Visually addictive, flashy and ambitious

Age of Empires online, a distinguished name with a lot of hype and a lot of history, lets face it however its been quite some time since the last title and to be honest a cartoon version pushes it for the average fan of the series. While most can say they've been dying for a back to the roots RTS many are saying the exact opposite and with even deeper anguish as not only did the game take a flip in graphics to become Jimmy Neutron stylistically but it also became an RPG. Lets cut to the jist of the game though, It's fun, exciting and by all means a time killer.

Using the free to play system, you start out by picking one of 2 civilizations(excludes the recent addition of Celt civ) which include the Greeks and the Egyptians. From there on out you are put in charge of a small city for which you can create and expand by leveling up, obtaining new buildings and progressing through a rewarding system of quests and farming. The overall quests are entertaining to say the least and the maps and difficulty add onto the challenge. The rewards given from these quests range from green (uncommon) items to blue (rare), Purple (epic), and Orange (legendary) quality and provide a further incentive to spend countless hours in mastering strategy.

Game play for Age of Empires Online however is a similar story to that of any RTS. Pledged to fight or die you have to gather resources, stone, gold, wood, and food as you normally would and build up your base, and army to annihilate the AI in a selectively Co-op series of quests. Allowed to travel from parts of each country where the civilizations originate you in the sense get a bit of the RPG element you like to experience when you dominate the tyrant.

Starting off may seem like a drag but as you level up and open new opportunities to not only level but to play other players the fun starts to add up. One of the awkward parts about the player cap however is that it is the low and awkwardly boring number 4... Yes 4, no more no less. This hypothetically brings down the scope of the fun anyone might have but none the less I assure you it doesn't succeed.

For those looking to skip the PVE atmosphere Age of Empires online seeks to expand on players are allowed to pursue the PVP ladder and attempt to become the masters of PVP, albeit basic it does exist and offers items through wins and through the collection of countless types of currency which like PVE which rewards similar tokens, can be obtained by winning against other players.

Age of Empires Online, is a creative and ambitious title that attempts and succeeds for the most part in furthering the Age of Empires series where the last title left a gap.
