The fans have spoken.

Don't forget what made this franchise a success. We will not be controlled.

Let us own the games we pay for.

To the point ... I could not wait for this game to come out after it was announced.

I will not be buying it however ... I don't buy games that require me to be online, where they can watch what I am doing, or that require I be dependent on their servers being operational for me to play. Especially from a company known for shutting down servers when its no longer convenient for them to keep them running.

I'm not renting your game, I'm buying it. When AND WHERE I choose to play it should be my business.

I'm going to give this game a try, I did not like SC4 and crossed over to Cities XL which turned out to be a failure due to lack of online subcribers. This game better be free to play or I fear it will face the same fate as Cities XL online. If so, then I will just go back to Cities XL 2012.

@byrom23 Seriously, as strong as the SimCity/City Builder community is, you really think the lack of subscribers to Cities XL was unique?

I wish you were local, I would bet you the dinner of your choice this game will be an epic failure because people won't buy it because of the required constant online connection (ever tried to play it on a plane? On a train? Take it with you while you are camping?) ... and it astonishes me that Maxis completely lost sight (or just doesn't care) that this genre of game player LIVES to try, fail, and restart ... over and over and over.

This entire thing just blows me away, I cannot believe how out of touch with their community they are.

Or ... this is EA just trying to force people into their bullsh*% Origins. Yes, the same EA that has shut down servers before, rendering YOUR GAME YOU PAID FOR, useless.

@Zinderin @byrom23 You have a point there becaise I did not look at it like that. I was only concern that we would pay retail for this game and would be force to pay a monthly fee to support the servers upkeep. This is bad either way, because like you said, when they decide to unplug the server, the game I paid for would be useless.

@byrom23 If you're asking if online play will be free, the answer is yes. But this is not a game which you download for free from the internet or play it on your browser. You can buy it in physical form or in digital form via Origin.

@byrom23 It's not an F2P game, it's a full retail game which requires permanent connection to the internet to run.

Why do the cities seem to be regular shaped? Is that the maximal single-city limit sizes? I won't have the expanse of a city like or greater than that of SC4?

The 'possibilities are endless' (Wired.co.uk's marketing-shill-speak) till EA gets into the game that is.

@trencher10B All cities are the same size (about 2 square kilometers). I found this to be about 10 city blocks by 10 city blocks in the beta. Way too small for me.

There is no god mod or terraforming? where did they said that? That's the worst thing I've heard about this game. And also I really hate DLC's... I think I'am not going to play this, at least till they release a cheap complete edition.

I have no problem with permanent online experience. Thats the furure. In 5 years every single new project will be permanent online despite being SP or educational, etc. We are seing that even with proffesional programs or SDKs. And Maxis: i don't like them anymore since Wright leaving the company: if they close, I really don't mind. I do not follow the companies, but developers themselves.

I don't believe maxis has any architects working for them, at least by watching this videos and gameplays, and I remind you that Wright studied Architecture before he first come to the idea of this game, that was essencial for the success of first titles of this franchise. And for an urban simulator and urbanism or planing concepts of a city and a good understanding of all the variables and problems a city has, it's necessary to have a real good young team of architects working together with the project leaders. (YOUNG is essential)

For me the real lack here is a very big mistake I was hopping to be fixed (talking about architecture) and that is historic city centers. the 95% of the cities in the world were not settled in XXI century, This game should have the option of course for a city from the beginning, but the "normal" mode should be starting in XX century with a city inside walls over a hill (if we are in europe or Asia), or a colonial city (if we are in America), among other possibilities. Half the problems of a real city are decisions over their historic centers and their connections with the new modern plans that surround them. And this includes to decide the tracks of a street (design the street), or monument protection and other tourism-related issues (or histolical religion buildings issues). And decide whether or not to create opened or closed blocks, decide whether there may be shops on the ground floors (commercial and residential in the same area! that's basic).... I don't know... And the "american" way of building houses at the start is just in a couple of countries in the World. European little towns should be mandatory in this 5th game of the franchise.

There are improvements to the gameplay, that's true, but to the city simulation itself, this game is going to be really really poor and disappointing.

Still requires EA's Origin Trojan DRM and a permanent online connection to play it and has no offline play, no local savegames, no terraforming, these tiny city cells and forced in mendatory "social aspect multiplayer". (besides the pre-launch overpriced DLCs and other nonsense)

Keep working on that, Maxis or EA will close your studio down after 6 months when the game doesn't sell as expected. (but then again, all those annoying "features" are EAs stupid ideas to begin with)

I'll keep waiting for Cities in Motion 2 until another company steps up to develop a worthy SimCity again and in the meantime keep playing SimCity 2000, SimCity 4, Cities in Motion and Cities XL - None of them have annoying DRM and are playable offline. (and each of them has their own interesting set of features and isn't dumbed down too much)

@bloody-hell

I believe you are right ... EA is most likely the source of this required online connection ... its not enough they infiltrate your PC with their bullshit DRM trojan, now they want to track what you're doing on line by pushing notifications down to the game (and uploading data you don't control) every 3 minutes.

Not for a second am I buying into this crap that they HAVE to crunch the data online and then push it down to the PC. That is just bullshit, this game isn't sophisticated enough to require data crunched on a mainframe ... and anyone who thinks it is, just smoking and not sharing.

And all of those who are screaming "I want an online connection for multiplayer!!!" Fine, it should have been an option, not a requirement.

@bloody-hell Well said. I used to love SimCity but this title is atrocious. This is not the way to fix videogame piracy. Include loads of fun and exciting features online for people and encourage them to buy the game. No one wants to buy a game which forces you to go online. It means you never OWN a game despite having paid so much for it, because, in a few years time, when the servers are shut down, Origin is outplaced by another software and EA are broke (a possibility), you will NEVER be able to play the game. A game you've already paid for...
