September is nearly here, which means fall is right around the corner. But as sad as it is to wave goodbye to summer, Netflix has a ton of cool programming to check out this month. As ever there's plenty of great original material, with new comedy, animation, and drama series, plus some great reality content. Here are the best movies and shows to check out this month, or check out the full list of new arrivals on Netflix.
In 2016, Zach Galifianakis stated that his hilarious interview show Between Two Ferns had essentially run its course--thankfully, Galifianakis is back this month with a new incarnation of the show--Between Two Ferns: The Movie. It uses a mockumentary format and follows Galifianakis as he attempts to restore his "reputation" after being mercilessly mocked online for his hapless interview styles.
Another new must-watch release is The Politician. It's the latest show from American Horror Story and Glee creator Ryan Murphy and stars Ben Platt as a rising politician named Payton Hobart. Each season is set to focus on a different political contest, with Season 1 following Payton while still in high school as he sets about trying to become student body president.
In terms of returning shows, Matt Groening's Disenchantment is back for the second half of Season 1. It's an animated, typically irreverent take on the fantasy genre that stars Broad City star and co-creator Abbi Jacobson as Bean, a rebellious and hard-drinking princess, who makes trouble in the kingdom of Dreamland with her optimistic elf pal Elfo and destructive "personal demon" Luci. Season 1 was met by mixed reviews, but with 10 new episodes due this month and a full second season expected in 2020, Netflix is clearly happy with audience reaction so far.
Finally, for those wanting a break from fictional stories, there are some reality shows to check out. The latest season of the much-loved Japanese series Terrace House, titled Tokyo 2019-2020, finally arrives. Long-time fans know what to expect, but it doesn't stop each season being as fascinating, engrossing, and emotional as the last. Finally, the ever-busy actor/director/producer Jon Favreau (The Lion King, The Mandalorian) is back with his celebrity cooking series The Chef Show, which includes the viral moment in which his Spider-Man: Homecoming co-star Gwyneth Paltrow has no recollection of appearing in the movie with him.
