Could be higher with a few changes

User Rating: 8 | Alien: Isolation PS4

To encourage exploration of the ship and cut back on the often tedious trial and error gameplay, developers could either a) add more save points b) provide more tools - other than the flamethrower (effective) and Molotov (ineffective) - to repel the alien. I really wanted to explore the ship, but after getting killed for the 7th time, I would just cut my losses and disappointingly opt for the most direct root. Also, there were a few instances where the "hand of the developers" intervened to make the game more difficult. Once, they removed a key save point, another time I had to hand over all my weapons before entering an area only to have them magically returned to me once through the area. These felt very contrived and took me out of the game. Other than this, I disagree with the reviewer. Yes, there is backtracking, but each time you backtrack you have new tools and upgrades to new unlock areas and shortcuts. Also, it's a beautiful looking game and the story and atmosphere made it more than compelling enough for me to finish it.
