Devil May Cry 5 Devs Discuss The Older Dante, Balancing For Fun, And Microtransactions

At Tokyo Game Show 2018 we spoke to DMC5 director Hideaki Itsuno and producer Matt Walker about the combining the old with the new in the upcoming PS4, Xbox One, and PC action game.

For Devil May Cry 5 Capcom is taking the series back to its quintessentially Japanese roots, which means there should be plenty of over-the-top action, style, and flair. However, director Hideaki Itsuno, who has worked on multiple entries in the series, is aiming to introduce new ideas that also revitalize the returning fundamentals of the Devil May Cry series.

This time around, there are multiple playable characters, and while this isn't entirely new for the series, these characters do feel and function in a way that is different from previous incarnations. At Tokyo Game Show we got hands-on time with Devil May Cry 5, and you can both read our impressions and watch gameplay. However, we also got to talk to Itsuno and producer Matt Walker about the newest entry in the series.

In the video above the pair discuss how they're making Dante a more fun, approachable character to play while maintaining the depth that fans love. A key part of this is a new weapon called the Cavaliere, which is also touched on in the interview.

It was recently revealed that Devil May Cry 5 will include in-game monetisation, where players can purchase orbs that in turn can be used to buy items and abilities. In the interview the devs explain their thinking behind including this and how it impacts the gameplay experience overall.

Devil May Cry 5 is scheduled to release on March 8, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
