@wexorian: I really liked LoL when I first started playing, but it lost its fun pretty quick. I've been contemplating picking it back up since I see it has new game modes and maps. The same map over and over just erked me in a bad way. Never tried dota. I also got mad when my katarina cat costume magically vanished. Thats probably more why I quit. I need to be a cat.
I see the appeal of it, but the amount of people that play and how much the play is boggling o_ o
Gamespot's PC game of the year 2012, Guild Wars 2, is entirely free now. or rather, the core game is, you still need to pay a one-time fee if you want the expansion coming out next month. but it's still thousands of hours worth of gameplay with very, very little restrictions, and it's probably the best MMORPG for people that don't like MMORPG tropes.
@hystavito: pretty much. you can treat it like a single player game that happens to have a lot of other players running around, and because of the systems in place, there's never any competition between players (unless you actually go to the competitive modes). other players aren't a requirement for 90% of the content, but a player is always a welcoming sight.
Funny, I just started playing SWOTR 2 weeks ago, cause I thought that I should experience Biowares stab at leveling experience. So far I quite like it being a sith inquisitor and constantly making them deliciously evil darkside choices, lightning to the face and betrayal be plenty. Although I heard that the Imperial Agent is supposed to have an even better story.
There are quite a few fun and free smartphone games as well.
Finally, do not forget about the abandonware (pc games that no longer belongs to anyone), many gems there to pick up.
Path of Exile was quite interesting, although it was fairly easy to turn your character into junk if you're not careful (I played it a long time ago, so maybe it's different now). Unfortunately, I started having less time for games, so I turned to Dota 2, which was playable in short bursts, and now Heroes of the Storm, which is even shorter and accessible.
However, credit to Dota and PoE for being extremely in-depth for games that are absolutely free, and now with easily accessible custom game modes for Dota, there really is a lot to do.
Alien Swarm is actually very, very fun, but of course it's a lot better when you have friends around to play next to you. It makes being chased down murky gloomy corridors by skittering claws of death on steroids that much more lively.
@Xentarim: I've been playing PoE off and on since open beta, and it's just as easy to turn your character into crap now as it was back then. Still a really fun game though.
@BarkingSpider81: Hah yes... Very interesting mechanics. And I did feel it followed the grim and brooding aesthetic that was Diablo's more than Diablo III did.
Dirty Bomb is a pretty solid F2P game. A fast paced FPS with lots of different characters to play as with their own special abilities. Its still in open beta currently but its more than good enough to play in its current state as a lot of updates are content related with some small bug or balance patches in the mix.
A lot of people compare it to TF2, but it only really shares some similarities. I couldn't get into TF2, but can't put down Dirty Bomb.
Hey Jess, solid work. One question though, isn't there a difference between free-to-play and a game just given away for free? Yes, YES there is, just sayin. One is free to start playing, while the other is just 100% free.
Started playing SWTOR myself (finally) about a month ago, Free-to-Play of course (to see if it's worth playing if you aren't paying). I'm up to level 25 on my 1st character and so far it seems to be worth it. Pretty good game if you can put up with the annoyances/repetitiveness of an MMO playstyle.
@Disturbed_88: I bought it when it first came out but stopped playing when they introduced a revive limit so they could sell it as a microtransaction. Having to pay to start playing again without being moved to the opposite end of the map means it's not free to play.
@pongley: "bought it when it first came out". Well, it's VERY different now (from what I understand). Maybe you should try returning to it as many of the annoyances/bugs have been removed and many additions have been made. I never paid a cent and whenever I die I am transported to a med station around 100-400m away. Once you can sprint or use a speeder, that's nothing...
@Disturbed_88: The revive restriction's still there. Just checked. Besides, I played it 3 months ago. Can't imagine it's changed leaps and bounds in that time.
