As much fun as getting a karate kick in the groin

User Rating: 4 | The Karate Kid NES
The Karate Kid, what's there to say about? It's one of the best movies of the 80s and on my list of best movies ever, the story is simple, the action was good, and is a classic hit for everyone. So with a movie this good, a game was developed for the NES to let gamers take the action of the movie into their hands. But instead it was another bad attempt to cash in on a popular franchise rather than put effort into making a decent or good game.

STORY: I really don't know the story, you just go through a few stages, beating up punks, and beating a boss, apparently this will help Danial become a martial arts master, how? I don't know. 1/10

GRAPHICS: They aren't too bad, the levels look interesting and colorful, but they seem to just have the same character sprite for Danial and the enemies. 7/10

MUSIC: I will admit the music is actually pretty good, it had a nice tune to it and was actually creative. 8/10

CONTROLS: They wouldn't be too bad if they weren't so awkward, you have to press up on the D-pad to jump and to do a special move, you have to press A and B together, but sometimes it won't happen because the controls can feel unresponsive. 3/10

GAMEPLAY: The game consists of 4 stages, but they are hard to get through. Level 1 is the easiest, you just wait for your opponent to approach you and then just kick them repeatedly until you win, no strategy involved. Level 2 through 4 are side scrollers, each being more difficult then the last. The enemies can gang up on you and just pound you to death, there is little recovery time, and the enemies can kill you before you even get a kick or punch on them. There are times throughout the game that you compete in mini games, such as catching flies, breaking ice, or avoiding swinging hammers, of course they serve no purpose but to get you a high score. In level 3 the game gets more sadistic, every known thing is out to kill you, birds, twigs, and the generic karate guys, but the one thing that will kill you the most is that there is a wind that pushes you back constantly and can get you to fall in a pit and lose a life. Level 4 though has to be the worse level in the game, there are boulders rolling down hills, the enemies take more hits, and there are enemies with spears that can kill you quickly. So if you manage to beat the game, without driving yourself insane, all you get is a well done by Mr. Miyagi and the words THE END, no feeling of accomplishment, no reward, nothing, just a big fat f**k you from the game to the player. 0/10

CONCLUSION: Karate Kid had potential to be a good game, but awkward controls, ramped up difficulty, and enemies that can kill you in a heartbeat makes this another movie based game to avoid. I suggest watching any of the Karate Kid movies, yes even that awful The Next Karate Kid movie, than play this game, and as for a better karate game, go get Kung-Fu for the NES.
