A classic game revisited!

The Legend of Zelda: The game where it all started. I guess I was 10 or 11 years old when I got this game for my birthday. At that time, I was not the master of the tv, so I only played brief moments, apart from the weekend, when I could play longer. Anyway, I got used to the game by reading the instruction manual for hours and hours. I just got started to learn and understand English, so all I did was look at the pictures and the weapons and enemies you would encounter in the game.

Obviously the best part of the game was actually play it. It would become a part of my so far short life!

The Story:

Link (a Hyrulian boy) is sent out on a quest to rescue Princess Zelda. He got a message from Impa, the princess' caretaker. In the message is described that Zelda is locked away in a fortress, and is held captive by the king of evil Gannon (AKA Ganondorf).

The only way to succesfully free Zelda is for Link to retrieve the eight pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom. These pieces are scattered in different dungeons thorough The world of Hyrule. When Link manages to retrieve the Triforce of Wisdom, he can take on the last, ninth dungeon to defeat Gannon, who owns the Triforce of Power. Gannon is looking for the Triforce of Wisdom as well. He also needs the Triforce of Courage from Link, so he can transform Hyrule to his own evil and dark wishes. Furthermore, it is said that Gannon can only be vanquished by a silver arrow..

Graphics and Sounds: You can't compare the past with the present. Nowadays these visuals and sounds can be called "nostalgic" (I know persons who have the overworld theme as a ringtone like.. me, how nerdy!) but almost twenty years ago they were state-of-the-art! Some cool sound effects like shooting with your sword when you are full health, the wizzrobes throwing with their magic beams, and the screams of the dungeonbosses when you get close to them!

Gameplay: As I said, you can't compare the past with the present, but this game is still heaps of fun to play these days. Some challenging puzzles mixed with some epic boss fights. Epic you say? I'm talking about the fights with the level 3 boss Manhandla, or the three headed dragon. And of course the battle against Gannon.

But the bosses are not the only challenge you will encounter. Prepare for some of the toughest enemies you will encounter in any similar game. I name the blue wizzrobes or the darknuts. These will drive you mad, I assure you!

There are different items that can help you, like different weapons you can use besides your trusty sword, like bombs, bow and arrows and a boomerang. You also can get extra heart containers, providing you with longer life points.

Another great part of this game is when you finish it, you can start a new game with a different hyrule and different, tougher dungeons!

I can't think of any negative points. If there should be one, it could be that things can become frustratingly difficult from time to time, but weren't all NES-games like this?

Seriously, if you are THAT ignorant and haven't played this jewel yet, do so. This zelda game is only inferior to the Ocarina of Time and equally brilliant as a link to the past.

"It's dangerous to go alone. Take this!"
