User Rating: 9.2 | Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution PS2
Lets be serious for a second - the game only costs $20 ($30 for Canadians.) And you already know its a great game. Evolution is an improved version of Virtual Fighter 4; already its the most in-depth fighter on the market. Do you really need to read a review to realize that you have to get it? In case you do... Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution takes the most advanced fighter and for the most part, makes it better. The only thing missing is the ability to train an AI character, but is it really a big deal? Every character from the last game returns, with some slight tweaks here and there. The two new characters, Brad and Goh, are meant more for advanced players but that doesn't stop them from being totally cool additions to the roster. The game is advanced. Very advanced. The movelists are long. Long considering how the game only utilizes three actual buttons. (Other buttons on the PS2 controller are used to simulate pressing any combination of these buttons simultaneously.) The game can be very intimitating for a newcomer, but the Training mode does a great job of breaking the ice. Besides the stock Arcade and Versus mode, the game comes with World Tour mode. This alone makes Evolution worth getting regardless of whether or not you own VF4. Basically, you go from arcade to arcade in Japan, fighting off against AI characters based on actual players who played the Arcade game. Along the way, you must accomplish certain challenges (like beating a set number of people, though at later arcades, the challenges will vary) to earn the right to enter the tournament. Winning this lets you move on to other arcades. Along the way, you'll rise in rank just like in VF4. And you'll often get medals for your wins. And you can win accessories (or money to buy some) to dress up your fighter to your heart's content. You can unlock plenty of goods as well, including various wallpaper backgrounds for the main menu. Included with the game is 10th Anniversary mode, which lets you play VF4 with the graphics and sound of the original. Nice touch. And it only costs $20. The most advanced fighter on the market costs a mere $20. Why did you need to read this review in the first place? Go get the game!
