Very challenging and ballanced RPG

User Rating: 8.5 | Ultima: Kyoufu no Exodus NES
After playing Zelda my brother and I were looking for something else. We never played Final Fantasy Somehow we stumbled accross Ultima: Exodus. To this day I have no idea why. We had so much fun naming each of the 4 party members. I swear, I don't know if I'm going to be able to finish this review because I want to go find it.. but I'll try.
You start the story talking to the king. I was so young that I can't remember exactly what the catalyst of the story was. Anyway, you pick 4 party members from a choice of 11 classes: Fighter, Druid, Wiard, Thief, Ranger, Illusionist, Barbarian, Alchemist, Lark, Cleric, and Paladin. You also choose between races such as human, dwarf, elf, fuzzy.. ect.. I can't remember all of them right now.The combat was turn based. Which we thought was innovative and completely understandable at the time since you have more than one person to control. You could go to stores and buy weapons and armor for each character and equip them. If one of your characters died you had to take them to a healer to revive them. The Inns in the towns were used to save your game. When you go underground or into the tunnels the game switches to first person view. At that time you really need to make a map or you'll be lost. You needed to watch the waxing and waning of the moons for some reason. I can't remember right now. Maybe it was a whistle that would carry you away or something. Somehow you could earn a ship. If you ran into sea creatures you would actually fight them from the boat. This game often showed no mercy. If you wandered off too far you would eventualy run out of supplies, and the difficulty of the creatures would increase as you ventured farther. Maybe my favorite parts was the trips to the Shrines. It was SO hard to learn new spells. Your party had to travel in a boat away from the mainland to these shrines in the woods. The woods were often puzzles. It cost a lot of money to gain these skills too. Okay, I can't contain myself any longer. I've got to go find this game and start naming my characters.
