The game that made me fall in love with fast pace FPS

User Rating: 9 | TimeSplitters (Platinum) PS2
I remember first playing TS1 while round my friends house. We spent hours just on split screen co-op playing with and against the bots on the game mode capture the bag on Egyptian Tomb. Them moments were full of moments like 'Did you see that? I just got blown up! Wow!' Now obviously at a younger age playing this game we were easily amused but for its time it was a still a great FPS.

There isnt much of a story going on in Timeplitters. You basically just jump into a certain map, run round it killing numerous spawning enemies, eventually find a package of some sort and pick it up, return to your spawn without getting killed and in the fastest possible time. Simple, and often pretty difficult to say the least. It all could be over within a couple of hours, maybe less, but arcade mode and mapmaker was where you really got your play time out of.

The AI in the game isnt the most intelligent. They seemed to just plough towards your base guns blazing, die, and repeat the process, but when you think about it its what we all do in online games. The characters were also very fast and on small maps like Egyptian Tomb you can really feel the speed and see why its tagged 'fast paced'.

The weapons in TS1 may have been less in number and less varied but weapons like the rocket launcher still were there and just made the game more enjoyable and ridiculous.

Maps varied in theme ranging from Egyptian Tombs to Spaceports and for their time they looked amazing. The music of Timesplitters also fit certain maps perfectly and often reflected there pace.

Characters were another fun part of the game. With so many characters to choose from and to unlock. I had my favorite charater; Captain Ash. I would not play an arcade game without him. And also the semi-funny slogans and phrases each character would produce before you picked them made it first show its Timesplitters humour.

Overall this game was probably what first got me hooked as a gamer and with such an impact it had on me. The simple yet incredibly fun game, especially with friends, will be one to remember and i urge anyone looking to play a decent classic FPS to buy it or dig it out of your collection and give it another blast. It will bring back some good memories if your familiar with it. And if your new to the game or the series, mapmaker and other cool features will make this game worth your while and may impress you even today.

My favorite game of all time found its place in the fast pace madness of Timesplitters.
