Seriously Addictive, seriously frustrating!

User Rating: 8 | Within a Deep Forest PC
When I say seriously addictive that can be either a good or a bad thing. Within a deep forest is an interesting and very different game, but it can be very, very frustrating.

The game is about a bouncing ball bouncing about in a world of minimalistic graphics. You must use the ball to complete a variety of mostly imaginative and well thought out puzzles. You start off with a basic ball that is coloured blue, but as you progress in the game you will accuire additional ball materials, all of which give the ball different characteristics. Some are more bouncy or quicker than others, and some have special attributes like the glass ball, which can pass through lasers unharmed. Collecting these balls is the key to beating the game, because you will need them all in order to get past the final level.

The game uses a checkpoint respawn mechanic. When you touch a "warp point" then it is activated, and if you die you will respawn at that warp point. This works well for the most part, but it can be irritating when you are forced to complete a long string of annoyingly difficult jumping puzzles in succession before you reach the save point. In some cases it will be very much down to how lucky you are and you will probably find yourself warping to certain places 20 times or more.

This game has a certain thing about it which I can't quite explain. On most games, if you get stuck in a certain area, you'll probably quit and try again tomorrow after the 10th quickload. This game however, hangs on to you like something else. It can become so frustrating that you are hating every minute of it but it's still near impossible to put down; you just have to finish it!

On beating the game, it felt like an achievement, yet now that I have finished the game I have absolutely no desire to go back and do it again. The puzzles were the main appeal of this game and after you've worked all of them out, all that is left is a whole bevy of jumping manouvers.

All in all though, this is a great little game, especially considering was made by a casual developer. The art style is fitting, the gameplay is skillful and the game as a whole works very well.
