Feedbackula - GTA V Review Revulsion

We reviewed Grand Theft Auto V recently, giving it a very impressive 9/10. This made a lot of our community furious, and Johnny has a thing or two to say about it.

@Hypocorism @philMcCrevis You're not supporting the review if your spamming it with meaningless insults that has nothing to do with the review itself. Its nothing more than cleaning up spam on a page. I can't tell you how many thirsty trolls would pull up "freedom of speech" to shield their idiotic acts from backlash or punishment.

The only way you're going to get rid of hateful comments on GameSpot is to remove user feedback entirely. Unfortunately, that also leads to silencing the awesome contributors to the site. Whether eliminating the former is worth that sacrifice is up to GameSpot to decide internally, but it's never going to stop otherwise.

That was cool. I think the internet is in a juvenile state where people shoot first and ask questions later. Maybe a facility where a timer is placed on a comment where a user can decide to submit or not after a certain cooling off period, as to remove the instant gratification of posting comments instantly. How many things I say and then regret an hour later is... alot!

Hosting a show where people are personally ridiculed in front of their peers (Including stupid insulting voiceovers) doesn't give you much credibility in complaining about personal attacks.

Yes personal attacks are bad and it's shocking what people post and yes the low crass level of this "show" does not condone such comments. Someone may take serious offence to being ridiculed on your show.. do you ask permission first to ensure they are OK with it?

Look at all this whining and bitching

If a single person at Gamespot read her shit review they would have known that this backlash would happen. Which they did. This was done purposefully for the traffic. Dude even admits it in whats the point.

The score makes no difference, it's her obviously feminist agenda polluting her review that is the problem.

Really starting to wonder if these guys are actually gamers at all.

Thank you johnny for another great show!
I personally think it's unfortunate that comments escalated to this point.
The internet is an amazing place, but unfortunately gives some people the opportunity to say whatever they wish to say just because they couldn't do it in the real world.

Sadly the vast majority of people who post comments on this site are morons. Just look at any PS3 and XBox story and witness the rampant stupidity of people dolling out abuse on the basis of one person preferring one massive corporations product over anothers practically identical product as proof of how dumb alot of people are.

Nicely done Jonny, its nice to see someone stand up to these morons and of course you are right in every aspect. If people just want to see the score they want then why do they even bother reading the review? They've made their minds up already! Anyone who can't see the lunacy in that alone doesn't warrant acknowledgement.

@the_lost_boy_uk i'd use more careful terms. while you intend to be positive and are reacting to negative sides of the community, you also, yourself, called fellow users morons.

While you might see calling one or more people names based on their actions as justified, you are also doing what they are doing, just to a lesser degree.

They also see what they are saying as justified they are just saying much worse and more. If you dont like a behavior then it's always better to lead by example and behave better.

come to think of it, whatever issues personal or not, the reviewer had with the game, the comments she received. i mean what the hell. johnneh didnt say **** you to everyone here, he just said **** u to those specific people.

we might takeoffense because we didnt make those comments but when u actually think about it for a minute, SOME PEOPLE did, so johnneh has a reason to react the way he did

Would someone kindly point me in the direction of any GTA characters that should be considered role models? I find picking misogyny out of a piece of work filled with stereo-types, drug deals, homicide, and outlandish story lines to be highly biased. No one gets respect for being a gender or color, you earn respect by your actions, not what you are born with. Some men are pigs, some women are weak, generalizing either sex or color by what you hear from the vocal minority makes you ignorant and presumptuous.

@Tuckpoint

I think the point is about fairness, not having role models in a violent crime simulator. The fact that the characterizations in this game are channeled through a ridiculous teen boy fantasy of sex and power, may make it unappealing or uncomfortable or maybe just BORING to both mentally mature men and women. Maybe because they believe in certain social ideals that are inclusive and equal opportunity.

I mean, I put my money down and played the game and I just find it uninteresting and worse--unfun. I got more excited about my idea of a female protagonist coming up in the desert with a sort of Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! pastiche, than the warmed over pulp the game actually gave me.

@Hypocorism @philMcCrevis No, you are allowed to say anything you want. Hate-filled or otherwise. You are NOT allowed to post anything you want on a privately owned website, the owners decide what is and is not appropriate. Speak it to the people in your vicinity and you can stretch your freedom of speech as far as you want, you do NOT have the right to force people to listen or post that shit to their private anything.

@Hypocorism @philMcCrevis I agree that people have the right to say what they like, however, verbal assaults, threats and hate speech are not exactly tolerated. As far as it goes in the united states, some of the community comments could very easily end up in a civil or even criminal suit and besides, Freedom of speech also comes with responsibilities, If one feels like expressing their feelings regardless of how biased or hateful they may be/seem, complaining when their is backlash is not allowing for freedom of expression to work both ways.

P.S. As far as the site goes...We don't own Gamespot, its parent company does. As far as policies go, we are guests and the policies enacted by our hosts reflect our behavior specifically in this current situation.

@NaNoSQDX Your going to be biased against a professional reviewer for the personal choices that person has made? One that doesn't remotely impact your own life or the review itself? Why is that?

@Quandry @Upat3am People just need to relax and quit crying about a game as if it has feelings. So it got a 9.0 the game doesn't care. And it wont take away from an individuals gameplay or experience. maybe there anger really lies in there inability to get over the fact that a transgendered person gave the review. In that case grow up.

Anonymous asked: Hey Jeff Gerstmann, how come people have problems with female representation in GTA V but at the same time speak nothing of the lengthy interactive torture scene?

Jeff responds: Because one of those arguments requires people to actually play the game.

Here's that responce i spoke about...

anonymous asked:

yo jeff your GTA5 torture scene comment is on the front page of reddit and people are taking it to mean you wouldn't be complaining about women's representation if you've played the game and you need to correct them because you're making a lot of MRA-types super happy

Jeff:

Gross. I guess those dirtbags are backed so far into a corner that they’ll latch onto anything they can get, even when it’s actually fairly ambiguous.

I’m sorry if people feel slighted by what I said. I think my main problem with the way all this has gone down is that, when I look at other mediums, I see a lot of the same sort of potentially objectionable content without the same fervor. And when people have discussions about things they don’t like about a medium like film, they talk about it more in the context of the medium, and less about any one film. Much of the recent criticism has been focused specifically on GTA, which seems a little narrow. We’re talking about a problem that exists in games as a medium. Rather than asking a specific game to be something that it isn’t, it seems like it’d be a more productive conversation to talk about games as a whole and different ways to bring the balance that people are looking for to the medium.

That said, given how far out of whack things seem right now in gaming (and tech), I can understand why people would latch onto something like GTA as a clear and extremely popular example of what they see as a very real problem right now. It’s still a very young medium with a lot of very tough growing to do, so in some ways it’s only natural that we’re starting to have these discussions more and more.

GTA IV received a perfect 10/10. GTA V world is larger has more personality more weapons more just about everything and it get a 9/10. The justification for the score being the way women are represented seems unfair when you consider that women are treated the same way in GTA IV. Also the black characters don't represent blacks well either. all black characters in the game are drug dealers gangbangers and or recently released from prison. The review did not mention this at all why is that? I it because the reviewer is female? Makes me wonder about how much that influenced the review. To be fair every character in the game is effing nuts not just the females.

Something very positive could come from all this if GameSpot are willing to undergo a painful process of examining their editorial policy and conduct. The should hold up their hands and take responsibility for running a show (Feedbackula) which encourages negativity and misrepresents the gaming community as being a stereotypical cliche of angry kids just looking for the excuse to offend. Cancel the show and give the viewing public the show they deserve filled with the real interesting observations and opinions that are posted in response to reviews, instead of cherry picking the views that sit most comfortably with editorial staffs opinions/beliefs.

If one of your editors or contributors posts a deliberately inflamatory piece filled with political dogma designed to be sensationlist have the ethical integrity to take an objective view from an independent angle instead of rushing to a knee jerk defence of improper conduct. This comes across as being petulant and self indulgent, lashing out instead of taking responsibilty behaving just like the childish commentators you accuse...Now with the clock ticking down to the point where next feedbackula would usually appear what are we going to see? An honest re-evaluation of the format?... the appearance of a new flawed article on GTA by Carolyn petite (see GS hot-topics) doesn't really promise much in the way of change...carrying on with officially sanctioned trolling of the gaming community by your in house antagonist is definitely the way to go...(double picard faceplam)

@EnochRoot69 What's ironic about this is that it's the very "shut up, woman" mentality that requires a very particular political ideology, whereas being concerned with how women are portrayed in all media--games, film, television--simply requires social awareness and empathy for your fellow human. One could be from any walk of life and believe in pretty much anything EXCEPT your misogynistic, "know-your-place, bitch" attitude and still have a problem with the lack of positive female characters in the game.
