Doctor Doom Becomes the "Infamous Iron Man"

Bendis and Maleev are giving Doom a new wardrobe.

New costumes for comic book characters isn't a new concept. Neither is characters changing their names. Villains turning into heroes? That's been done several times as well. With decades-old characters, sometimes the status quo needs to be shaken up.

Big changes are headed in Tony Stark's direction. Marvel has been tight-lipped about the future status of the Avenger. Back in July, it was reported that a 15-year-old girl is taking Iron Man's place. It was later revealed Riri Williams will go by the name Ironheart instead of Iron Man. The villain formerly known as Doctor Doom is also trading in his traditional metal armor and green cloak for something closer to Stark's look in a new comic called Infamous Iron Man.

This isn't simply a matter of a villain trying to take on a new identity. At the conclusion of last year's Secret Wars story arc, the Marvel Universe saw minor changes. One development within the pages of Invincible Iron Man was the appearance of Doctor Doom. The former Fantastic Four villain no longer had a scarred face and appeared to want to help out Tony Stark. Stark accepted his help while being extremely skeptical.

In October, the Eisner Award-winning team of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev reunite for Infamous Iron Man. We'll have to wait to find out what happened to Stark. The Marvel Universe will have to keep a close eye on Doom to see if he really has turned over a new leaf. Perhaps this is just another one of his dastardly plans.

Infamous Iron Man #1 is on sale October 19.
