God Of War PS4 Tips And Guide: 6 Essential Things To Know Before You Play

Sony Santa Monica's brand new God of War game is very different than the previous installment. Here's what you need to know before stepping into Kratos' shoes once again.

God of War's release date is here, and there's a good chance it'll launch to pretty quick commercial success--after all, it's critically acclaimed, and it's the next big first-party blockbuster on PlayStation 4. In addition, God of War marks a huge shift in the series, with a number of significant mechanics changes from previous entries.

All of these changes add up to make a game with deep and rewarding combat and exploration systems--but they might be daunting even to some God of War veterans, as well as novices to the God of War series or character-action games in general. As a result, the GameSpot team has put together a set of tips and tricks that'll help you get the most out of the game and become comfortable with the gameplay.

In the video above, we outline a number of useful tips and direct players to some less obvious parts of the game. For example, it's definitely worth exploring God of War's world when it opens up; there's a bunch of useful stuff hidden away off the beaten path. You should also take advantage of the runic system, which provides an entirely new layer of combat and customization.

In other God of War news, director Cory Barlog recently discussed the experience of working with Mad Max director George Miller. In addition, Barlog also explained why Sony Santa Monica changed God Of War's combat from previous entries in the series.

GameSpot's Peter Brown gave God of War a 9/10 in our review and called it "a spectacular action game with epic set pieces." He explained, "Like Kratos, God of War recalls the past while acknowledging the need to improve. Everything new it does is for the better, and everything it holds onto benefits as a result. Kratos is no longer a predictable brute. God of War is no longer an old-fashioned action series. With this reboot, it confidently walks a new path that will hopefully lead to more exciting adventures to come."
