Off the Rails is a good game, but could have focussed a bit more on the strategy of building an amusement park.

User Rating: 7.5 | Thrillville: Off the Rails PSP
Thrillville is a game that's very much like roller coaster tycoon. The game sets you up as a manager of an amusement park, and you continue off the park you have to begin with meeting various goals. However, fact is that it's not too hard to meet any of these expectations. There are many mini games and they are all so much fun, but the game would be much more appreciated if there was more strategy and building involved.

There are a whole whad of characters to choose to be, when you start the game, and once you choose one there is a very large amount of customization you can do. Once you get into the actual game you will have pretty good time. There are very many rides and you get a large area to work with, but the park is hard to manage. This is mainly due to the fact that the whole game is played through the view of your character. There's no way to view your whole park, so you never really get a good idea of what it looks like. At times, in fact it may seem like you are just placing rides and games in random places. Infact it seems very much like they completely omitted the strategy portion of the game and just focussed on minigames. That being said, the minigames are pretty sweet. Pretty much every game is playable, and the game gets really cool when you ride roller coasters or other rides. You get in the view of somebody on the coaster or ride and you see what your character sees. The awesome thing is all the controls that let you look around at your surroundings, and amazingly it really makes you feel like you are on that ride.

Aside from the camera, however the graphics aren't good. People look very simple, and they are basically just an outline of the body a face and other humanly features. The clothes are not detailed at all, and it really just looks quite bland. Amazingly, event though there is not a lot of detail the edges around the characters are so very rough. The parks, however are quite detailed, although they suffer from the same edge problem. Frame rate does not hold up that well with frequent pauses, even though there are plenty of load times.

Off the Rails has an excellent soundtrack that features licensed songs from many bands, though they aren't necessarily the greatest ones. Dialogue is not heard often, because in game talking is not heard, but instead you read what the character says, but during cutscenes there are some good voices.

Thrillville Off The Rails, certainly isn't the greatest game by Lucasarts, but it is still pretty fun. There are plenty of multi player options and plenty to do in single player. And although the game doesn't have the greatest graphics, the sound is awesome, including the effects of the carnival. In the end they should have focussed more on building the park as a pose to playing minigames, but it is still good in its own right. A 7.3 out of 10.
