Overly hyped and didn't deliver

User Rating: 3 | The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword WII
I've been playing games from the Legend of Zelda series from the first time I picked up a nes controller. Some of my favorites include A Link ot the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Mojora's Mask. After i had innitially heard of its developement I hounded Gamestop until they actually had it in their system and finally said 'Yes, now you can preorder it.'. I had been absoutely psyched for the game. I followed some of the information posted on Zelda Dungeon trying to keep myself posted with infomation about the game, screenshots, and other interesting tidbits. And yesterday, it was finally released. I woke up early, bused in the freezing rain to get to the store before anyone else and then sat there for an hour playing OoT 3D for an hour. I rushed home, popped it in my Wii and then.... I went back to Skyrim. (after about 3 hours of playing).

Now remember everyone.... This is an opinion. Not everyone will feel the same way I do about the game. So before you start freaking out remember that.

To start, this game had alot to live up to. I had already been rather disappointed in the recent DS games. The remake of OoT was a fun experience because it was one of my favourite games that was introduced into the realm of 3D and Twilight Princess, though was a beautufully and wonderful game, only took me 6 hours to beat on my first play through. Skyward Sword turned me off for different reasons:

1. The graphics: I had hoped they would continue with the Twilight Princess style, instead it looked like they crossed TP and WW. Not a good cross. I noticed this in early screenshots that had been leaked but I tried to not let it get to me hoping the game itself would make up for it. While playing it I found the graphics looked really rather.... well crappy. Not to mention the design of the characters (Just take one look at Groose) was absolutely humilliating. I'll be honest I find the graphics of the original OoT to be more beautiful.

2. Gameplay: I'm not fond of the motion control aspects in todays gaming realm but I found the ones in SS to be... amusing. It was fun to swing my fancy zelda wiimote around and watch as Link slashed enemies and grass and whatever else I swung my sword at. What I really disliked was... everything else... Trying to use the C button to look around was really glitchy was annoying. I thought the radar was just stupid... Aiming was very tedius and i swear to god it gave me an anurism. I liked that you could finally sprint instead of roll everywhere but the stamina was just something that I didn't think belonged in a zelda game....
Also give me Epona instead of a loftwing any day.

3. Story: .... I can't say much about story as a whole but I can say this much, it wasn't enough to draw me in after 3 hours of playing (and I don't usually accpet the 'It gets better later' excuse... So far I hate that the plot divice that was chosen was you're following zelda around.... You get to a new area some random messed up penguin panda tells you he might know where she is but is too flustered to tell you. Asks you to do a pointless favor for him. After doing he says "Oh yes I remember now. She left hours ago and now that you just wasted time doing that qest for me good luck finding her, oh by the way she went that way." and points in the direction Fi had told me "Oh lets look somewhere else Zelda's not in this area" ....

So yea... I played for a few hours. Coudln't stand the game. I felt really bad for psyching myself up for so long and being this disappointed. This is the first time I've ever HAD to put down a Zelda game. And it's the first zelda game I can honestly say I dislike (I even played through phantom hourglass which really pissed me off). But alas this was what the team working on the game decided to create. I may go back to playing it but I will not look at it as a 'Zelda' game.

For those of you who call it the 'Best Zelda game ever' which I have seen, remember the games that started the legend and that is was those games that made The Legend of Zelda truely amazing.
