Very Violent, Very Fun

User Rating: 8.5 | Urban Chaos: Riot Response PS2
I was reluctant to buy this at its release regarding some subpar reviews and getting a cliche cops shooting baddies vibe from it. I picked it up the other day for a fair price and found a very entertaining FPS. The shooting is fun and the controls work. The enemies can do quite a number on you if you dont take cover or heal yourself although trial and error may reveal the AI as being rather predictable. You do feel a sort of urgency for the firemen or medics you have to protect from time to time although the action never strays far from kill them all, violently. That may sound simple but if your looking for some mindless killing thats very brutal, fun, entertaining and somewhat immersive, heres your ticket. There are quite a few weapons found throughout the game ranging from police issue sidearms to brutal chainsaws. You can unlock medals for getting headshots and for non-lethal kills. With the more medals you earn you can unlock prototype weaponry and upgrades for them and it really does give you a good incentive to get these medals as it is very rewarding to use an upgraded assualt rifle or new shotgun. The story is told through a news station clip that is shown before each mission, and is a novel idea that adds enough context to the action, even though becoming more predictable as you move on. The graphics do look good at times, the weapons have a fair amount of detail in them as do the environments, the graphics dont look bad but dont push the console to its limits by any means. The enemies for the most part look the same sporting hockey masks and baditudes and will even talk about yo momma. Ya. Anywho This game has a good 10 hour story although you can play it for a lot longer if you intend on unlocking even some of the 150 medals or play the bonus emergency missions. At the end of the day Urban Chaos: Riot Response is more than a by-the-numbers FPS and is underrated in my book. I had a ton of fun playing this game You'll find far worse games than this even in the FPS category. It's no game of the year but will definitly satisfy your thirst for mindless killing while keeping you occupied for quite some time.
