I would say that The Vanishing of Ethan Carter ranks pretty high on the list. That ending really feels like a punch in the stomach.

If we're talking movies I just have one thing to say, Grave of the Fireflies. Can't watch it without bawling like a little girl.

Most people never heard of, but Visual Novels normally have great (and depressing) stories. I could easily swap 2 or 3 in this list.

@reza_razor: Hasn't she talked about playing that game several times? I wonder if it doesn't have the same impact as other games because it has more gameplay so to speak, and it's sort of a management game. If you think about all the arguments that come up about games with little or no gameplay, it seems like less interaction does get a more emotional response from most people in the press. Maybe that frees the game to focus more on emotional impact?

Of course that's not necessarily reflected here with Jess' picks as she picked many more traditional style games. That makes this list an interesting and surprising one, it didn't include all the usual suspects from recent years.

I think sometimes a game that doesn't have a story that's sad can still be a sad game to play. That's a little cryptic so I will be very simple...

Fallout 4 can be very sad when you think about what the fictional world would have been like if the bombs hadn't fallen. Just walking the wasteland and reading little snipets of peoples lives can bring a tear to your eye.

Skyrim's bleak but beautiful landscape and thinking about ancient beings that were once great but died long ago can be quite a tear bringer.

There are moments in some games that were very sad that I remember more than a game that has sadness all the way through. The Last Of Us is one of those, but I suggest playing it as I am not gonna spoil anyone's experience with that one. Another one of those types is Beyond: Two Souls. One of its endings is very sad but at the same time, so inspiring and exhilarating that its one of my favourite games of all time :-)

@openmind23: Last year's saddest gaming moment for me was at the final of main quest in FO4:

Father saying "you have to deal with destroying everything I loved" to me and entrusting Shaun synth to me.

@openmind23: I agree with you! I see what Jess is saying and maybe her focus was on tailored sadness? But what you wrote is what I felt playing Fallout 3. Sometimes I'd just stop at the top of a hill and look at the bones of a civilization. Walking among the ruins of houses that I "knew" were at one time filled with families. Then interacting with people that had fallen so far...

There were times I was sorta bummed just playing it. Had to remind myself, RPG the action not how I'd really feel being there, have fun, let's kill evil creatures and bad guys. :-)

So yes, there are different forms of sadness if one looks for it.

@tempertress: I have it as my GOTY runner up only to The Witcher 3. LIS did to the episodic adventure what Witcher 3 did to the WRPG, it raised the bar. It is the most successful game in the genre since TWD S1 and may even outsell it with the pace it is going.

Gamespot did not let us vote for it for the Reader's Choice, it definitely does well in reader polls.

Hell, on Steam, it has more owners than Tales From the Borderlands, Game of Thrones, and Minecraft Story Mode combined.

@texasgoldrush: LiS is awesome. its a shame that the reviewer, here at GS, did such a shitty job reviewing it, IMO, she was the wrong person for the job. the sad part is there are not that many reviewers worth their salt left working for GS these days

@suppaphly42: Agreed. It was a reviewer who really did not get the game she was reviewing IGN, same story.

Alexa's "Dark Room" review has to be the worst review of 2015 for Gamespot other than MGSV's perfect 10 review.

As someone who's suffered from (not really a fan of that term, but there it is) major depressive disorder for over half of their life, as well as being bipolar 2, I find it somewhat odd and maybe a little telling that Jess suggests someone who's had shitty day further indulge themselves into feeling worse. I know that's how some people deal with their emotions, but I'm not sure it's the best advice in general, even if it is somewhat natural. I find myself tending towards depressing films and music as a reflection of my mental illness and blighted, cynical worldview. I'm somewhat surprised that "This War of Mine" didn't make this list. I'm very much looking forward to picking that up when it comes out on PS4 at the end of the week.

@ManicMasochist: I was thinking about that too, and also recently when someone else was talking about playing sad games on a bad day. I'm not sure I'd want to make things worse like that, but I guess some people might somehow get relief from it, who knows.

@hystavito: I do that all the time because it personally makes me feel better. Watching/playing something where the character is put through the grinder for me puts into perspective how good I actually have it in the grand scheme, even on on a really shitty day. Depressing dramas/games really can provide a pick-me-up imo.

@hystavito: Like I said, I've spent a long time being depressed and am generally quite cynical. There was a period of time where I found myself actively looking for depressing dramas because it informs the way that I feel. It's kind of like a symbiotic relationship. I seek out depressing films and music because of the way that I feel and that just further serves to reinforce and affirm the way that I feel. When you feel like shit, watching some feel good, saccharine Disney movie is just going to make you feel bitter, if that makes sense. It is a coping mechanism, in a way.

For those who don't want to see the whole video, the games are: To the moon , Metal gear solid 3, shadow of the colossus , Walking dead seasson 1 and tale of two sons. In my opinion i would add FF7 crisis core. But nobody can beat walking dead !!!

As a parent, the ending of The Last of Us upset me so much I thought I was going to throw up. It actually changed the way I treat my kids. That whole game led to a lot of nights sitting on the deck with scotch staring into space feeling awful.

Before that, Fallout 3. I can't think of the last image of that game without getting upset.

Kinda surprised that Braid didn't make the list. The major reveal is both creepy and depressing. The most depressing game I've played personally, though, was Child of Light. So much sadness throughout the story, but the game looks and sounds so beautiful that you almost miss how sad it is. Also, on an unrelated note, like the new hair color, Jess. :)

@GameYakuza: It was such a crappy idea that destroyed the whole idea of our choice of the first game matter in the second one ... It would've been so much more interesting if Lily came back as you either let her escape or she force her escape.

"lost odyssey" is on of the most depressing games i ever played. "ori and the blind forest" ranks high. "life is strange" hits every spectrum of the feels, including utter horror and devastation at what happens at the end of episodes 2-5, 1 was just setting the stage so nothing too bad. i lost a tear during "gears of war three", when cole train is reminiscing as the group walks thru the destroyed thrash ball stadium.

oh and the most depressing game i have ever played is, "dragon age: Inquisition". not because of any of the writing or story or anything that the game did. but, because, of what it did not do.... because i had so much hope that it would be a return to greatness for bioware. it has the most repulsive cast of characters in any game i have ever played. now i don't hate all of them, but most. the fact it plays like an mmo and low and behold it was suppose to be an mmo. that is why it took one extra year to release, because the pub/dev woke the **** up and realized a DA mmo would be a catastrophe. so they spent 1 whole year putting a band aid on their abortion of a game. and then sold it for money.... that stuff you go to work for and spend most of your life making, the stuff some people seem to think they can just ask for it and you should just give it to them just because. aaaaggghhh i hate it so much.

anyway these are just my thoughts on the matter

@suppaphly42: The only depressing thing about Ori and The Blind Forest is that the devs didn't had the balls to stick to an initial decision (well advertised in their trailers) and the imagination to build upon it to create a character. The death of a parental figure in a lot of stories marks the end of innocence, the first step into maturity for characters, but in this game all that Ori learns in his journey is for nothing cuz a deus ex machina event returns everything to the initial state.

Still it was a beatiful and fluid platformer.

@suppaphly42: It did hit at the begining, when I had no ideea how it would have ended, and it would have stayed with me and make the game a more memorable experience if they did a good ending. Like in most games where I am made to feel an attachment to a character, at least I personally, expect devs to be able to deliver a good conclusion to my experience. Good ending doesn't always have to be a happy one. MGS3 is a perfect example that's given in this video, it made me care for the main cast and even if it didn't have a happy ending it was a great one.
