A fun fighter, but mainly for fans.

Unsurprisingly, most game companies will simply chuck some of their best known franchises together to make a whole brand new franchise. Nintendo and Capcom have been doing this for year, but for once, SNK did something first, in the form of The King of Fighters.

The incredibly rich and powerful Rugal Bernstein has set up a fighting competition in order to test himself against the strongest combatants the world has to offer, and so, fighters from both the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting games have convened to take Rugal on.

KoF '94 plays very similarly to many other SNK fighters, which is to be expected considering the cast. From the outset, you choose from eight tag teams with three characters in each, with each team standing for a different country. Once chosen, you'll pit your team against all eight in order to face Rugal in an epic finale. You can choose from two modes which greatly affect the tag team mechanic. The first one allows for you to do the regular tag team thing, where after a death, the next member will jump in, or the other mode, where only the first character will fight, which totally negates the idea of tag-team now doesn't it? Aside from that, you fight just as you would normally, with KoF employing the similar more weighted and timing based approach found in other SNK fighting games, which forces you to learn each fighter's moves thoroughly.

As with many of SNK's other fighters, KoF is home to huge sprites, spectacular animation and atmospheric stages, which also have a great international feeling to them. The game's soundtrack isn't particularly compelling, but it is fitting, and does add a thin layer of atmosphere to the matches.

With five difficulty levels, along with a great deal of fighters to get to grips with. If you are one of those hardcore SNK fans like me, you'll get a lot more play time out of KoF '94 than your average fight fan.

Closing comments: SNK nuts are advised to pick this up as soon as possible, as they're likely to get a great deal of entertainment out of this iteration, but those who are not so excited by another SNK fighter would be well advised to wait it out for one of the better, later iterations.
