PES are still decades away from presenting a half-decent depiction of soccer.

Actually Rooney and Kaka were on the cover of fifa 11, the Ireland and uk version at least

I have no issues with Rooney. Even though he wasn't on the cover of Fifa 11 he was in all of their commericals. But Kaka is another story. I rather have them put Ronanldo, Drogba, or Tevez on the cover. Kaka was on it last year and its time to have a new face. Thats how I feel anyway.
