A promising MMO hindered by a frustrating lack of documentation from gameplay mechanics to crafting.

The one thing I really liked about this game was the weather. Great thunderstorms! These touches add greatly to the atmosphere, and ESO has nailed this better than any other MMO. My biggest beef with ESO is the crafting. It is mindless... everything you craft is enchant-less. In World of Warcraft, we're not even talking about greens but white (not gray) vendor trash. If you want to craft a typical green item, you have to luck into looting one. The other option is "enchanting", where runes are collected. Through trial and error you will create scrolls that can be applied to items which enhance an item. This enchanted item may or may not be green (or better). In order to craft an item with an enchantment you have to obtain and then DESTROY that green (or better) item. But there's no such thing as a global "weapon enchantment", "wrist enchantment", etc. (like World of Warcraft). If you destroy a green (or better) dagger to learn it's enchantment (called research), what you learn can ONLY be applied to a dagger. You'll be destroying a lot of gear if you want to craft anything with enchantments. From a questing point of view ESO is a mess. The threadbarren user interface sure looks pretty, not very helpful. The biggest flaw here was not creating a minimap. Instead ESO decided to go with the horrid compass. Nothing kills the immersion of a video game like having to resort to the map every hundred feet or so. You will run into countless players that look like they're reading the evening post... that's the map animation, get used to seeing it. My advice, make use of the "F" key in map mode to mark your target location, the unique compass marker will reduce your dependency on the map. Combat is different and it can be a lot of fun. If you think you can phone it in like World Of Warcraft you'll be spending a lot of time resurrecting at the old Wayshire. You will have to learn positioning, quick strikes, power strikes, blocking and stunning. Blocking and stunning are THE KEY factor in all combat. If you can't grasp MOB tells (attack animations) you will get owned. As there's no real manual to date, not being aware of the combat mechanics will lead to brutal frustration, especially for new players. I can see a lot of players dumping this game because of the total lack of documentation. Blocking, stunning and annimations aren't intuitive. There are a few quests that stand out for me. There's definitely something here, but this MMO needs a lot of work. As it is now, it's not horrible, it's not glued to the keyboard either. Hopefully in time developers will fix the bugs, make the questing / mapping less frustrating, and do something about their crafting requirements. It's an alright MMO, I still find Skyrim to be more enjoyable, especially with mod customization.
