Possibly one of the best FPS games of all time. With it's almost non-stop fun and great game modes, Unreal is worthy.

User Rating: 8.6 | Unreal Tournament DC
Gameplay:

Your typical First Person Shooter game. (FPS) You run around in multiple arenas to kill all of your enemies (AKA, Bots) as best as possible. There is a decent variety of weapons to use. Most of them are pretty powerful and really cool too. All of them have secondary functions as well, which can be very useful. Most of the arenas are a little small, but they are big enough for good matches no doubt. Unreal Tournament contains 4 different gameplay modes. The first one is Deathmatch, which is where you try to kill the most bots before the others. For example, you have a flag limit of 15, so you have to kill any bot 15 times to win the game. The other gameplay mode, which is more action-packed then Dreathmatch, is Domination. In this mode, you and your bot team have to conquer different bases and keep them on hold for as long as possible. But watch out, because your enemy bots can steal your bases. The only other worthy gameplay mode is Capture the Flag, which is your typical catching-the-flag-and-bringing-it-back-to-your-base game. After you beat those 3 modes, you're on to the Challenge mode, which consists of one-on-one battles against certain bots. After you beat all of these modes and their stages, you're done. But the fun doesn't quite stop there. After beating those modes, you've unlocked a big load of arenas to battle in multiplayer mode. Unreal Tournament is really fun while playing on multiplayer mode for you and your friends. The game also can go online, so you can challenge online users on arenas you unlocked. Up to 8 people can play with eachother online. Online, you can also unlock even more arenas for your offline play. After you unlocked everything Unreal Tournament has to offer, you'll have up to 60 arenas! Basically, Unreal Tournament offers great FPS gameplay and certainly offers a good amount of unlockables to keep you playing.

Graphics:

The graphics are a mixed-bag here. The game features good light-sourcing and some nice details on the arenas, though the characters on the Dreamcast version are a little blocky compared to the PS2 version. Generally, this is a pretty decent looking game, but with better-looking games like Halo, Unreal Tournament's graphics are now inferior. With this game receiving a port for the Dreamcast, there are a couple ups and downs introduced, in comparison with the PS2 version. The PS2 version featured some jagged edges on the polygons, but most of them are gone in the Dreamcast version. However, since the Dreamcast is inferior to the PS2 in terms of polygon capabilities, the game has some new frame rate problems. In some cases, the game moves between 30-60 FPS (Frames Per Second), but when you get to big arenas, or when there are more then 3 bots on-screen at once, the game moves at a choppy speed. This can affect the gameplay a little, in case you're concerned. When you are playing on multiplayer modes, the frame rate slows down a little more often then the single player mode. Even though the frame rate sometimes can feel choppy, the game is playable enough to still be enjoyed.

Sound:

The music is well-fitting for each arena in this game. The musical score isn't quite memorable, but it is mildly good and acceptable. Unreal Tournament has some voice acting, but it's done by one man. But he doesn't try to sound different , he's just saying lines, and they are all repeated for almost everyone. This isn't really a bad thing though, because some of the lines are pretty entertaining. The game doesn't feature a great soundwork, but overall, a decent work.

Conclusion:

Regardless of a few minor flaws, Unreal Tournament is still an enjoyable FPS game that would appeal to any shooter fan, also since there's very few FPS's for the Dreamcast. This game isn't really popular compared to games like Halo, Perfect Dark and Quake, even though it deserves it. Unreal Tournament is very fun in both single player modes, and multiplayer mode. This game is almost a piece of a FPS treasure found in our video game history. Anyone fans of FPS games, or basically action packed games, certainly must try this gem out.

Pros:

-Great FPS gameplay
-Cool and highly addictive gameplay modes
-Good amount of replay value.
-Music, though only decent, fits well into the action.

Cons:

-Some minor problems with the game's graphics
-A few arenas could've been a little bigger.
