It's a great option for those who thought that Mario Kart was too juvenile.

Driving games are usually divided into two categories, city driving (Driver, GTA) or racing track driving (Grand Turismo, Ridge Racer). However, Single Trac's Twisted Metal doesn't fit into any of those two categories. It's actually more resembling of the Battle mode found in the Mario Kart games, only more violent.

The single player's plot resolves around the mysterious Calypso, host of the Twisted Metal contest, a car duel where the winner gets any prize he or she claims. This concept is brilliant, since every one of the 12 contestants have their own individual goal, and you want to play through the game with every one of the characters and see how it all turns out, even if every ending for every one of the characters are in text.

However, one person and one person only can meet Calypso to receive this prize, and since there are 12 contestants, this contest will be a gruesome one where blood will be spilt and cars will be sent to the scrap yard. To make sure that it won't be you; the game sets you up with a huge arsenal of weapons. Along with the special weapon that's different for each ride, there are also a series of mines, rockets and spikes (which are nearly useless) available for you. With these weapons you'll battle your way through six action-packed levels were the only rule is: kill or be killed! This is truly a blast, and in case the one player mode isn't enough, you can always challenge a friend in the two player mode.

Twisted Metal's graphics isn't exactly what you call "state of the art". The graphics might feel a bit pixilated, but you will hardly notice since you'll be so busy blowing stuff up and listening to a great and very catchy soundtrack.

With such a great game, it's a same to see that the control is lacking. Not because it's bad, but because it's a little confusing compared to other racing games. Instead of using the X button to accelerate, the game uses the square button, and in case you need to pause, you have to push Select instead of Start. Still, it doesn't take long to get a hold of them.

It's hard to make a great car combat game, but Single Trac have succeeded with Twisted Metal. It's not flawless, but it's a great option for those who thought Mario Kart was too juvenile.
