Telltale makes the most out of the setting and the characters

User Rating: 9 | The Wolf Among Us: Episode 5 - Cry Wolf PS3

You play as Sheriff Wolf Bigby, aka the big bad wolf. In a town where fairytale creatures struggle to survive and have issues like any other person. The difference is that they look just like us with the help of Glamours, but they still look like their fairytale self without them. Bigby gets a case early on which involves a murder case of someone in the town. Your job is to find out who it was and find them. The game takes you on several twists and turns which you don't see coming.

The way you play is familiar to you if you have played the Walking Dead. The difference between these two games though is that Telltale seperates them by having fights to be a bigger part of the narrative. You can also fight in different ways by choosing weapon among the chaos. The decisions are the same as before, but the important decisions are possible to think about and you can take a little bit of time of what you think is the best decision. The gameplay still relies on quick time events and decisions and not gameplay itself.

The narrative has a very noir tone to it that helps build the story that it is indeed a crimesolving game. Where you find different layers in the town from the bottom to the top. The characters are well fleshed out, with codex's also put in there to give the characters backstory. You are given a glimpse into the state of mind and motivation of the characters and how they live. You also get to know most of their backstories in conversations during the game, that are well written and don't seem forced. They fit into the narrative, and never feel to be forced into conversation or story. The overall story has you always questioning if what you and how you are doing things is right, even if others seem corrupt and evil.

The music helps with the tone of the game, by playing music that fits with the mood of the game and the scene you are in. The voice work is excellent, and could not have been better. The character that really stands out is the character you play. The voice of Bigby really stands out and fits well to the character and the story.

The graphic also has the regular graphics of the Telltale developer. However you can see that it sets itself apart with the alternative coloring and settings in the game that make it stand out. The game also suffers from less bugs and framerate drops other iterations from the developer have suffered.

The Wolf Among Us is worth checking out if you like a good mystery story and you like to form a story after how you want to play. With a great set of characters, hard decisions, great story and a great setting, it is worth checking out.
