Defiance hits 1 million registrations

Trion Worlds reveals new player figure for open-world transmedia shooter since launch last month.

by

Open-world massively multiplayer online shooter Defiance has netted one million registered players, developer Trion Worlds has announced. The milestone comes one month after the game launched for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on April 2.

Trion Worlds also shared a number of in-game achievements, saying Defiance players have killed more than 500,000,000 hellbugs to date. In addition, players have driven 50,000,000 miles in the game and battled one million Arkfalls.

Defiance is a transmedia effort from Trion Worlds and TV network SyFy. The show of the same name broke records at the network, netting 2.7 million viewers for its debut episode. The premiere was SyFy's most-watched scripted series debut for adults in seven years.

"The premiere was SyFy's most-watched scripted series debut for adults in seven years.", that means i'll probably get cancelled since SyFy cancells every show with good ratings, and when that happens all support for the game will go with it. On a serious note, I wish they had some kind of free weekend things, I really don't like having to buy the game, or to be more specific having to buy an MMO, to then not like it, if I could at least get some free hours, even If after it I'm locked out until I buy the game that would at least give me a chance to see if it's any good or not.

Needs more content, plus the world should be expanded....it's too small for an MMO, I completed the story, most pursuits and all dungeons, arkfalls are only fun so many times then they get boring...played since release but haven't had any interest to log back in since a week ago, there's nothing to do.  I don't like the PvP in that game, feels glitchy and trion won't fix the hacking going on.

The only reason I'm playing this game that I love mmos, I wish that developers will start thinking of creating more serious mmos and especially rpgs for consoles after this secssisful luanch of defiance (Take the hint Bethesda).

I want to get this game but so many mixed signals. Have only one friend on the xbox playing it and I can never get him when I send him a message.. which console is it better on the ps3 or the xbox 360...started playing dust 514 and that game the beta even though the game it self comes out I believe may 17th has really picked up....sorry xbox people ....ps3 only

I got my money's worth, but I don't think this game is 1 million registrations worthy tbh. It has potential, but so do a lot of games. The most important number is how many of them play the game still.

I started watching the show and I like it. I definitely want to play the game now, even though it has been getting mixed reviews. I'll try it out once I can get a cheap sealed copy of the game. I'm not paying $60 for it, that's for sure.

OK considering it's on consoles as well compared to other MMOs only on PC.

Will probably die fast if it's anything like the show - Going from pretty good and interesting to garbage in the span of a week...

Game is alright, but honestly the "ark falls" are the worst part of the game to me.  Actually the whole thing should have been more like a 4 or more player co-op game because the MMO stuff is just distracting.  Framerate dies because morons are driving cars all over the place and wondering why they aren't dropping any loot or getting xp for the kills.

While the game is a bit repetitive, there's alot of potential here. It'll be interesting to see how the game develops once the devs start bringing more variety to things. I've heard rumors that while the game is set in the bay area right now it won't necessarily STAY there permanently  and I for one am hoping we'll get to see places like the Storm Divide, the Canadian Desert, and the massive Quarantine zone that covers what used to be Florida.

I'm enjoying the game, enjoying the show, and looking forward to seeing how the two will evolve and link together.  They just announced the first competition to get your character's likeness into the show - the competition has started now and runs til 12th May

If you are already playing you need to go to this link officially enter your account into the competition, then complete the 2 pursuits in-game:

I'm enjoying this game more than I thought I would, I just avoid playing it for insanely long stretches as I tend to do with MMO's.

This game was a hell of alot of fun when I first played it and then after 2 or 3 weeks it just got boring as hell. The show is is really good, but the game not so much. There just isn't enough substance in the game.

HEY MOM!!! Look I killed a Hellbug!
Hey Mom! Look I killed another Hellbug!
Hey Mom. I killed another Hellbug.
Hey Mom, I... umm nevermind.

That was like my excitement for this game for the first day, then the first week, then the second week, and then then third week.

"players have killed more than 500,000,000 hellbugs to date. In addition, players have driven 50,000,000 miles in the game". 10 hellbugs per mile driven, eh? I guess your mileage may vary, lol.

The game is fun and the show is good, can't ask for much more. Although I do think they can, and will make drastic improvements to the game.

It's fun but there is definitely room for improvement. They should rename the game ambush. You know once you collect that data the hellbugs or raiders are coming.

This game is boring as hell but, there aren't that many MMOs on the ps3, so it's a lesser of two evils.

I bought it for the PC, but really regretting my purchase.  I even got the digital deluxe edition.  I should have spent that money on a few indie games I want to buy.

I'm enjoying the show. Sure, some of the sub-themes are cliche (cross-species love! this species' ways seem barbaric to this other specie!) but it's better than a lot of other crap on TV lately. Was waiting for my semester to end before checking out the game. Guess I'll go rent it now.

I have been playing this game since release (well Beta actually). The Gamespot review pretty well nails it. There is lots of little things that make you roll your eyes, but it has this magnetic charm that keeps bringing you back. The co-op play is fun, very fun. Even solo is enjoyable. But roll with 4 or so mates, and you'll have a blast cruising from one event, mission, race and etc. You'll often be driving along and see another group of players mid quest, its great fun to jump out of your roller and give them a hand. Its a MMO that puts fun as its priority. You can share loot, there is not binding to your character. Gives you a car within the first few levels. The pursuit system is too bloody addictive. You're always trying to get that little bit extra. Introduce friends into the mix, and you get a bit of friendly competitiveness happening, to see who can stay on top with their Ego (level) rating. The most recent big patch, and a couple of smaller ones afterward, have fixed a lot the initial big problems.

Im enjoying the game far more than I am the show :P

Will the game last the years like WoW and etc? No. But will it provide fun and entertainment for the not too distant future? Yes, I believe it will.

Defiance is fun. Perfect? No. But it makes a refreshing change from the current super generic, been there done that, fantasy MMOs we have now.

Did not see any of that coming. Expect EA, Activision to start their own shows, games soon. Although, EA will probably charge you to watch its episodes on Amazon or something. No, wait, Origin.

I have some friends who are in that thing all the time. Most of the world events tend to be quite packed...

I tried to like the show but wow the writing is terrible at times. Every time it looks like it might be interesting some poorly written cliché flops into the plot and is unfortunately a large part of it. Not to mention they reached for the stars with the CGI. Way to much and far to low in quality.

@k0k066 It doesn't have a sub fee, though, its just like guild wars where you buy the game play free forever, and buy expansions when they are released.

@k0k066

i don't know that much about how free to play works on PC, but it seems like they'd have to do some major tweaking to actually give people a reason to buy anything in the game. i had some amazon credit, so at the end of the day i only paid $35 for it and i'm happy with it for that price. i had some MS points left in my account, so i was going to buy some stuff from their store, but you can only buy it with bits and you can only get bits with at least 400 MS points, then that gives you 400 bits and you can spend 1600 ms points and i think you get 1800 bits and 4000 ms points will get you 5200 bits, and the stuff is a little too expensive, in my opinion. i did feel like buying my character an outfit, but some of the outfits can cost like 980 bits which is more than 10 bucks. then some headgear is at least $5. i think they need to get the prices of some of this stuff down enough to actually compel people to buy it. i have 380 ms points that i'm probably not going to ever do crap with, so that's almost $5 that i'd be willing to throw their way... but the way their system is set up, it's not so good for impulse buys... and there's nothing that you really feel like you *have* to have anyway. i do think they did a pretty good job with it though considering the game costs you $60 and most of what you can buy isn't necessary. you'll find enough good guns, you'll eventually get enough inventory slots and you earn enough XP and stuff without feeling like you're ever really too limited and forced toward buying anything.

@don_saulari Yeah MMOs have a lot of untapped potential. The only consoles MMOs are stuff life FFXI, FFXIV, Defiance, and Phantasy Star Online, etc. While games like WoW would not work really well on consoles, Console developers could do stuff like Planetside and Firefall that don't require all of the complex controls of an MMORPG. However, the Wii U has also opened up potential for more complex gameplay with its tablet controller.

@---Cipher--- I tried the game on both region one and region 2 account, sadly there is barely any players in region 2, I only see them at arkfalls, yet at region 1 you cant go 1 mile without seeing other player walking around, fighting, doing the same quest as you.

Link3301
Link3301

@stailcookie Its an MMO on consoles with no sub fee, that should be enough to generate interest in the game until more compelling MMOs come to the console market. I know the GW2 is  supposed to come to consoles and the new FFXIV is looking pretty good, as well. I'm not suggesting that it will just be killed, but the game doesn't seem to be that good and will probably have to struggle to keep its users.

@leviathanwing @don_saulari At least you can play an mmo after the first 5 hours as well. Those that are not mmos can be finished in some where around 5-10 hours. You pay for mmos on a monthly basis but you actually can play them after months.

@EL_Bomberdor @Ryuuken27

the same can be said of almost any game, though, player. a good game needs to be able to stand on its own two feet.

that being said, i don't find it terribly boring. none of my friends have it, but i have played in groups and that's fun... playing the missions in the regular game (usually alone) is reasonably fun, too.

slefo29

@DrizztDark Yes, you're right. But what I was trying to say was EA would likely make you pay more somehow and have you install Origin, because, you know, it's the greatest game client on the market. ::sarcasm:: =D
