VF is one of the first 3D fighting games and over the years has racked up many acclaims from critics and fans alike. VF 4 Evo is a great success, however it has its fault as well. Brad Burns and Goh Hinogami join the regular cast of VF4 in this battle royale. All of the character designs lack a certain flair that's missing from some of the other fighting games like Tekken or SC. However, the details on the characters are amazing, as muscles flex and bend in reaction to every hit. Places like the Beach provides some scenery while you fight, but overall they're very drab and blend. Nothing like the awe inspiring stages of SC II, but the backgrounds are nice. The mechanics of this game is hard to master, but it offers the depth of a vast array of moves and counters, which is a very good thing. So be prepared to spend alot of times in Practice mode. After awhile, you'll be able to pull off some moves with flair. Other moves, you'll need to invest in alot of time to pull them off correctly. If you get tired of practicing, take your skills to the streets in Arcade mode and test it against CPU controlled opponents like Kage, Akira, etc. After beating the game several times, you can always take up your quest to become the best in Quest mode, where you fight the AI of top Japanese VF players. Going through the rank of Dans will be tough so be prepared to spend alot of time on your techniques. You'll be throughly rewarded with gold and secret items, which are used to customize your characters. This is one of the best part about VF 4 Evo, well done Sega. Pai kicked your ass too many times? Watch some top gameplay videos and you'll learn how to counter her sweep kicks and punish her with extreme prejudice. So pay attention, grasshopper. VF 4 Evo is a shiny example of a great fighting game. However, the lack of scenery or character design takes away some of the polish away from the game. But for a solid 20 dollars, there's few other games that I'd recommend more than this game.
