Unlikely to win new fans, but most will be pleased

Known as "Dragon Tiger Fist" in Japan, Art of Fighting (there is no definitive article in the title) at first might seem a bland one-on-one fighting game, but it actually shares a universe with the popular Fatal Fury series, and is set in that game's fictional location of South Town.

Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia (who is drawn to look like a cross between Van Damme and Seagal) are the only two playable characters, which is a bit naff, and are out to find Ryo's kidnapped sister Yuri, fighting their way through a bunch of typically cartoonish thugs. It's a bit more story-driven, echoing the progression of Fatal Fury, and it was a really difficult coin gobbler in the arcade. The graphical power of the arcade ports okay to the Mega Drive, with noticeable, but not major compromises and the controls spread over six buttons instead of just three. It's nowhere near as popular as other fighters but certainly worth a playthrough and a nice cousin to Fatal Fury if you're a fan of those games. Characters featured in this game would go on to appear in future Fatal Fury entries and in the King of Fighters series as well as Capcom vs SNK. Two arcade sequels followed, none made it to the Mega Drive.

A soundtrack album was released as well as a vinyl, and an arranged soundtrack. European editions of the Mega Drive versions are very hard to come by, so you'll probably have an easier time tracking down the Japanese edition. Hardcore fans will likely hunt down the Neo Geo version, but it too is very rare.
