Aside from being a video critic, I like to think I'm a movie critic as well and once I saw the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I was not too impressed or blown away by it. It was what I thought it would be, a prequel. Nothing I already didn't know, and nothing I didn't press to be extremely accurate considering I was not one of those X-Men fan boys growing up. All that aside I still decided to rent the video game based on the movie after I had played what seemed to be a very graphic demo. You play as Wolverine and the game basically reenacts the movie only in certain parts. Once you start the campaign you see Wolverine in the future fighting his way in a bloody, gorey and graphic path from soldiers. The world Wolverine lives in is in shambles but this glimpse of the future at the begining is all what it is; a glimpse. Once that cinematic is over, and trust me its very beautiful in terms of graphics, you flash back to Wolverines Africa days with Col. William Striker, Victor Creed, Rafe and Raven Stockholm. You fight your way through the african country side reliving random missions that were not originally in the film. Once you complete one mission, you flash forward to three years later where Wolverine confronts his brother Victor as they duke it out in a barrom brawl. This game does it alot. Once you beat one mission you'll find yourself bouncing back and forth between 3 years back in Africa and 3 years forward to present day.

Wolverines powers are alot of fun to control. As time goes on, Wolverine builds up his powers by progressing in levels. Like a Pokemon! Each time he ascends one level he unlocks a power. He can do everything from Spin Claw, Claw Cyclone, Drill Claws and rage, which makes his attacks twice as strong. The boss fights however are rather repetative. Enemies you think will only appear once, will appear everytime you close in on the main boss. For example, some sort of Rocky golem looking monster appears alot in Africa and is a pain to fight and not necessarily a challenge if you can anticipate its attacks. Besides the big enemies that take forever to beat, there are other many variations of enemies you will encounter along the way depending on which envirnoment you are playing in. The boss fights are only between Gambit, The Blob, a Giant Sentinel (robots invented by a top secret research facility to anihilate mutants) Victor Creed (twice) and Deadpool. Wolverines health seems infintie due to his regeneration powers, but he really isn't. Take enough damage when you're in a weak state and Wolverine will be dead before you know. Shocking, I know.

One of the most anoying features in this game were the camera controls. Camera angles are beyond bad and make boss fights really aggrevating. At times there were points where the camera refused to zoom in on wolverine and I was fighting a golem rock monster from what seemed to be 100 miles away and in an odd angle at that. Aside from the worst aspect of the game being the camera controls, the combat, graphics and overall gameply will satisfy anyone who needs a quick video game fix....for 10 hours. The game is incredibly short, and what would you expect, its based on a movie. But unlike most games based on a movie, this one is actually exceptional. However, since the game is too short, you will definitely want to rent instead of ay the 60$. This game isn't worth buying given its length of gameplay. I finished it in a day and a half, and I did so between a 12 hour work shift. Beautiful graphics in cutscenes, satsifying combat, gameplay and lots and lots and lots of blood make this game worth playing, but again, rent, don't buy. It's definitely worth a 17$ rental.
