Defiance renewed for second season

SyFy orders 13 additional episodes to air in 2014; game adding five new DLC packs.

SyFy has renewed postapocalyptic alien TV show Defiance for a second season. Thirteen additional episodes have been ordered and will air in 2014.

The news comes just four episodes into the show's record-breaking first season.

Not only will Defiance the TV show live on, but the game is also set to grow. Developer Trion Worlds announced this week that five downloadable content updates are coming to the game in 2013, the first of which will introduce the Castithan species.

This $10 update will allow gamers to play as the Castithan species and will unlock a new story mission line and a new Battle Arena game mode. The update also brings a new four-player "truck of doom," as well as new pursuits and a Charge Weapons starter pack.

New Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 achievements and trophies are also up for grabs in the content. For a full rundown of content and features included with the Castithan expansion, check out the post on the game's website.

Gamers who don't wish to pay $10 for the Castithan expansion will still receive new content via an update. It will add access to a new open-world game mode called Sieges, as well as a player-versus-player map titled Military Academy, among other things. Check out the full post for more.

Defiance launched in April and has seen over 1 million registrations to date.

Am i the only one that feels we got burnt from this series? I was expecting something similar to that of the live action trailer they produced (which was awesome btw) or maybe that ark hunter chronicles story. The show is very corny and most of the characters and end music for each episode seems out of place and lack character depth and interest. Hope the producers and writers  take a lot of fan feed back for season 2.

Have no fear Trion is here!!!! I trust in Trion to throw fast updates at this game like they do in Rift!!!

Loving the show at the moment.. Its good to have a new sci-fi show to get into. Probally one of the better shows to come out of the sci-fi channel..

I picked up the game very cheap on the PC and its average.. nothing special but its nice to get a bit more lore in the universe on the TV series. I can only play for like 30 mins before getting untterly bored of doing the crappy missions.. go here kill those, collect that yadda yadda.. combat mechanics are very basic as well its basically stand still shoot everything until your shield starts to make a noise.. go for cover wait for it ro recover then start shooting again and thats it.. Still like i said its nice to get more lore on the show and it does pass the time.

The show itself is pretty mediocre but I really enjoy the game. It has charm to it, I dont know how long it will hold my attention but it was definitely worth the money I paid for it.

I've watched every episode of this show so far, and it flat out SUCKS! The effects are ok, but the characters and plot and acting are all pretty aweful. Bring back Firefly. Or Battlestar Galactica, or Stargate, or Star Trek. Or create something at least semi-decent. Or put a little effort into Defiance.  Sorry, it's terrible.  I love the game/show idea, but it's just poorly executed.

I watched the pilot and I can say this series is pretty rough on the quality.. they need to do a lot of work to make this show viable.

Loving these comments where people watched 10min of the pilot and made an evaluation of the show. lol

Haven't watched any...

I think the game is pretty decent for a free to play open world shooter/rpg. I find the tv show to be better than the game. Idk why everyone thinks the characters are so bland. I love the concept of the series.

Is it me, or does the red-headed alien chick look like Joanna Dark in Perfect Dark Zero?

Received the Defiance game as a gift. Played it for a few hours and thought it was really fun. Then after a few Arkfall's and monotonous questing, things started getting boring. Driving over purple flowery hills, hearing the same AI voice over and over and over and over drove me insane. Running for scrounge for ammo every 15 seconds, I lost hope. Currently I am recovering, swimming in a lava pool to burn off the stench of boredom.

Show seems average to below average so far. It only was renewed because theres a game attached to it imo. They had to give at least a 2nd season to try and keep the game alive as well. Would have been really bad for it to have been cancelled so soon to the games release.

I feel like the show would have been much more interesting if it was about the 40 years prior. I would much rather see when the aliens arrived and the war that ensued. I think they crammed too much into the shows pilot and they should do more with character development. So far I really have no investment in any of the characters. I hope the show gets better as it goes along.

As for the game, because of the mixed reviews, I am waiting for it to go on sale before I get it.

I thought the game was pretty mediocre, but I didn't play it much- it seems like most of the IGN critics had a similar reaction at first, but it grew on them after time, so maybe my assessment is unfair.

The show seems like a pretty typical sy-fi production.  I kinda think the show was made specifically to give all the rejects on "Face-Off" a job :/

I wish they never signed it for another season just wasted space, such a useless TV show..... They are trying way to hard.... introducing 50 characters in the first episode makes it very hard to watch or even care about the story....

I can't play this game because I can't go online with my console. No cash for you Defiance.

I'm loving the show, so this is great news! Even better because I've been on the fence over the game, but if it will be supported into next year then I may be sold.

I own the game and have done from day one. It has a few problems but there not game breaking. This game is loads of fun and will keep you coming back for more its a console mmo and new content is always being added which for £45.00 is well worth the money. There is no sub for this game. You can unlock everything in this game for FREE there is a store but buying things early will not I repeat will not give you the advantage overe other players. For me buying early is stupid your not making the most out of the game ok so u have to grind to get your stuff but its a fun grind. And please tell me a game you don't have to grind on to unlock better things. So people if your in any doubt about getting this game go get it you won't be disappointed.

not a bad game for a shooter/mmo hybrid not my kind of game though.

After all the money scifi dropped into this before it even launched , I should hope so, it the show and game failed, they would of shot the selves.

They show is good, I dont think it will last as long as say Stargate:SG1 Infact none of there shows have ever come close to lasting that long not even the spin offs. Cant comment on the game as. as its another shooter type game and I hate them

Gamespot is making it sound like the five DLC packs were just announced only now, when Defiance had already announced them via a season pack at the game's release. this article has nothing ot do with the game at all newswise.

@cloud75x I watched every episode to this date and I can also say that the show is pretty mediocre. Story is weak, characters are bland and cheesy, effects are flat out terrible and cheap. The game on the other hand is pretty fun.

@soulfulDAGGER My ego rating is only 200 but I like the game but I don't know how long it will hold my attention. But I think they did a pretty good job with alot of the mechanics and hopefully the game gets updated

JRLennis

@Gen007 I think the renewal has less to do with the game tie-in and more to do with the enormous marketing push Sy Fy made in the months before the first airing.  The show is still new enough that the marketing rush hasn't had a chance to die down, but when mid-season hits and people see the quality not improving, the viewership will melt away.

Seriously, I don't understand what Sy Fy was thinking renewing a show based on numbers that were obviously inflated by their own marketing.  Four weeks is not nearly enough time to judge a show's long-term appeal to its audience.  As a general rule, a TV show's ratings always dip a few weeks into it's initial run as viewers decide a given show is not for them.  A network cannot responsibly judge the impact of their show until the inevitable decline levels out to its core audience - the people invested enough to stay onboard for the long-term.  If that audience is large, you renew the show.  If it isn't, you can it.  There is simply no way Sy Fy can know Defiance is a hit at this early juncture.  They're gambling that their target demographic will stay invested regardless of the show's quality, and this is a big mistake.

@Gen007 ya the concept has a lot of potential so far the story arcs have been pretty bland.  its hard to actually sit thru an entire episode.

JRLennis
JRLennis

@ccanfield1 Absolutely the show would be more interesting if it took place during the war.  The problem is that it would be a lot more expensive to make.  This was meant from the outset to be cheap entertainment, not the next Stargate.  Remember that Sy Fy passed on Blood and Chrome.

@monstachruck lol That's what i felt. The Face-off rejects that is. Those white skinned bald aliens with engraved scales are what had me say "What is this? A Face-off  throw away?" right when i saw it. I thought the pilot was good but didn't even go back to watch the rest.

JuggaloZero
JuggaloZero

@tankbrain 50 characters? Holy exaggeration, Batman! The show is most definitely flawed, but  having too many main characters isn't one of those problems. Seriously, two primary characters with at most 8 "main characters" total... what overly simplistic Nick/Disney Jr. shows have you been watching lately that you got lost so easily?

Marshydude1

@tsunami2311 Stargate: SG1 lasted for ten seasons, half of them on the old Sci-Fi network.  It was one of the longest running shows in TV history.

Apathy4Marmite

@BillyColeman Aye, I enjoyed it for 30+ hours despite it's flaws, but the nail in the coffin for me is the fact that half the synergies for the mod slots don't even exist.

I'm hoping I'll be able to pick this up again somewhere down the line when all of the major problems have been ironed out.

Iezis

@Prats1993 idk I kind of like it. It isn't Game of Thrones, but I might keep watching it. I defiantly like the concept. The first episodes have been kind of messy, but maybe once they get further into the main plot, it will get better. often the first episodes of good shows are kind of awkward.

guitarist1980
guitarist1980

@grokh @TerminalError It could be good but there moving plots to fast and furious there jumping from 1 thing to the next with little build up. At least thats my opinion of the show. Its ok. But I like the game.

Apathy4Marmite
Apathy4Marmite

@Iezis @Prats1993 The first episode was handled really badly, what with the whole cyborg invasion thing being a minor inconvenience in our teenage romantic drama.

... And don't even get me started on where GoT is going!

That being said I am still watching Defiance, but I'm hoping that the plot really picks itself up by the end of this season.

Apathy4Marmite
Apathy4Marmite

@Devil_wings00 @Apathy4Marmite @Iezis @Prats1993 Nope, because I love the books. I also enjoy the TV series but some of the so-called 'fudging around' is pretty bad.

I understand that they have to try and cram a whole book into ten hours of screen time and I'm all for a bit of fudging around, but plenty of George RR Martin's interesting characters have been cut to save time and money and some of the show's differing story lines are fairly sub-par.
