User Rating: 8 | Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 PSP
This is my first Tiger Woods for the PSP. I've played TW games on the PS2 for many, many versions. So I'm very comfortable with the overall system. I've been playing Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee on the PSP for awhile now so that's my main comparison on this system.

Comments:

* The menus are very clean. Not colorful but very readable.

* I actually like the music in this version though I usually like the TW game music better than the Madden hip-hop, heavy metal stuff.

* The Game Face designer is pretty amazing for a hand-held. It's hard to believe they can actually offer all these options. You can make a fair resemblance of yourself or go waaaay in a different direction. I will say that they go a bit far with the proportions available on a woman's chest. Dolly Parton, eat your heart out! One problem I noticed is that you can't delete a user created character from an in-game menu. It appears that you need to delete your entire TW user profile in order to delete unwanted players. So be warned, your experiments will stay with you unless you're willing to delete everything and start over.

* The controls are fairly smooth. I like the 2/3 click method as opposed to the analog style but I try to use both from time to time. It's a little tricky to put spin on th ball using the analog stick. I'd prefer if they had used the arrow keys for that (like Hot Shots does).

* The graphics are impressive for a PSP sports game. The water reflections are very nice. Flags flutter in the breeze helping you with speed and direction. The rough has nice texture compared to the fairways. Different variety of trees can be seen from course to course.

* Sound effects are good. The ball hits the fairways with a nice thump. The ball striking sounds all seem correct. A fat sound when hitting out of the rough or sand trap. There's crowd noises and a few shouts which gives you a little pump when you do something well. But of course it's a little weird that you don't see these massive crowds but just hear them.

* Lots of computer golfers are included. I laughed but shouldn't when I sw John Daley. He looks HUGE in this game. Chunky version, I guess. I'm surprised (and happy) with the number of female golfers in included. Anika Soremstan and Natalie Gulbis has been around TW for a few years but now included are:

* Paula Creamer
* Christie Kerr
* Morgan Pressel
* Se Ri Pak

* I like the money and experience system that rewards you as you go along and doesn't force you to play silly little mini-games to buff up your character. It's a more natural progression. And of course it records plenty of stats and has an interesting little covers feature in which your accomplishments are recorded as Golf Digest covers. Cute.

* Commentary is not a strong point but it's passable. The hole descriptions are good and give nice tips as to how to approach the hole. The running commentary is a bit dry but I'm use to it now. Unfortunately, not as funny as the grand old Feherty days.

* Course selection is just superb. I mean 16 courses! Compare that to 6 for the first Hot Shots game. Harbour Town, Pebble Beach, TPG Sawgrass, Bay Hill, etc. It's a great selection of American target types as well as a couple of links courses.

* Load times are pretty good once in the game. I don't think the loading between holes on th scoreboard screen is any slower than it is on the console versions.

Overall, I like this game a lot so far. Much more to explore but I think it's a fine hand-held game that will make Tiger Woods golf game fans happy while traveling or kicking back in the easy chair.
